Cincybearcat, are you referring to my suggestion to take a time out? If not, please disregard the following:

Hmm. Maybe this is a clue as to what's wrong with this train. If someone posts an idea and uses hyperbole, innuendo, metaphor and worst of all humor , someone pounces on them. My idea of "everybody take a timeout" was meant to be seen as implying "let's all step back a minute and look at where we're going and what we're doing".

Taking a time-out from AMT is exactly what I did for about a month at the end of last year. It helped me put things into perspective. I also received several kind PM's from PJ forum friends who totally got why I was taking the time-out.

Making accusations like "The one size fits all, government runs your life solution?" doesn't move anyone forward and telling someone, "either take it up as Byrnzie did with this thread or just leave" just seems flat out arrogant and rude and again gets us nowhere.

Maybe I just didn't understand you post, Cincy. Please explain. Thanks.

Yes I was. Most of my point was a joke, just like the "Screw this, I'm not taking a time out" post I responded to. It was sarcasm about the government and the disagreements that occur here.

My last sentence, I do think people should either type out their concerns or take their own time out, not a group time out. The leave just meant leave the threads you are having a problem with and don't want to discuss anymore.

I shoulda used a winky though, I usually do.
THATS the problem. Not enough use of these all important smilies!!!!

seriously, it might lessen some of the tension.

    Yep.

Although I've been told by some here that putting a smiley after what I say is a chicken shit move and I wasn't really just trying to be funny/sarcastic and I really meant what I said, etc....so really, you can't win.

The only sure things in life....

    1) You can't please all of the people all of the time

    3) People will call me racist for that last comment
    4) I debated for 30 seconds whether or not to add a smiley to the Obama comment
    5) Prince will post about Gays, porn, or both
    6) Polaris hates America
    7) ;) Please attach smiley to #6
    8) If the you could marry the environment, you wouldn't have a chance unless the environment was a mormon because Polaris is already married.

It's an online political forum. What else should any one expect?

True, although you can also run yourself into the ground by taking shit too seriously, which, believe it or not, I don't. I get all the political stuff out of my system on here, which is kind of therapeutic in a way, and can also be educational - having to source info/do your homework, e.t.c.

I wouldn't describe myself as a serious person - the opposite is probably closer to the truth. Passionate maybe. Anyway, this isn't about me. Onwards...

I would hate to be a non-white PJ fan, for instance, who wandered into a thread where people were making overtly racist comments & no one was standing up to disagree.

I can completely identify with this... I joined this forum almost 7 years ago.

In those seven years I've read here some really disgusting things. Posts asking to bomb all Muslims, calling gays sick people, one particular case of a male member threating to track and use physical violence against another female forum member…

In posts that hit closer to home, I remember some posts asking to invade and/or bomb Mexico to control illegal immigrants, others asking to shot to kill illegal immigrants who cross the border, others calling everything related to Mexico a cesspool, others saying Spanish is a ghetto language, others calling Hispanics (not illegal immigrants, but Hispanics in general) criminals, and many, many others…

I was extremely disappointed seeing what kind of people PJ can in some cases attract. Now I know I was extremely naïve in thinking all Pearl Jam fans would, at least somehow, identify with the beautiful message of the band. The shock was huge, nevertheless.

But what keeps me coming back, at least to the other forum sections or as a lurker in AMT, is that many others forum members did stand in those cases to disagree. It, at least, gave me a little hope in this community.
I can honestly say that, without those people, I would have let my ten club membership lapse a long time ago...

Well I'm really glad you stuck it out & saw through that shit to realize that it doesn't represent most of us here. And I hope we as a community can be successful in being clear that racism is not ever acceptable. And I also hope you'll continue to share your perspective here on AMT. Thank you.

I honestly believe that anyone who genuinely thinks I hate America based on my posts on this message board over the past six years must have their head up their ass.

Even If I entertain this notion for a minute I still find it impossible to understand how anyone can hate an entire country. Maybe I'm just a bit thick, but how does someone hate the Rocky mountains, the Redwoods, the Grand Canyon, the whole of American literature, art, and music? How does someone hate every American movie, documentary, actor and actress? And how does someone hate every American poet, and political commentator?

If I hated America then why would I post messages on a forum for an American rock band?

The more I think about it, the more absurd it becomes. It becomes even more ridiculous when you take into account how In six years of posting on this message board I've arguably been the most vocal fan of people like Noam Chomsky, Norman Finkelstein, Bill Hicks, Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, Ginsberg, Hunter S. Thompson, Henry Miller, e.t.c, e.t.c.

If I really hated America then I'd have to burn half my record and book collection.

In some people's narrow minds, does criticizing everything that's wrong with a country mean that you therefore hate everything that's right with it too?
Or is it just that anyone who's critical of the corruption of the U.S government and U.S foreign policy, must therefore hate 'America'?

I think that is the definition of patriotism.
