The real deal is that not everyone is dumb, but when someone doesn't agree with your views, you think they are dumb. Issac had a lot of views that a majority of Americans didn't agree or share. Thus, he believes the majority is ignorant.

not representative of pearl jam but representative of the world...

... someone on another forum said he didnt listen to ACDC cause bogans do.... insinuating that everyone who listened to ACDC is a bogan.. we all know thats far from the truth but it didnt stop that poster drawing generalisations. this is just how the world is steve.. full of light and dark, ignorant and enlightened(whatever the hell that means) should we as people be better than this? maybe/maybe not? not we be better than this cause we all have a common interest in pearl jam? again maybe /maybe not. not everyone who was a fan of RATM was as vehement as the members of that band when it came to human rights and respect etc,.. some fans just liked the music(believe it or not)... so what makes you think fans of pearl jam should be?

    I wonder who?
Nice one, go talk about me over the messageboard.
Where else have you posted about me?
I don't listen to them because they suck, the type of fans they attract just make them annoying but that is not why I don't like them, get it right please.
And I never labelled all AC/DC fans bogans, gee putting words in my mouth now?
What you want me to like bogans? Hang with them? People that have no interest in being positive contributors to society, instead hang near train stations getting drunk and abusive.

yep youre right you didnt say everyone that listens to ac/dc are bogans. i guess i just took offense for no reason to the following words:

...4. Bogans in Australia listen to them, they are the band for the uncultured feral bogans, I hate those types of people and this band attracts a massive bogan following (if you don't know what a bogan is then I can explain to you)

ya ... i don't normally respond ... in the thread i'm talking about i was actually trying to get someone else not to fall for the bait ... but the thing is - it's that ignorant troll ... someone who says something inflammatory and actually believes it to be true ... someone always bites and then the thread gets locked ... and what is funny is that the troll who baited is the guy who reported the thread that got it locked ...

The problem is when people try to make a point of saying we should get along they usually manage to still degrade those that don't agree with them...

I'm very conservative when it comes to economic and foreign affairs (BTW that doesn't mean I am a neocon), a bit Libertarian on social issues, and pretty liberal with letting others speak their mind, it just really makes a discussion much better when insults are left out.

I stand by my words. Stating that some individuals here can be quite intolerant is hardly degrading anybody. If it makes you feel any better, I find that this intolerance runs both ways. There are many liberal members who frequent the train that are just as condescending. I apologize for not making that clear in my earlier post. As for getting along, I think that many of the people here are too partisan (both sides) to really be cordial.

As for my earlier post, I can say with certainty that it isn't directed towards you. I find your posts to be fair-minded, and even if I don't agree with your position I haven't seen you rip into somebody for holding a point of view that you don't agree with.

I ignore stupidy like that. What do people hope to achieve by engaging someone with views like that?

Seriously, I've not seen a single person on this forum more steadfastly locked into their belief stucture than that person. You know exactly how he's going to feel on most issues. Yet somehow people keep acting like they're shocked or surprised when he says something that both liberals and conservatives think is batshit crazy. He doesn't care if you think his views are immoral, bigoted, hateful, or fascist. He doesn't even care when plain and irrefutable facts are placed before him. He just doesn't care. His world is how he views it. If the man thought the sky was green then he'd argue that to the day he died.

What is the point of turning every thread he is involved with into a giant conversation of "How crazy his views are" and trying to argue against him. Hardly anyone agrees with him so its not even like you're trying to make sure he doesn't influence others because most others think he's a nutjob. I just think debating or conversing with him in almost any way is about as useful, enjoyable, and productive as going to the nearest brick wall and slamming your head against it.

Self-examination can be a good thing. I hope this discussion continues in a civilized way and produces a good result with that in mind....the meeting of the minds.

I wish each and every one of you could be seated in one room so you could see each other and then discuss what's on your minds. It would be good to think of A Moving Train as that room in reality. The computer or device you post from is only a means of delivering the communication of thoughts that mean something to you. There's a living, breathing human being behind each posted message.

I'm pretty sure about that last thing. As far as the OP goes...this place is nothing if not opinions. That's my opinion.

Take good care of each other please...and have a lovely evening, day, morning, whichever applies to your time zone. My very best to you all.

meanwhile in parallel universe, critical thinking and logic were so abundant that people longed for the day when someone uttered incantations of the idiot.

    :D This may be true.

But then there's idiot's, and there's idiots. People like the court jester - or the trickster hero of Indian native religions - who's job was to act the fool and stir things up/play with reality.

Then there's just plain idiots, with little or no imagination at all, who just irritate the fuck out of everyone with their lame bullshit.

    There is a difference.

Except it really isn't as simple as that.

Whatever happened to referring to the facts? Why is it frowned upon when people back their comments up with the factual record, as opposed to just spouting 'views', and 'opinions'?

I may be considered part of the "peanut gallery" because I dont post often, and when I do, my posts tend to be short because I'm a very slow typer, terrible speller and by the time I'm finished reading a thread.....well I feel like I've already spent too much time on here. Besides, most of the time someone else has already said what I have felt, only more eloquently.

But.....as a long time lurker and reader, I find there is still reasoned debate on here. I feel like I learn a lot from others with different opinions than mine. I would like to call out a few regular posters on AMT who have posted on this particular thread....mikepegg44, Jason P, cincybearcat and unsung who I dont agree with about some things but I find they add to reasoned debate here on AMT. There are others, but I cant remember them. Without them this place would be one giant circlejerk.

There are others on AMT (we all know who they are...those who cannot be named) who I dont agree with but I choose to mostly ignore. They are....as the internet has termed them.....Trolls. They bait. They get threads locked. As sad as it is, that is apparently what they come here for.

Ummmmm.....thats all I wanted to say. This place isnt all that bad. Shit, I've spent to much time on here already.

At the risk of sounding pompous and/or sanctimonious, what the fuck is going on here lately? The Train has sunk to it's lowest point in the past five years, in my opinion.

Racists, trolls, self-proclaimed friends of 'God' himself, bigots....

I created a thread on a recent article of Chomsky's discussing racism in the present day, and the thread descended into a racist tirade against Africans, and personal attacks on other posters. The thread was then locked.

I've had a few pm's over the past 24 hours praising my comments in a thread saying how this place has become filled with bullshit.

Is this place really representative of Pearl Jam anymore? I could be wrong, but doesn't this band represent intelligence, imagination, conscientious activism, (I hesitate to say 'left-wing' because that term doesn't really mean anything to me) - feel free to add your own adjectives.....

There have always been people of all different persuasions - political or otherwise - on here locking horns, and generally stating their points of view, but lately this place seems to have been overrun by some pretty shitty characters. What the fuck is going on? Is this indicative of the U.S in general?

I just don't get it. How does this band attract racists, or bigots? Do people not listen to their lyrics, or listen to Ed speak between songs, or pay any attention to their activism outside of the band? What would cause someone who says 'I love the death penalty' to follow this band? It would be like me deciding to become a fan of Ted Nugent, or Mick Hucknall. I would need a fucking lobotomy first.

And, yeah, I know I'm not perfect. I know I really shouldn't post pictures of mutant Ninja turtle armchair warriors, and Yoda. But really, I used to come here knowing that on any given day I could find an engaging topic, discussion, debate, news item, e.t.c. But now it's just gotten to resemble a school playground with shit-slinging and ignorance being the norm.

    Answers on a postcard please...

"A meeting of the minds" ... this would be awesome! Well put Kat.

Let's try this and kindness. Acceptance of each other, forgiveness and respect.

I look forward to that :D

I think though we should refrain from calling others idiots, among other insults,
cause that doesn't lend well for good communication.
