And the fact that I don't tolerate bullshit doesn't mean that I'm unhappy or filled with hate, as anyone who's ever met me will tell you. It just means that I don't tolerate bullshit and bullshitters, of whom there are plenty on this part of the message board. If people don't like being called out on what they post then they can simply stop posting bullshit. Life's too short for ignorance, racism, bigotry and homophobia, and I'll call people out on it everytime. And I don't care if you don't like it.

I wholeheartedly agree.
Some bullshit is subjective/opinions. And it seems that people treat those issues with the same amount of respect as they treat the overtly racist, bigoted, homophobic issues.

No shit. Why kinda of a solution is that? The one size fits all, government runs your life solution? Jeez, if you have a problem with the board, either take it up as Byrnzie did with this thread or just leave.
Cincybearcat, are you referring to my suggestion to take a time out? If not, please disregard the following:
Hmm. Maybe this is a clue as to what's wrong with this train. If someone posts an idea and uses hyperbole, innuendo, metaphor and worst of all humor , someone pounces on them. My idea of "everybody take a timeout" was meant to be seen as implying "let's all step back a minute and look at where we're going and what we're doing".
Taking a time-out from AMT is exactly what I did for about a month at the end of last year. It helped me put things into perspective. I also received several kind PM's from PJ forum friends who totally got why I was taking the time-out.
Making accusations like "The one size fits all, government runs your life solution?" doesn't move anyone forward and telling someone, "either take it up as Byrnzie did with this thread or just leave" just seems flat out arrogant and rude and again gets us nowhere.
Maybe I just didn't understand you post, Cincy. Please explain. Thanks.

I don't think we're defining bullshit in the same way. Byrnzie gave a definition of bullshit early in this thread, which is what I think he's saying he generally has a problem with, which is what I'm agreeing about. Bullshit, by definition, is not generally subjective/opinion; it's people making factual statements without regard for truth. That's how I define it, anyway.
Now, I threw in the word generally because I think there's a question as to where/whether the overtly racist, bigoted, homophobic, etc stuff fits in. In general I think it's bullshit because I don't think it's true that the people spewing it really believe it; I think they're just trolling. If they truly believe it, I guess then it's subjective/opinion & doesn't fall under the category of bullshit. But then it's a whole separate category that shouldn't be tolerated - in society or message boards or anywhere. Even though it's subjective, its extreme & harmful nature precludes any claims to legitimacy that most opinions have.

I think in life/society we have an obligation to not turn our heads & thereby complicitly support blatant injustice in the world.

Yeah, in life/society we do. But we're talking about AMT here. And why it's become such a toxic place lately. Ignore the trolls and they go away. Case in point.
Funny... I just happened to read a quote after I left this thread where Mike was asked what the secret to Pearl Jam's longevity is and replied that it's because they confront issues head on & call people out on there shit. Seemed relevant.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying & I think that can work sometimes. But I also think it's totally appropriate to consistently take a stand against bullshit & injustice. This may just be the Internet, but it's still real life with real people saying things & reading what's being said. I would hate to be a non-white PJ fan, for instance, who wandered into a thread where people were making overtly racist comments & no one was standing up to disagree.
Also, when it comes to bullshit, I've found that many people reading it really believe it unless someone stands up to correct it. And that's how all kinds of misinformation gets propagated, even among reasonable people.

I understand your point and don't disagree, but in doing what you're talking about doesn't rid the toxic environment the Train has become. It just makes it even more toxic. If we all know specific trolls are purposely spewing bullshit and hatred, the last thing we should do collectively is feed them. Ignore and they go away. Why contribute to the illness?

It all comes down to ego. Egos breed narrow-mindedness, pettyness, conceit, arrogance, etc.
if we all abandon our egos and choose a path of intelligent, civil discourse, then that is a start to a better AMT/ society, civilization
I would hate to be a non-white PJ fan, for instance, who wandered into a thread where people were making overtly racist comments & no one was standing up to disagree.
I can completely identify with this... I joined this forum almost 7 years ago.
In those seven years I've read here some really disgusting things. Posts asking to bomb all Muslims, calling gays sick people, one particular case of a male member threating to track and use physical violence against another female forum member…
In posts that hit closer to home, I remember some posts asking to invade and/or bomb Mexico to control illegal immigrants, others asking to shot to kill illegal immigrants who cross the border, others calling everything related to Mexico a cesspool, others saying Spanish is a ghetto language, others calling Hispanics (not illegal immigrants, but Hispanics in general) criminals, and many, many others…
I was extremely disappointed seeing what kind of people PJ can in some cases attract. Now I know I was extremely naïve in thinking all Pearl Jam fans would, at least somehow, identify with the beautiful message of the band. The shock was huge, nevertheless.
But what keeps me coming back, at least to the other forum sections or as a lurker in AMT, is that many others forum members did stand in those cases to disagree. It, at least, gave me a little hope in this community.
I can honestly say that, without those people, I would have let my ten club membership lapse a long time ago...

Sorry to hear about your experiences on the AMT. I freely admit that I rant against religion on this board, but I tend to focus on the injustices that religion--especially in the political arena-- is at times behind. In no way do I want to insult those who use religion in their daily lives, but I sometimes do, and my insults are sometimes misguided.
Concerning what you have experienced, I have no explanation for it other than the fact that people are egotistical and narrow-minded. It is simply a flaw in human nature. And, with the world we live in today--a world of antagonism, pettyness, intolerance of others--I don't see things getting better.

Yes I was. Most of my point was a joke, just like the "Screw this, I'm not taking a time out" post I responded to. It was sarcasm about the government and the disagreements that occur here.
My last sentence, I do think people should either type out their concerns or take their own time out, not a group time out. The leave just meant leave the threads you are having a problem with and don't want to discuss anymore.

For #6, I think you have Polaris confused with Byrnzie.
I think in life/society we have an obligation to not turn our heads & thereby complicitly support blatant injustice in the world.
True, although you can also run yourself into the ground by taking shit too seriously, which, believe it or not, I don't. I get all the political stuff out of my system on here, which is kind of therapeutic in a way, and can also be educational - having to source info/do your homework, e.t.c.
I wouldn't describe myself as a serious person - the opposite is probably closer to the truth. Passionate maybe. Anyway, this isn't about me. Onwards...

I shoulda used a winky though, I usually do.
seriously, it might lessen some of the tension.

Yep.
Although I've been told by some here that putting a smiley after what I say is a chicken shit move and I wasn't really just trying to be funny/sarcastic and I really meant what I said, etc....so really, you can't win.
The only sure things in life....
1) You can't please all of the people all of the time
2) Obama hates people that have been successful
3) People will call me racist for that last comment
4) I debated for 30 seconds whether or not to add a smiley to the Obama comment
5) Prince will post about Gays, porn, or both
6) Polaris hates America
7) Please attach smiley to #6
8) If the you could marry the environment, you wouldn't have a chance unless the environment was a mormon because Polaris is already married.
9) I just derailed this thread about derailing.

For #6, I think you have Polaris confused with Byrnzie.
Hahaha... just a little jab at my friend polaris based upon some of his recent comments to me about my responses to him.

Onwards...
Choo choo!
Well I'm really glad you stuck it out & saw through that shit to realize that it doesn't represent most of us here. And I hope we as a community can be successful in being clear that racism is not ever acceptable. And I also hope you'll continue to share your perspective here on AMT. Thank you.
