Waiting on a friend was awesome. I was there early with my ear pressed against a crack in a door listening to the sound check when they played it and nearly pissed my pants (they did a loooong sound check). Man of the Hour was cool, too. Rober Pollard was ok, doing a lot of drinking during his set and at one point mentioned needing a cigarette - Ed comes running out and gives him one to which Robert says "Thank you" before realizing it was Ed... THAT was funny.
The crowd was amazing, the band was on fire and even though I don't live in Pittsburgh I found myself shouting "the chant" in defense of the city when Ed dissed it. I consider myself the manliest of men, but I actually had a tear in my eye at the end of Black - and it's not particularly my favorite song. The crowd was singing along, the tag was beautiful and the moment was just incredible.
A magical night. Thank you Pittsburgh. Thank you Pearl Jam!
unfortuantely, I found last nights show to be quite lacking... I dunno, I just wasnt that into it... Not to say I didnt like it. Don't get me wrong, but this was, in my opinion the worst of the 10 shows Ive seen this year. Even overshadowed by Toronto 1 on this tour...
Good show, nice to see Smile, and Waiting on a Friend... But I was really hoping to see some rarities. I guess when you see them 10times a year you get spoiled. The energy was great, for a small arena it rocked pretty fierce... Wouldve been much louder if it had sold out.

how is it elitist? I said I enjoyed it... Can a person not want to hear some rarities? I had a good time, the show was good.... A good PJ show is better than most of my other fave bands great shows.

You rated it as the worst show you've seen this year because they didn't play enough rarities? Maybe you are spoiled as you mentioned, but that seems like a very shallow reason to diss a concert to me. In the end you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine.
I didnt "diss" the show. I just said it was lacking compared to the others... It was still a great show, but no 2 shows are equal, and Im my opinion this one was the worst of them so far.... perhaps using the word "worst" is harsh... cuz it was still great, but it was my least fave of the ones this year is all.
How was waiting on a friend? Anyone? Sounds like the Pittsburgh crowd was awesome unlike Ben Rothlesberger performance in the superbowl.(sorry I just had to get a shot in). Pittsburgh is a great city though I wouldnt put them in the Boston/Philly/NYC category just yet but they seem like they might be on my "the next, must go place to see a pearl jam show" list. Nice going Pitt.
Waiting on a Friend was really cool. Seems like every show this tour has had some really differernt/unique song that made it special. The played this one plugged in, but seated. Ed needed a lyric sheet. He was frantically motioning to the techs before they started the song. Most of us "older" fans were singing along, but the kids didn't know the words. Never expected to hear this, but it was a really nice surprise.

if you weigh philly venues to pittsburgh venues (rock that is) pittsburgh dwarfs philly.. eventhough in the past 2 years we did lose a couple venues.
we may not have many venues but we're consistently on top with the music scene, especially the local music scene (we've been #1 on a few lists). Just wait until we get a new arena. game over philly.

I really got into Pearl Jam at the beginning of '05, and caught them when they opened for the Rolling Stones in Pittsburgh last September. Though they put up one hell of a show, as the opening band they only played 14 songs. Since then I've been waiting to see Eddie and the boys play a full show.
Last night I did, and it was everything I could of asked for and more.
I live about 40 minutes outside of Pittsburgh, so we left my place around 4. I drove, my friend whose seen them 8 times (9 after tonight, he's on his way to Cincinatti now, I believe he is known around here as RedMosquito91), my friend who saw them with the Stones, but never in a full show, and my friend who loves the band, but was a Pearl Jam concert virgin.
After parking and stuff we got to Mellon Arena around 5:15. We chilled at the entrance, ears pressed against the glass doors listening to soundcheck. We faintly heard the band run through Man of the Hour and Marker in the Sand.
Finally, around 6:30, the doors opened. After a pat-down, we went over to the merch stand and picked up a poster for the show. They are real bad-ass, its all red with a black typewriter typing the lyrics to "Comatose." I'm so glad we were able to get them.
After picking up the posters we got some hot-dogs and headed to our seats. We got them on Ticketmaster, but right when they went on sale. We were in one of the first rows of Section C8, which is on Stone's side. There we waited, and waited, and waited. Finally the lights went out, and Ed did a nice solo preset of Throw Your Arms Around Me. It was a great way to kick off the night.
Ed then introduced Robert Pollard. I never listened to Pollard before, and though I thought his backup band was great, his vocals didn't do it for me. He was clearly wasted. During his set we watched the arena fill up, and by the time they were done, the whole place was packed, except for the seats behind the stage.
Finally the lights went out again, and Pearl Jam came out. Our friend who's going to Cinci didn't sit with us, but me and my two buds were started guessing the opener. I threw out Severed Hand, and the other two said Life Wasted and Release. Ironically, these were the first three songs of the show, all which were incredible. Release wsa a solid opener, and Life Wasted and Severed Hand really got the place rockin'. It was sweet to see all the fans getting into the new tunes like they did. They followed up Severed Hand with a stellar Corduroy and Do The Evolution.
The band took a little breather after DTE and Ed conversed. He talked about Mellon Arena, Pittsburgh, then went into Dissident, one of my favorites from the night. After Dissident was Even Flow, which was decent. It didn't beat Even Flow from Stones opener though, McCready ripped that one apart behind his head. After that came Marker in the Sand, my favorite from the new album, so I was stoked to hear it.
Ed then talked a little more, about the energy of the crowd and how they feed off of it. Then came a flawless In Hiding, crowd-fueled Better Man, and Daugher w/ Ben Harper's "With My Own two Hands" tagged on at the end. Then came Garden, which I didn't recognize and first with it's different intro, but it was incredible nevertheless.
Then came probably my favorite part of the show, I Got Shit/State of Love and Trust. The band shredded these two tunes, and everyone went nuts. It was incredible. They closed up the regular set with Inside Job, World Wide Suicide (which Ed said was inspired by Republicans), and a jaw-dropping Porch.
After a short encore break, Ed came out and sang Wasted Reprise with Boom. The whole band then came out and did a sitting Man of the Hour, which was simply beautiful. Ed then talked about Pittsburgh, and how its not their favorite place, but one of their favorite places to play. People threw joints at lighters at Ed, it was great crowd/band interaction. You really had to be there to appriciate it. Ed then talked about the Stones opener, and covered their song "Waiting on a Friend." Its a real good little tune, it reminded me of when Ed came out with the Stones to sing "Wild Horses." They then played a Small Town, Black with a "We Belong Together" tag, and a roaring Alive. The lights were on the crowd during the end of Alive, and watching everyone through their fists in the air and scream "Hey" was unbelievable. Everyone was so into it, I can't really describe it. Ed climbed on the amp and sang "Look at all of us, we are all still alive." It was a sight to be seen.
The band came out for the second encore, and Ed said this is going to be like seeing a brick wall and hitting the gas. They then ripped through Go, Why Go, and Comatose. It was the greatest 10 minute rock-block of my life. Then came a nice surprise, Smile, and then Rockin' in the Free World (which the entire arena went nuts during). They closed it up with Yellow Ledbetter, with McCready adding the National Anthem during his guitar solo.
This concert was easily one of the best I've seen. The band and the crowd fed off of each other and created an unreal magic. Dissident, I Got Shit/State of Love and Trust, Alive, and Rockin' in the Free World were my favorites of the night, but the entire show was unforgettable. Can't wait to see these guys again.
P.S. Holy shit this is a long post, sorry about that.

I was there last night, this was my 8th pj concert since 1998. I am a spoiled woman. I have now heard I Got Shit twice recently (DC too!). The crowd had many oldsters there like me, past 35. (Let's get a new hairstyle guys -- the mullet is overwith, ok?) Even the girl who received the wine bottle from ed had one!
We had nosebleed seats, D27, side view, which is ok, ed turns to his right often.
This was my first time being on mike's side, but a cord was in the way blocking my view of him when he stood near the edge of the stage. I had to use the restroom, so I walked down the back ramp to level C....no security. I got a closer look. During the final encore, I took my husband down and we had 2 great seats. Ed came over and brought a tambourine to the back edge of the stage and pointed at a guy in our section. I think that's the closest I've ever been to Ed, like 60 feet away. (my fan club no. isn't very good so i usually end up way in the back on the floor or on stone's side up high -- these nosebleed seats were TM.)
The setlist was a great mix of old and new. But I did not hear immortality. boo hoo! It seemed like the crowd around me was unfamiliar with severed hand or marker in the sand, or they could be lyrically challenged like me. I still don't know all the words to pj songs, even the old ones...but I'm very familiar and can still dance to them.
Oh and Throw Your Arms Around me was perfect. The acoustics at Mellon were better than at DC. I had never heard of Robert Pollard but he was pretty good. He liked to talk about the sixties!
I was so glad we moved closer for the encore. Rockin' in the Free world was so much fun, the audience was on fire, the lights were on, everyone was participating. I have been to many concerts and I have never seen a front man connect with an audience (or be so thankful!) like Ed.
oh yeah, they played Inside Job Loved it! Loved it! Loved that concert....And I got to see ed playing wasted reprise the first time I went down and found the closer, empty seat.

Ok, now that I've gotten some sleep, time for a proper review.
Glad to have Pittsburgh be the show to put me into double digits finally. #10! 5 of those being in the 'Burgh. Glad to see TYAAM make an appearance, hadn't heard that live since my first show back in '98. Sounded as good as it did then. As for the main set, I couldn't believe the energy they were pouring out, about halfway through, I told my wife "Christ, they better slow down" but they just kept going.
Loved Corduroy showing up again, really gets the crowd going, and very surprised to see DTE show up that early as well. Dissident and In Hiding were great. Loved the reworked Garden, first time hearing that live too. You can never go wrong with I Got Shit, always a fave! Incredible version of Inside Job, really tight. WWS, great placement, sounds better later in the set, and as always...an amazing Porch.
Slowed it down a bit with the First Encore....MOTH was nice to hear, and I figured they would toss out a tip of the hat towards the Stones show, great selection to cover....great Black, Ed really pouring it out at the end, with a hug on Stone at the end.
Encore 2, back to kicking us in the balls....Go, Why Go, Comatose.....WHEW! Got Smile in Cleveland too, but this one was better. An amazing RITFW, with YL. Star Spangled Banner at the end ended the night perfectly.
I never think the next Pittsburgh show is going to beat the previous, but I'm glad I'm proven wrong every time!

Dude, stop going to shows, you piss opeople off with that set-list complaint crap...You just don't get it ......
oh yeah, that was show # 7 for me and it is by far #1. state college doesn't have shit on that show. probably one of the best versions of porch i've ever heard last night. and as always mikey was on fire!
I just got home, and I'm kinda surprised that more people aren't talking about PORCH!!! Fuckin amazing, the best I've ever seen, one of the best I've ever heard (and I've heard just about all of them).
This was my 3rd and last show of this tour, and by far the best. I think the setlists in Cleveland and Detroit were a little more to my liking, but the energy last night was beyond belief! Best crowd I've ever been a part of, the only one that compares is Buffalo '03. And I don't think I've ever seen the band look happier

Did anyone else see the infant in the 3rd or 4th row on Mike's side. She was with her Mom and Dad and she had hearing protection on, but damn, that seems a little too young to be taken into a show. Maybe they thought it was cute though.

Wasn't it the "we Belong Together" tag. I noticed him wiping his face afterwards too, kind of an emotional ending to the song.

Wow. This was my ninth show and probably the best. Great set. Finally got to hear Garden live. The crowd was very vocal but didn't seem to move all that much. Maybe it's just me. Oh, and I believe I started the first "Here we go Steelers" chant after Ed said Pittsburgh wasn't on of their favorite cities. It had to be done. Great show. I can't believe I still have my voice!
I buy all the boots, but this one not up yet, what did Ed mean by that? Pitts not one of their fav cities? More Seattleites STILL WHINING About SB XL??

It was a subtle jab in fun, but I don't think most of the people got it. He was smiling the whole time, trying to get a rise out of the crowd, but never really got what he wanted I think.

He said to be honest, Pittsburgh wasn't their favorite place. Then he got booed and told us it was ok to throw things, at which point people started throwing joints and cigarettes, then he asked them to throw lighters After that, he said something like "But what I was gonna say is it's always been one of our favorite places to PLAY."

8/08 - Ed solo in DC, 6/09 Ed in B'more,
10/10 - Brad in B'more
Glad to have Pittsburgh be the show to put me into double digits finally.

Oh yeah, that is just MHO too.

Wasn't it the "we Belong Together" tag. I noticed him wiping his face afterwards too, kind of an emotional ending to the song.

It was a subtle jab in fun, but I don't think most of the people got it. He was smiling the whole time, trying to get a rise out of the crowd, but never really got what he wanted I think.

That guy was me! Absolutely amazing experience. This was my 11th show and I would have never imagined Ed coming over and singling me out to give a tamborine too. I'm still stunned a day later!
yeah.. she was right infront of me...being so close to the speakers, and eventho she had ear protection.. thats boarderline child abuse...
