It's all relative to the industry. The fact that this album is still in the Top 20 4 weeks into release is impressive. It is poised to have a long chart run, even if the overall sales are not very strong compared to previous releases.
Even Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus couldn't crack 300k sales in the first week, so the fact that PJ sold 166k in week 1 gives you an idea where they stand on the industry landscape. With all the hype around Arcade Fire, their album did not equal PJ's first week sales and it's tumbling faster than Lightning Bolt.
As rock acts go, PJ is at or near the top of popularity and that is pretty phenomenal for a band who has released 10 albums in 23 years of existence.
"Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"
Any idea about the overall cumulated sales figure?
Per Billboard articles and Hits Dailydouble:
Week 1 - 166k - #1 on Billboard 200
Week 2 - 46k - #2 on Billboard 200
Week 3 - 27k - #11 on Billboard 200
Week 4 - 16k - #18 per Hits DD (Billboard not released yet)
Total Sales = 255k
It's as well as they've done chart-wise in the 2000's. In terms of total sales, I think it's a little behind Backspacer which went on to sell 635k.

Given the album sales environment, I think the sales of "Lightning Bolt" are on par with the sales of "Backspacer." I don't know what the "exact" equivalent is, but I'd guesstimate that 500,000 in sales in 2013 represent the same level of "popularity" as 635,000 in sales in 2009.
Heard (full version of) Sirens on 95.5 PLJ here in Jersey on my way home from work tonight. Not even 2 minutes after it ended, turn to 105.5 WDHA and Jeremy comes on. Love hearing them on the radio.

We (PJ freaks) are not that many then.
I always wonder does this number include digital download sales from 10C?
Maybe a lot of people use unofficial ways to reach the album? Which decreases the sales figures?
What's your part, who you are?
2012: Arras, Berlin 1-2
2013: Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires
2014: Milano, Trieste, Vienna, Berlin
2016: NY MSG 1
Dec 6. are the grammy nominations. Will they get the 1 this year or will they be shutout?
Did they make it out in time? Can't ever keep the dates straight. It always seems like stuff gets nominated a long time after the release.
Oh my bad Sept. 30 was the final date. For the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards, albums must be released between Oct. 1, 2012 and Sept. 30, 2013. Since LB came out on Oct 15, it won't be. But MYM and I think Sirens are eligible for rock song/record.
