YOU ARE THE AMAZING ONE!!
not at all. just a guy, playing with the cards he's been dealt.

driving to my little part time job this morning, I started to choke up again...thinking about the care package I received. It was close to full on bawling, but I kept it together.

something amazing happened today  .....

but, before I get to that, a little update. I'm trying my damndest to stay upbeat and doing a pretty good job, most of the time. unfortunately the COMBO of chemo and radiation is beginning to kick my butt a little. you know how you feel when you've had about two hours of sleep and when you go to work all you can think about is coming home and going back to bed? well, that's about how I feel all the time. and, even with plenty of sun block chapstick, my lips are sore all the time. I'm eating about 4-5 meals a day to "fatten up" but I'm getting a little burnt on that, too. but, all in all, things are going pretty good.

now, for the amazing part.... I came home from my daily radiation today and there was a package waiting. from the return address, I deduced  it was from a board member who had asked for my address a while back. I opened it up and, I'm telling you, the love literally flowed out. inside were cards, books, gift cards and an AUTOGRAPHED PEARL JAM BASEBALL from board members around the world!!!!! Oh, my god. I didn't cry but I was choking up pretty good (still am, as a matter of fact). You people are amazing!!!!!!! When I get to the bottom of how this came together, I am going to personally thank every last one of you. It was an incredible act of kindness to show some random guy who you may not know much more about other than he loves Pearl Jam, has a goofy golden retriever and lives and dies with the SF Giants (World Champs, ya know ;) )

I could go on and on. You folks blow me away. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!! With your help, I'll take you up on your directive to "kick cancer's sorry ass!!!" (that made me laugh  )

    Rob

I see I used "amazing" more than a few times. but that's what this was. amazing. maybe even a-fucking-mazing

that is amazing! wtg everyone

Just a little information for you...crying is actually therapeutic. Emotionally, of course, but physically too. When we cry with real emotion (not the way actors do), we actually release toxins in through our tears. Apparently those particular toxins can only be released through tears, and when we feel better after a good cry, it's because we have expunged the toxins. So cry for the joy and the love that you receive, it heals.

so...I go in for radiation today. I'm wearing a Pearl Jam shirt. One of the techs says "we can put on some Pearl Jam if you'd like."

next thing you know, I'm laying on the table, the zap noises are happening and Evenflow is coming down from above. Is that service or what?

What? You ain't got no PJ socks? Huh hum! Let's get Rob some PJ socks. We all know the feets get cold in a hospital. We can ask 10C to put those anti-slippy things on both sides so Rob doesn't have to remember which way to put them on. 8-) Hello, 10C?

    Rob, be and get well!

Sorry to hear it man. Luckily though, it sounds like you have a really good prognosis, and you have an even more positive attitude.

On a side note, I always thought you were a lot younger judging from your posts, haha. You seem pretty cool though, I always think it's awesome that people still think young, instead of feeling like they have to "grow up" and get boring. Best of luck to ya mate, but I think you've got this handled. ;)

My name is Tom. I'm a firefighter with Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. I've known Rob for several years. Although, after seeing how many posts he has on this forum many of you may know him better than I do. (pretty sure we haven't had 6000 conversations) I do know that if Rob approaches his fight with cancer with the same passion that he has for his wife, the SF Giants and life in general then cancer hasn't a "snowballs chance in hell" against him. Rob sent me an e-mail the other day that said "wait 'til I tell you what some 10c members did for me." After reading the thread today my wife and I were completely blown away by the outpouring of support for Rob. We found ourselves crying by the end (gotta get those toxins out :) Rob considers each and every one of you true friends. To the person or group of people who put together the care package: The contents of that box was more powerful than any dose of chemo or radiation that Rob will receive throughout the course of his treatment! Rob is a superfan of PJ. We've shared music, videos (his extensive collection made me question my PJ fanhood) and stories about the band. Like the one when I was working security at the Alladin in Las Vegas in '93 and Eddie was skateboarding up and down the line of people waiting to get into the venue. They were all oblivious...forest for the trees thing I guess. Classic E.V. move! What Rob won't tell you is that he was a great fire captain who had a positive influence on countless lives and trained hundreds of firefighters to do the same over his career. He was outspoken when the time was right and was highly respected for that alone. In the twilight of his career when he had the seniority to bid to a slower area of town Rob chose to stay at Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Central Station only blocks from the Fremont Street Experience where he felt he could do the most good. It's one of the busiest houses in the country! Rob please let me know if there's anything Lucy or I can do for you guys. What a support network: Pearl Jammers and Firefighters. Doesn't get much better than that brotha! Best of luck and trust in music...it's never let me down. See you in Vancouver my friend :D
Hold onto the thread, the currents will shift. ;)

Awesome post, Rob your a well-loved man my friend.
After I learned that Rob was a firefighter I knew he had to be an awesome one despite joking with me once that all firefighters want to do is sit around and be lazy! It's great to read this from one of the people who's known him on and off this board.
