The Los Angeles Lakers are nearing an agreement to acquire All-Star point guard Chris Paul in a three-team trade that will cost them Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Lakers are finalizing the trade with the New Orleans Hornets and Houston Rockets. Under the terms of the deal, the Lakers would send Gasol to the Rockets. The Hornets would receive Odom, Rockets guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and forward Luis Scola, league sources said.

“It’s not finalized, but we’re close,” one front-office official involved in the negotiations said.

so now the owners can just piss and moan if they don't like a trade? who gives a shit if the nba owns the team

if stern caves to this he will officially become the worst commissioner in sports history

and NO is getting like 30 players in return...this isn't like that lopsided a trade

They want Chris Paul on the team until they can sell it to somebody. If he's not there they probably wouldn't get as much as they would like for the team.

Hey, any way they can keep teams from stockpiling stars is fine with me. Nobody wants to watch the same teams exceed every year. Of course, I'm saying this as someone that hates the Lakers. If a Knicks trade got put on hold I'd probably be pissed.

Although I agree that the Lakers were giving up quite a bit for CP3 - Gasol, one of the league's premier power forwards, and Odom, a valuable scorer.

Phil Jackson called this on 12/29/10 about NBA owning Hornets: "When Chris says he has to be traded, how’s that going to go?"

NBA spokesman Tim Frank: "League office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons."

    really? basketball reasons?

    not curling reasons?

    paddle tennis reason?

why don't you just say, we declined this trade because we didn't spend five months locking out players to have a small market team lose their best players to the big bad, Los Angeles Lakers. Oh, and we certainly aren't going to give an active union guy that satisfaction.
