Ed counts in to Oceans but its horribly timed, the band starting up a few seconds after Ed starts singing and the music sounding all out of tune very early into the piece. Fortunately Low Light is much better and possibly one of the best of the tour, especially the latter half of the song. Present Tense makes a surprise appearance third song in. Interstellar Overdrive stems the flow I feel (I think it does this alot) but Corduroy makes it back up. As usual, Lightning Bolt doesn't disappoint. Amongst The Waves is another making a surprise appearance; the intro extended whilst Ed talks to the crowd. My Fathers Son is dedicated "to anyone who has ever had a father in prison...". It's easily the best performance of the three times it has been played so far at this point. Like Getaway, I think the live version isn't a patch on the studio version. Swallowed Whole is really good, Ed putting in a much better performance than at San Diego. Immortality.....breathless. The guitars at the start of Infallible are excellent, really punchy with a bunch of attitude. Small Town and Future Day slow the tempo down momentarily, the former very good and the crowd in good voice; the latter is ok, a strange choice mid-main set instead of the encore but weirdly I preferred it here. Even Flow and Evolution are solid as ever. After Even Flow, Ed mentions about a guy that was in distress in the crowd during Future Days and it took him (Ed) 'outta the game for a minute but the guy is okay' with the medics attending to him; I think this can be attributed to Ed losing his way in Future Days. Mind Your Manners appears later in the main set and benefits from this I feel; as with the last few performances it's getting better and better live. Sirens is good apart from Ed's guitar being completely out of tune, which he ditches. There have been many errors from Ed on Sirens throughout the tour but this time he's blameless and it's understandable his reaction after the gig. No Way is played for the first time since PJ20, Ed's vocals a pure delight early on IMO. The guitar licks throughout are a nice touch and different from usual performances of the song. Blood makes a welcome return to the setlist and closes the main set. A different main set from the 'norm' if you like but one I quite enjoyed and didn't feel lacked too much flow.

Betterman opens the first encore with a Save It For Later tag. It's very good as per usual, despite a little guitar flub by Ed in the intro. He again makes a flub in Daughter, dropping a verse early on. A short tag of Another Brick In The Wall is included and overall its a good performance. Ed then addresses the crowd and talks about Roskilde and how they dealt with it. He talks about the first year and says while spending time in New York he got to spend time with Lou Reed. He talks briefly about how much he misses Lou; Ed's cover of After Hours is then debuted. Sleeping By Myself is solid enough, as is Mother. Breath - I just love hearing this on a boot. It doesn't even matter that most of the time Ed gets the lyrics wrong, I just love hearing the song. Go & Porch is a solid ending to a good first encore.

Ed tells the crowd at the second encore "When does a Pearl Jam concert end? When they kick us out!". They play Last Kiss to the crowd behind the stage. Ed's guitar sounds a little rough during the intro of Unthought Known. Love Reign O'er Me is solid, Alive is just awesome. Such an anthem. Mike's guitar disappears for the last part of Alive (during his 2nd solo), he's off crowd-surfing! At the start of Rockin' In The Free World just before he starts singing you hear Ed shout "c'mon you fuckers" and mess up the first line. Stone is on fire taking lead guitar. It's the last song of the show, an interesting one to say the least. From what I've previously read this one gets mixed opinions both on the fanview thread and about the boot. I quite enjoyed it, there are some errors but the only really bad ones where the start of Oceans and the out of tune guitar on Sirens. I preferred this to LA1.

"Everyone in?" says Ed as the opening refrains of Pendulum start. Nothingman and Small Town follow, the crowd excellent on both when Ed offers them the vocals. Why Go is the perfect transition from the opening slow tempo to drive the tempo up, Hail Hail continuing the pace. The combo of Lightning Bolt and Mind Your Manners do the same, reasonable performances for both. Dissident makes its final appearance of the tour. Faithfull is dedicated to the fans who helped out a Brazilian fan who had her belongings stolen outside the venue, Ed tells the crowd. There is definitely guitar problems during the first minute of the song and it actually continues throughout the song making for a distracting performance. Ed duly notes this after the song thanking Mike for 'hanging in there'. To me it still feels that the guitar isn't quite right during Setting Forth which leads into Corduroy. Any hint of guitar problems are wiped out by Corduroy which is solid. Even Flow is the same, as expected. Ed then goes on a rant about Dick Cheney which, while I agree on Ed's principle about same sex marriage, is out of place at the gig. Sirens gets the music back on track and minus minimal trouble for Mike and Boom it's a good performance, the singalong outro extended too. Daughter complete with WMA tag is excellent. The set loses momentum with Unthought Known and Let The Records Play I'm afraid. Down unexpectedly doesn't pick the momentum up and State Of Love And Trust is also poor with Ed forgetting lyrics. A good Betterman ends the main set.

After Hours begins the first encore but it isn't as good as the first play in LA, Ed fumbling notes towards the end of the song. Yellow Moon is bliss. Last Kiss is played to the crowd behind the stage and at the side, which includes some kids and friends from the Bridge School; Ed noting that the reason why they have played this area quite alot because of their performances at the Bridge School and what a pleasure and honour it is. Continuing the 'Bridge School set' to quote Ed is Just Breathe. Thin Air, played for the first time since Camden '08, continues the theme. It's certainly not the best I've heard but still good. The start is slightly different and at first a little strange but the song gets better as it progresses along. Next up is three from Yield - Given To Fly, Untitled and MFC. Untitled is good, I love when Ed always changes the lyrics up on this. Frankly MFC is forgettable and an atrocious performance by the band. I have no idea what happens at the start but all instruments stop apart from Ed's guitar who then mumbles the lyrics for a while before getting to the chorus and the rest of the band get going. But it still doesn't get any better. Ed says at the end "if you wanna see a perfect show there'll be one here in a month or so" or words to that effect as if that performance of MFC was acceptable. Big Wave is just about ok but there is problems lyrically and with Mike's guitar (again). Evolution is a bit of a mess at times too. Ed again forgetting chunks of lyrics. I'm guessing he is rather drunk at this point. John Doe joins onstage for The New World, at times the co-vocals just don't sound right. Porch is alot better fortunately and closes a very disjointed first encore, only Yellow Moon, Just Breathe, Thin Air, Untitled and Porch good cuts.

Smile opens the second encore. Black is excellent. Alive is solid as ever. Fuckin' Up is quality, love hearing this one. An excellent Indifference brings an indifferent boot to a close. A strange one. From Pendulum to Daughter (Faithfull aside) you couldn't fault the show but then it went downhill from there with poor performances and technical problems. Least favourite boot of the tour.

Matt's drumming really accentuates the dynamics of this great version of Release. Life Wasted follows, making a strong personal reflection opening combo. Severed Hand is quality, tight performance. Matt is on fire and extra forceful in much of Corduroy. Although it's not too messy, Ed fumbles a few words in DTE and at least one of the transitions is a little awkward. If DTE was a smidgen loose, Dissident makes up for it. Matt and Mike were basically spot on for it, a really tight version. Ed's vocals are strong for Marker. In Hiding to follow is a beautiful choice. It's a fantastic rendition of the melodic Yield tune. Ed's vocals hold up well in the chorus too, always a plus. Betterman makes a mid-set appearance and having Daughter precede may seem boring but it flows beautifully. Actually, Marker-In Hiding-Betterman-Daughter is one of the highlights of the main set. It's such a fantastic quality stretch of melodic mid tempo songs that worked well together. "With My Own Two Hands" tag on Daughter doesn't occur too frequently either, interesting to hear it. Garden drops us down into a bit of a darker feel, different set flow to this main set for sure. It's not the worst version, but clearly not the tightest. Ed starts to sing the first chorus, but where it's the reworked 2006 version he was supposed to go into the next verse instead. He catches himself and it's not a sloppy version, but a little off. I Got Shit keeps the darker vibe going, Matt's drumming is again superb (high hat accents, rolls). SOLAT gets the tempo up immediately after. Ed is a little off time, singing too fast in a few parts. It actually works in a way by making the song feel urgent. Strangely enough, we drop back down for the somber intro of Inside Job. It and WWS that follow are a solid double take of Avocado. Porch ends the main set; Stone and Mike putting on great work.

Wasted Reprise opens the first encore before going into Man of the Hour. Ed's guitar is a little ropey right before the "Nature has its own religion" part. Waiting on a Friend is enjoyable, but not as tight as the version in Santa Barbara 06. Ed's vocals are definitely ear pleasing on the rare cover. The rest of the encore is fairly standard but good plays, Small Town-Black-Alive. Ed sounds very emotional in Black, a nice version. Matt's snare sounds rich and full bodied in Black too. Nevertheless, much of the second encore we can hear Ed struggling. Go is decent, but his vocals are getting thin. The same goes for Why Go and Comatose that follow. Matt's drumming is a little awkward in Why Go, maybe a technical error. Ed still sounds a bit winded in Smile. The ending of Smile is considerably messy, it’s clear the band couldn’t figure out how they wanted to stop the song. Some of the guitar work in RITFW is rough, Stone sounds like he might have had a technical error too. Ledbetter closes the show.

Although the band really seemed to be in good spirits and enjoying Pittsburgh, the last half of the show really takes this one down a few notches. The main set is quite good with interesting mid tempo set list flow. Encore 1 is somewhat vanilla, and Ed struggles throughout the entire 2nd encore with his voice. A decent boot, but uneven.

Pendulum opens show #21 of the Fall tour, the first few notes sounding seriously off. Overall it's not as fluid a version as previously seen on the tour IMO. Subdued performances of Low Light and Sometimes follow, Ed saying to the crowd during Sometimes 'just warming up'. Instellar Overdrive/Corduroy starts the tempo rising as does Lightning Bolt & Mind Your Manners double. It's competent performances in all 3 songs but nothing outstanding. The opening 6 songs is the same opening used in Buffalo. A couple of early cuts are next in Animal and Deep. Ed then talks to the crowd and dedicates Sirens to Tomas Young & his wife who are in the crowd. It's nice to hear a solid live performance of the song. Ed then tells the crowd that they spent Thanksgiving wishing Matt a happy birthday and thankful that he is in the band, Ed also saying "I want to be like Matt when I grow up". You Are follows but Stone's guitar sounds way off and rough throughout the performance making for a substandard play. The rest of the guys seem lowkey throughout as well. Infallible is good, one lyrical error which Ed acknowledges mid-song. After Hours makes another appearance, it's debut still the best performance. Rats is excellent. Lukin is aborted. Ed then goes on a tangent how it annoys him when people refer to Portland as 'P-town'. Once Lukin does start again, I'm fairly certainly Ed doesn't actually attempt to get any of the words right for the verses. Last Exit starting at the end of Lukin is a nice surprise. Rearviewmirror closes the main set.

The End starts off the first encore; Ed telling the crowd it's a request. With solid performances of Yellow Moon and All Those Yesterdays, it's a great start to the encore. Just Breathe is dedicated to one of the West Memphis Three who is in the crowd. As with the previous 3 songs in the encore it fits perfectly, so subtle. After Mother, State Of Love And Trust ups the tempo and it's a much better performance than the previous time played at Oakland. Why Go is killer, the bass on the intro superb. Likewise Porch hits the straps, the guys seriously on form during the instrumental.

Ed gets everyone to sing Happy Birthday to Matt at the beginning of the second encore. Betterman starts off the encore. Ed talks during Wasted Reprise specifically about Tomas Young and also Ed's own comments regarding Dick Cheney he said during the Oakland show. It's another powerful speech by Ed, at times he struggles to control himself and not lose control. He briefly sings the Wasted Reprise lyrics and then the band goes into Life Wasted. Stone begins the intro to Alive but quickly stops and the guys start messing around briefly, Ed can be heard saying 'It’s Matt’s birthday, let’s play some jazz'. Stone then starts Black; evidently he'd forgotten they were supposed to play it and went for Alive instead. Alive does indeed get played after Black. Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and a reunited Sleater-Kinney join onstage for Rockin' In The Free World, which is the final show of the gig.

This boot would rank about average for me. There is nothing terrible here but nothing spectacular either, thus the average rating.

Oceans is a welcomed rarity, leading perfectly into Corduroy. It's not my favorite take on Oceans, but still largely pleasant. Matt's drumming on both Corduroy and Grievance that follows is pure energy. Of course, it's the memorable version of Grievance from Touring Band. Gods' Dice isn't quite perfect, but it's a convincing version with no distracting errors. Animal sounds ferocious here. The guitar tones from Mike and Stone are thick and crunchy, both putting on excellent performances. Matt is on tonight, most of these opening songs have had extra beats, fills, and raw live energy. Ed tells the crowd about his many mosquito bites he's recently received, Red Mosquito naturally follows. The solo before the outro is great, Mike and Matt are perfect. It's a good version of the No Code rarity. I've always thought Red Mosquito-GTF make a wonderful combo stylistically, the former's outro into the latter's intro is smooth and fluent. There's more tribal-like drumming from Matt before the first chorus in GTF. It too is just an excellent, lively performance from all. The elegant set flow continues nicely with an excellent Faithfull, and the "woman upstairs" improv is cool. Small Town keeps with the mid tempo before a brutal Lukin kicks in. It's one of the tightest and best versions of the quick rocker I've heard in a long time. To have an equally fantastic NFY immediately follow is PJ perfection in the finest. Ed's vocals sound like he's swallowing nails, but damn it works. Matt and Stone are providing effective dynamics, making for one of the best versions of NFY I've heard as well. Another epic vocal delivery from Ed in the Wrong Child tag in Daughter, my personal favorite tag for the staple. There's a little live static/buzz during Off He Goes, but it's not too bad. Betterman is a pleasant, sprightly take by all. Insignificant is mostly just average. Nothingman is considerably atmospheric, a haunting rendition. Even Flow makes a late appearance. Mike and Stone putting on the grooves heavy. Go is great with a couple different vocal melodies by Ed. An intriguing way to end the magnificent main set, the rare Parting Ways is majestic (even with a hint or two of mic feedback). Stone's guitar tone is very interesting as well, wonderful textures.

The band comes out swinging with a few heavy numbers. DTE kicks us off, Stone firing on all cylinders. Ed says the band is thankful 2 bored people up front have left. He also notes that he smelled something bad throughout the gig that the whole band had noticed. At first they thought it was the polluted air from Governor Bush (haha), but it was probably those two bored people. Whipping-Once are next and both very solid. Footsteps drops us back down. Mike and Ed are particularly strong. Crazy Mary follows nicely. Ed has to improv the opening lines after mismatching them, but he does it well. Otherwise, it's a very fine rendition with Mike and Stone sounding great. RITFW concludes the gig, Mike's solos standing out a good deal.

This is a fairly short boot, under 2 hours. Still, the band appears to be in a good mood and put on a great show. There are many sections in this gig where the flow feels perfect. It's a tight show as well; Matt was having an extra energetic night. In the end, Houston 2 is a high quality bootleg.

There is no self importance. Some people add their thoughts & review a boot when listening. Some don't. Either way works. Not sure what your problem is.
