Can someone recommend a 2012 Euro or South American boot where the crowd sings the guitar parts? I can't remember exactly when/where it started but I've heard it on PJRadio and I think it's so awesome.

    Thanks!

    Hartford 2013

Gorgeous version of Pendulum opens. Long Road sounds pretty tight and transitions perfectly into Sometimes. These 3 openers all are quality versions making this the best opening of a show yet in 2013 tour (it's the 9th show in). That's nothing to be taken lightly and a high praise for this boot. Keeping with the good flow is Corduroy and Lightning Bolt to up the tempo. At this point in the boot you can tell, this baby is mixed well. It's bright, crisp, and just sounds so good. I could use more body to the guitars, but they still have good crunch. Matt’s snare has an incredibly bright pop with just the right overtone and punch. Ed sounds slightly raspy towards end of LB but not in a bad way really, and Mike’s solo is wonderful too. MYM has gotten tighter at this point in the tour and doesn't sound like the disaster it did the first few gigs. Last Exit is much better here than Brooklyn 2, its tour debut. No timing issues and Ed sounds comfortable with the song. Ed acknowledges how loud and receptive the crowd is. Immortality drops the tempo but not the quality of performance. It fits in well to provide dynamics to the flow of the show. Here it sounds a little heavier than usual, a good thing in my book. This is caused by Matt’s half open high hats before the first solo and a more driving drum rhythm than usual. Ed almost messes up the second verse in Even Flow but covers it up very well. It's quick and not very noticeable. On the other hand, Matt’s mini drum solo is noticeable and spices up the song. Ed shows what a humble front man he is by stating that such a great crowd like this one can make a "shitty" band like them sound good. Alone is a rare treat and may be the best version I have heard. Having Ed sing the very end of Alone like the studio version, by himself, transitions nicely into Unthought Known. On a similar note, the ending of Unthought works well to enter immediately into the opening of Records Play, which is a solid version with a good jam at the end. To be clear, this show flows like a well-oiled machine. Save You is a little rusty but not what I would call a bad version. A few small timing issues and brief incorrect lyrics, but the extended outro is energetic. Save You into DTE really rocks with a "fuckin South America" crowd singing loud. Better Man ends this simply amazing main set, easily the best one up to this point in the tour. Bravo to the band and the crowd!

Yellow Moon opens encore 1 which is just an incredible live song all around. Come Back is more convincing than usual; Ed's vocals are some of the best I've heard. Before Future Days Ed gives a humorous speech about what the song is about. Only he can do it justice, but it's about spending time with your fucking partner or fucking your partner. Also it applies to parenting. Future Days is an ok version, it was excellent until the end where Ed just messes up lyrically a very little bit. Boom and Matt get off time with the intro to Chloe Dancer, but I doubt many will pick up on it. Transition into Crown of Thorns is perfection, as is the song (the bridge sounds a little too quiet but nothing to frown upon). Eruption right into Ain’t Talkin ‘Bout Love puts a big smile on my face. One time only, not quite, but only in Hartford it seems. You can tell the band was having a lot of fun and it actually sounds pretty good overall. While Boom plays gently in the background for Wasted Reprise Ed gives what is undoubtedly his most profound speech in the tour concerning gun control and the freedom to speak about it publically. The crowd is mostly receptive to what Ed is saying; I didn’t hear many booing at all. I appreciate his comments and mostly agree with what he presents here. Life Wasted is one of the liveliest sounding takes I have heard in a while. It is not perfect though. Ed once again just slightly messes up the second verse, but not by much and sounds a little thin vocally. Porch closes the first encore which is not as good as the main set but still far above average in terms of performance, setlist, emotion, and energy level.

Encore 2 starts with Small Town, which is nice getting it out of the main set, and is played to the back of the stage for folks there. The solos and interplay between Boom and Mike towards the end of Crazy Mary doesn’t get any better than what’s given here. Simply incredible. Go serves to get the crowd rocking again towards the shows conclusion, Ed’s voice is starting to weaken at this point though, but the music is spot on. Fuckin Up makes its first appearance since Calgary 2011. Stone’s solos are invigorating. Overall, a respectable rendition of the Uncle Neil cover. As Indifference closes this magnificent show Ed compliments the crowd again on how amazing they have been. You can tell he absolutely loved the crowd that evening; he wasn’t just trying to rally them.

As lengthy as this review may be, it still does not do this bootleg justice. Philly 2 was a turnaround show in my opinion for the 2013 tour, which had shows up to that point that were ranging from just really good to below average. Nothing spectacular. While Philly 2 was the first great show of 2013, Hartford has replaced it easily as the best of the first 9 shows of the 2013 tour, and will be a force to be reckoned with for the remainder of the tour. I doubt it will leave my top 3 for this tour as a whole. If you only buy one of the first 9 shows of 2013, buy this one. It is by far the best imo, not to take away from the other shows that were good, but this one is another kind of beast.

2013 is really growing on me now. Between the length of these shows, the setlists, and some of the recent performances it is turning around for the best.

  Really enjoyed reading your review of what was the best PJ show I have ever been to. It was a night I will never forget. The crowd was on another planet, singing along to just about every song. This version of "Long Road" was the most emotional version, to me, next to Virginia Beach 2000. I had a feeling the band would play it for Newtown. First time I heard it I had chills when the music reached its climax right before the final "I have wished for so long..." and hearing Ed do that scream(?) and had chills again listening to the boot. I think this version will always give me chills whenever I listen to it. That's the power of Eddie and the band. "Come Back" was another one that gave me chills and started to make my eyes tear up a bit.

I don't know what this band did from when I saw them in 2010 and the 2 shows this year, but these shows have a Springsteen-like quality to them. The shows were some of the most amazing things I have witnessed and the Hartford show was something I have a hard time describing to people how incredible it was. I am happy to say the boot has done the crowd justice on DTE and Better Man; incredible to hear how loud we really were during those two songs. When Ed greeted the crowd after "Last Exit," the band were taken aback by the reception of the crowd. And one more comment about the crowd on the boot: I wish the crowd was turned up just a bit more on "Alive" to really hear and understand why Ed said it "fucking unbelievable!" Like he said before Indifference, the crowd that night certainly was not normal.

    Amsterdam 1 2012

This show is all about certain "segments" in the set and I really enjoy this boot. The first 5 songs of the set couldn't be more profound to set the table for the rest of the show and is where the first "segment" begins. One of my personal favorites and is always great way to start a show is the lethal combination of Interstellar Overdrive > Corduroy to open. I've always felt Corduroy is a monster opener and rarely starts things off anymore, but this killer tandem takes us back to the 2000 tour and it's just great. Immediately after Corduroy we shift right into a punching version of Why Go, and the transition is absolutely sublime. On Why Go, we receive an extended drum solo, which may have been a bass guitar issue from Jeff initially, but it really works well. Matt's drums sound punchy as hell and crisp, and we hear some crunchy guitar bites on this mix. The energy continues to build up with Given To Fly and then Brain Of J, which makes its only appearance during the 2012 tour. I always put a significant amount of emphasis on the opening 5 songs to determine how a show will sound, the vibe, the mood, and what Ed's master mind is feeling for the show - and I just love the way this show starts off and it's obvious they wanted to come out guns blazing for this gig. Although Ed does sound a tad shrieky in the first 5 songs, he clears it up and sounds strong. After Brain Of J, we get our next "segment" in the middle of the set and it's a nice slow breakdown consisted of Amongst The Waves, which sounds very warm, and Elderly Woman into In Hiding. Before Elderly Woman, E first addresses the crowd with what sounds like butchered Dutch and the transition from Elderly Woman into In Hiding is fantastic. The "slow" breakdown then gets back into up-tempo mode next with Even Flow and World Wide Suicide. Things continue to stay up as we transition into our next "segment" and superb transition with heavy guitar work with Rats > Lukin > Not For You. We get very rich and heavy guitar work on the aforementioned sequence and I'm not even the biggest fan of those songs, but they hit heavy. We then receive another slower and beautiful "segment" with an excellent performance and inspiring version of Better Things into a warm-fuzzy performance of Nothingman. Average performances of The Fixer and DTE close out the main set.

The only proverbial "weaker" part of this boot/show consists of the 1st encore IMO. It starts off with Last Kiss and they fuck up the intro and have to start over immediately. They then play Just Breathe and then bring things back up wit Comatose into building performances of Unthought Known and Porch to close out the main set. I feel they do try and recover with the last two songs of the first encore, but I thought the entire encore was the most weak of the entire show, which by PJ standards, is still killer.

The second encore beings our next "segment" with the song requests and they play two song requests from people in the crowd right off the bat opening with one of my personal all-time favorite PJ songs Smile and then Green Disease. Both strong performances. Next are quite strong performances of crowd pleasers Love Reign O'er Me and Black with a nice extended outro from the crowd. RITFW and Indifference close the first night in 2012 in Amsterdam out.

I absolutely love the way that this set list flows and it just has as an organic flow to it and it seems like each song transitions very well into the next. It seems the entire set has the minor "segments" in it that feature songs in it that when played together, accent each other nicely. I hate to sound like a broken record, but it's another very tight performance from the band (which is another day at the office for PJ) for 2012. Ed isn't quite as chatty on this night, but in a good mood. The overall mix is solid, with a lot of body and crunch coming from the guitars, and while Matt's drums aren't the most crisp sounding on this mix, they are still punchy and do sound crisp all together. No extraordinary crowd energy or anything, but the flow for this show is no nice in my opinion, and it's just a solid, fun show and an above average boot.

What you said about Alone, Crazy Mary, Chloe dancer/Crown of thorns, Long road, Pendulum and Last exit is spot on.
Although Mind your manners is better in comparison with the two Worchester version I have it still isn't perfect.

Yeah MYM is still not perfect, but not the mess that it was in Pitts. I found it to be just marginally better than the Worcester gigs, but I agree it's fair to call them comparable. It's gotten tighter but probably will never sound just right. Glad you enjoyed the boot though and the review wasn't too off base. Happy to help.

    Baltimore 2013

Stone's guitar dies during the intro of Pendulum. It's noticeable but luckily doesn't distract too greatly and gets fixed quickly. Ed's vocals during the "ah a ah" part (which is hard to describe on paper and looks funny I know) of Pendulum is kind of forced; similar to the version in Philly 1. I guess he likes to sing it like that sometimes, and is just a nit-picky critique of mine. Hard to Imagine makes its tour doubt and sounds really beautiful. Best version in a few years for sure. I'm not sure how well Small Town works following HTI, but it's suitable I suppose. Lightning Bolt holds onto its typical 4th or 5th song in set placement to get the crowd moving. Ed acknowledges this is the first time the band has played in Baltimore. Lukin makes an early appearance with Ed screaming like crazy. A fun version of the song and a bit stronger than usual on Ed's part vocally, especially the last few years. The audio mix is comparable to Hartford, which is excellent and crisp. Although not as bad as the early 2013 gigs, the intro to MYM sounds a little messy here. Sirens-Habit-Daughter does not have the best flow when placed together like this, but all are dependable versions. Ed flubs up the lyrics to Wishlist some. He has done better in recent years to remember the lyrics, but slips up here and no tag or extended outro. The same issue happens directly after in Present Tense, another small lyrical mix up by Ed, somewhat distracting. STBC ups the energy and tempo, especially paired with Records Play. But that energy dips soon after with Setting Forth and Unthought Known to a certain extent. Unthought into RVM is a smooth transition to close the main set on a high note though. A nice performance overall, but a hard to follow setlist in the main set with little to no flow is unfortunate.

Encore 1 as a whole is close to perfection, and helps correct the nonexistent flow of the main set. It moves fluently and builds tension nicely. Man of the Hour makes its third and final appearance in the entire 2013 tour. Luckily it is by far the best version out of the three with Ed’s voice sounding incredibly strong. Nothingman also finds Ed in solid voice. I’ve heard Ed was fighting a cold at the beginning of the tour and I believe it because on some the first few gigs he sounded weak. However, a few of these latter shows in leg 1 have Ed sounding the best he has since 2003 at some points. Cover of Waiting For The Man makes it first and only live performance yet. Most of encore 1 is clearly dedicated to Lou Reed who passed away earlier that day. To be the first time the Reed cover was performed, it was solid. This ends the four “Man” song stretch, cleverly put together. Betterman-DTE always pairs effectively in that order, and one of the better DTE this tour (the crowd sing along is thankfully missing). Having Blood and Porch close the encore is brilliant and pure adrenaline. Matt’s drumming on Porch being more forceful than usual. Listen to Stone’s rhythm during Mike’s solo (2 minute mark until 3 minute mark stretch in particular) and I dare you to keep still. That groove is simply pure Stone.

Ed praises the crowd for being a “Saturday night crowd on a Sunday.” Love Reign O’er Me also makes its tour debut and sounds only decent. Tiny lyrical mess up at the very beginning of the interlude but it’s far from shrewd, and Ed’s screams are a little on the shrill or thin side. Black sounds a tad off on Ed’s part vocally and lyrically too in the first verse and first chorus. Guessing this is due to two facts; it is towards the end of the show and had to follow Love Reign, which is hard on the throat. That being said, neither is a bad version but just below PJ standards of what I know they are capable of. Towards the end of Black Ed introduces the band but skips Jeff (most likely purely on accident). Nonetheless, many fans made a big stink out of this as the cause why Jeff left the stage a bit early during the end of RITFW. I don’t think this was as news worthy as some made it. If there was any tension between Ed and Jeff, they made up the next show in Charlottesville where Jeff almost shed a tear while Ed was praising him and shared a bottle of wine. I digress and back to the review, Black-Alive-RITFW is a good but vanilla way to end the gig.

In the end, Baltimore can be described in three ways, (1) it is mostly a tight performance with no major errors, (2) the main set has basically no flow, (3) encore 1 is just about perfect in every way. This one is hard to judge as a whole, but I can say it is one of the better shows so far. It’s not better than Hartford, Philly 2, Brooklyn 2, or even Pittsburgh but it is on par with Worcester 1 and far better than the rest at this point. Baltimore is the tenth show of 2013 and only 3 shows remain in leg 1. I have a feeling it will rank towards the middle of my list for leg 1. I will say this, for those who do not care about flow too greatly you will probably enjoy this one more than I.

    London 2010

Things start off with one of my personal favorites as an opener, Given to Fly. Matt's drumming really stands out. Ed is a tad low in the mix at first but is fixed very quickly. Why Go is perfect in the number 2 slot of a set list. In a strange turn of events, a snippet of Pink Floyd's Brain Damage is played by Ed solo. It's a interesting way to lead into Corduroy for sure. This show was performed in front of a massive crowd at Hard Rock Calling. Having seen a few songs aired on TV from this gig, the band was simply on. An aggressive version of Once sounds just right following Got Some. The crowd's singing is almost as loud as Ed during Small Town. Even Flow sounds more invigorating than your average version. Jeff's bass sounds warm and full on Nothingman and the crowd's singing is impressively loud again. The next 5 song stretch is the highlight of the main set and perhaps the most energizing. Arms Aloft is performed passionately and well received by the crowd. Not For You immediately follows without a seconds break. A rare treat occurs which is a little something called Of the Earth, only it's second time played live. This is the best version I have heard (it's only been played 7 times). Eddie's vocals sound muscular and he seems to add more lyrics to this version than most others. The jamming that essentially makes the song is simply spectacular and tight too. A true pleasure is that Avocado outtake. State of Love and Trust is a good version, keeping the focus on energy and swift flow. Typically mid to late set has a few mid-tempo numbers that slow down the pace just a little. That's what makes this section of the show so good. It's just balls to the wall rock, if you'd pardon the phrase. Do the Evolution, played a little faster than normal, ends the five hard rocker song stretch. Well paired Wasted Reprise and Betterman conclude the main set. You can hear the concern in Ed's voice as he checked on the crowd several times throughout the main set. Before Wasted Reprise, he mentions how 10 years ago the tragedy occurred and praises the crowd for maintaining control. Listen to Ed's voice quiver in emotion during the intro to Betterman as he thanks the crowd and begins to sing. Also listen to how loud the crowd got during that part. Moments like that remind me to be grateful for life, this band, and what can make these performances so special.

Ed fucks up Just Breathe lyrically, the first and only error I caught in the entire show. Ed says he heard another guy one time sing Just Breathe but in a thick country accent. Hearing Ed do a country accent is priceless. Ben Harper comes out to play guitar on Red Mosquito, which is always a nice addition to a set in my opinion (with Ben or not). Black is breathtaking and powerful with Ed tagging "We belong together" over Mike's solo. A memorable version of the classic Ten cut. Go and The Fixer make late appearances in the set list but give encore 2 more flair. Alive and Ledbetter conclude the show.

Clocking in over 2 hours, this is one of the longer shows of the 2010 European leg. Musically it's extremely tight. Lots of concerned but positive emotion from the band for the enormous and loud crowd. Probably not in my top 5 boots from 2010 but still a great, above average bootleg for sure.

    Ottawa 2011

While Small Town is far from the most exciting opener, it does work well to acquaint the band and crowd with a nice “hello” and gets a crowd singing early. Having listened to a few 2010 boots here in last couple days I can hear a huge difference between them and these 2011 boots. Here on Ottawa , Ed’s voice has better depth and texture, all the instruments have more body and attack, and the crowd is still mixed at a decent level (although not as loud as 2010). Last Exit and DTE pick the pace up quickly to good effect, and both are energetic deliveries. Jeff’s bass, in particular, stands out on both songs. Ed has to mumble through a couple lines in MFC, but doesn’t stop singing which is good. The early part of the main set is heavy on Yield songs, 4 songs out of the first 7 to be more precise. That section also has an exceptionally nice flow and positive vibe to it. The rendition of Low Light here is amongst the best I have heard, and is the first of the only two times it was played in 2011. Ed’s voice sounds ridiculously strong, holding out that last note even a couple seconds after the band stops playing; quite impressive. Paired with this incredible song is another classic Yield tune, GTF which brings the energy back and the two are well suited together. This is one of my favorite beginnings or opening section of songs I have heard on any bootleg, the first 7 songs in particular are perfect together.

I revisit this Ottawa bootleg often. I remember reading some less than stellar opinions on the crowd that night. While I wouldn’t call them dead, the crowd is somewhat tame. I think it was still enough for the band to feed off, and they seem overall pleased with the crowd judging by a few comments by Ed throughout the gig. Also having watched a few videos from the show, the band was as full of energy as always (especially Ed). Setting Forth and Whipping are placed together, which is incredibly rare to have them back to back. Also slightly peculiar is Corduroy in the tenth song spot right before Even Flow. During Corduroy you can hear Matt’s snare ringing, which is nice considering how dead and thuddy it sounded in 2008 and just kind of a flat in 2009/2010. Here his snare has quick punch and a decently bright “pop” sound. Grievance also was quite the rarity in 2011; making its second and final appearance here of the tour. Ed gets a little ahead of the band shortly before the bridge of the song, but nothing too major. Ed gives a funny speech about how Mudhoney ripped him a new asshole. He was ok with his old asshole, but he likes the new one they ripped. Lukin-Breath is yet another uncommon combo. It’s not as effective as Lukin-Not For You, but really adds more subtle uniqueness to this already, in my opinion, unique setlist. To make it even better, Ed gets all the lyrics right to Breath (which is normally somewhat flawed). 1/2 Full is a nice addition to the set, and is an overall dependable version of the bluesy Riot Act track. Betterman ends the main set.

The End is a quality version. Ed’s voice sounds rich and his acoustic is more crisp and clean than usual. I’m not a fan of The End and Just Breathe being placed back to back like the usually are, but having Inside Job right between them helps provide some dynamics that lacks when the two are together. Mike starts Inside Job the moment Ed concludes The End. A long intro to Inside Job results and Ed went off to have a smoke on side of stage I believe. Although not too shabby, it’s not the best version of Inside Job. Ed sounds a bit nervous or cautious over the lyrics (as if he’s not sure if they were correct). The same small issue occurs later in one part of RVM, but not as noticeable. Neither are tragedies or major errors, thankfully. Off He Goes sounds nice and Why Go ups the ante to good result. A solid encore with no major flub ups and overall good flow.

Ed thanks the crowd a few times and then plays a request for a fan that’s had a significant loss; Come Back starts the rather short encore 2. It’s a dependable version; Ed gets the lyrics mostly correct and no noticeable error. The Real Me follows, which is gold. Ed sings his lungs out for this rocking Who cover. Jeff too, truly carries this tune with such a groovy bass line. Fortunately, Jeff is mixed pretty high in the mix. He stands out frequently on this bootleg. Alive and Ledbetter close the show in a fairly typical, but good fashion. The last couple minutes of jam towards the end of Alive sounds particularly lively.

I remember thinking back when these 2011 boots were first coming out that this one was overall Ed’s best vocal performance of the Canadian tour. I still contend it is one of his strongest. The setlist too has a killer flow and vibe about it. I was shocked to read some less than positive reviews from fans who attended the gig. The biggest complaint was the tame crowd, but that’s the case for Ottawa crowds from what I hear. I think the band saw it a little differently. Ed states before Alive that the crowd has been “great as a group.” The band seems very energetic, grateful for the crowd’s response, and put on a fantastic show. Unfairly compared to the famous Ottawa 2005 show, Ottawa 2011 is tied with Winnipeg as the most underrated boot of the 2011 tour. One of my personal favorites, this is just a superb live recording.

Brooklyn 2 again and again and again.

I remember shaking my head in disbelief at how frickin awesome was that stretch from present tense, rats (JEFF), unthought known (even with the lyric flub..the crowd was singing it :D) immortality (MATT), SOLAT, once (whoa), GTF, betterman. It was an unbelievable night. Can't wait for the Philly and Hartford boots get here

Looking for opinions: from the current 2013 bootlegs available…… I'm looking to choose between Philly 1 or Brooklyn 2. I went to Buffalo - Had a great time as always, but much prefer the set lists from other shows. Thanks and have a nice day.

    Cville 2013 8-)

Almost done with the main set, and in the process of writing an in depth review. I can tell you already though, Cville and Hartford are THE bootlegs of leg 1 2013. No doubt in my opinion.
