Have I mentioned how badly I would like my 2013 tour box set RIGHT NOW?
Loving the reviews of the 2013 shows so far. I've been so busy with work this time of the year that I haven't been able to dial in a boot and really divulge it in quite some time.
I'm looking forward to hearing the Hartford boot and hearing what people have to say about that. I heard from many people on here that it was the loudest crowd they've ever been a part of.

Brooklyn 2 sounding amazing right now. One little "complaint": crowd could have been turned up just a bit more. Either way, I'm in my happy place right now reliving this fun and incredible night. "Infallible" sounds really good live.

I bought the tour box set, but jumped the gun and accidentally bought this before seeing the box set.
I tend to put a lot of emphasis on the opening 3-5 songs on a boot/show - to determine sound, mood, crowd, etc. To me, PJ couldn't have really came out this tour and sounded better on the opening 5 songs of the tour and showing how the format would be throughout the tour with opening with some slower songs first - opening with Pendulum > Of The Girl > Nothingman > Small Town > Lightning Bolt. They sound very rich and warm and an point, and Ed sounds fairly strong. MYM does sound like a jumbled mess early on and seems to have some timing issues (I'm really not the biggest fan of the song), but I believe it gets better throughout the rest of the tour. As boyo79 pointed out earlier, the middle segment of the set with GTF > Untitled > MFC > Faithfull is superb. Before playing Sirens, Ed dedicates the song to an individual who was in college who interviewed him back in the early 90's up on a bridge. This is actually the second time that I can recall on a boot where Ed references this story and talks about this individual and the interview, and this person later losing their life. He also talks about this on the Vault #1 boot, which was shortly after Christmas of 1991 where this individual lost their life in a car crash. He actually says the interview took place on a bridge in Columbus, OH but in Pittsburgh he says it was Cincinnati, OH. I found this interesting he talks about the same story and individual at a show in 1992 and then again at a show in 2013. Unemployable is played next and makes its only appearance of the 2013 tour. A crunchy version of Why Go is next, with excellent sound of Jeff's bass line. Then a solid sequence of Daughter > Infallible > LTRP > Unthought Known > Rearviewmirror to close out the main set.
The first encore starts out beautifully with Speed Of Sound, Yellow Moon, and another beautiful version of Footsteps. I again have to say that most of the LB songs translate very well live and Yellow Moon is one of them. Then Ed introduces what sounds like an extremely wasted Jason Grilli, who gives a speech and sounds like a WWF wrestler before they play Whipping - the song that Grilli was introduced to and walked to the mound throughout the season. DTE > Better Man > Porch then close out the first encore.
A second encore standard of Black > Alive > RITFW > Yellow Ledbetter closes out the show.
Overall, I think it's a solid boot and the sound and mix are solid and comparable to the prior 2 years or so. Definitely a good start to what has become one of their best tours to date, and they sound fairly tight for the first night of the tour, with a few sloppy moments which is expected. Definitely a very good start to the tour for the guys. I have met and know several people who were at the Pittsburgh show, and have said the crowd was extremely loud. I like to feel the crowd on a boot, and I wish they would just mix up the crowd a tad more on the boots. This holds true for the past several years boots.
I can't wait to receive the box set!

Nice to see a new review from you, classy as always. I didn't write one for Pitts and since you and boy79 have reviews on the gig that I feel hold true as well, there's no need for me to write one. Great review.

The first show of the European 2012 tour opens with Release - THE quintessential PJ opener and their most powerful song IMO. Not a better way to start off a show, let alone a tour. This performance of Release is a beautiful performance - a very "simple" version of it, but very powerful. Probably my #1 highlight from this boot. Things pick up immediately after with very strong performances of DTE - Corduroy - The Fixer - Given To Fly. Ed then first addresses the crowd and talks about the first time playing in Manchester in 1992 and then drops the tempo down a bit going straight into Elderly Woman and then the first rarity of the tour with Pilate, which makes its only appearance of the 2012 tour here. Things are brought back up then with Even Flow into Unthought Known. A beautiful version of Nothingman makes an appearance before 1/2 Full and Insignificance. The Why Can't I Touch It jam is cool, and would have transitioned so well into Immortality next, but Ed screws up the guitar intro to Immortality and has to ask for a different guitar before starting over. It's a shame, because that sequence and transition would have been great without the mishap. Got Some and Why Go then close out the main set.
The first encore starts out with Just Breathe being dedicated to newly weds that are friends of Ed's and the band. The rest of the encore is fantastic starting with an excellent and very strong performance of Black, which receives one of the largest ovations from the crowd the entire night. SOLAT, Arms Aloft, and Porch to close out the first encore.
The second encore is started off with Better Man and then one of the only two times Come Back is played during the tour. Jeremy, Alive, and RITFW finish out the show fairly strong.
Overall - I think this is an average boot and a decent show. A very respectable and strong start to the tour and in all reality, not very many errors besides Ed's issue on the guitar intro on Immortality. For whatever reason, I didn't necessarily enjoy the flow of the set list and it was tough to grasp at certain times and feels slightly jumbled. I also thought the crowd sounded slightly dead at certain times, which may have had to do with the mixing of this boot in particular. Nonetheless, still a decent boot and good start to the tour.

Nice review and as usually is the case, I agree with you my man. Manchester 1 is a average show, yet very tight, but lacks energy and vibe. According to Ed in Manchester 2, this first nights crowd was lackluster. Night 2 in Manchester is the opposite to me, from night 1. Manchester 2 is filled with good vibes and energy. It's almost as tight too. Manchester 2 is the start to me of this great tour of 2012. Go into animal is always a sick way to start a gig.

Worcester 1 - My first boot from the 2013 tour. Its awesome! Although Ed was having a little trouble with his voice, he recovered quickly, to make for an awsome show. I downloaded it the other day, mainly for the setlist, and based on your reviews here (thanks by the way).
I'm looking forward to the Phoenix boot. I attended that show, and it was amazing, but I'll probably also get Charlottesville.

Personally I wouldn't class either Manchester show as average, especially taking into account these two open the tour - neither sound like a tour opening show, they are far better than that and the band are on fire from the start, showing no signs of rustiness. The crowd on both nights are fantastic and Ed comments early on night 2 is nothing more than his usual rallying the crowd.

The fact they came out swinging and so tight in the earliest shows of 2012 does say something about the quality of that tour. I don't know if any show of 2012 is really what I'd call sloppy or lackluster. Some have your typical rough spots or Ed's throat may be a bit rusty. Either way between the incredibly great sounding mixes and all around wonderful performances, 2012 is one of my personal favorites to listen to. Listened to all of Amsterdam 1 yesterday and this morning. So much fucking energy, and I prefer it to the overrated night 2. Although I really need to give it another listen as well.

Pendulum opens again, to me there seems to be more piano on this from the start than on the previous 2 plays. If there was any doubting Ed's vocals after Worcester I, he puts that to bed with an extremely strong performance on Lowlight - the end vocals very very impressive. Those end notes really signal the gig kicking off with Given To Fly, Do The Evolution, Mind Your Manners and My Fathers Son upping the tempo. Unfortunately I'm still not feeling the live performances of Mind Your Manners and it just doesn't fit in for me. My Fathers Son sounds like it's lacking abit of punch, especially the guitars but Ed's vocals are very good. Cropduster makes a welcome return albeit for the only time on the tour. It actually starts a really good run - Wishlist sounds brilliant, though there is no extended outro. Sirens is the best performance of the tour at this point. Ed says a few words about the Boston bombing before starting I Am Mine. Ed doesn't give his best vocal performance for Lukin but the band sound great on and follow it up with Not For You - I love that combo. After Down and State Of Love And Trust, Lightning Bolt finds itself mid-set. This really is a monster live, sounds so good on the boots. The guys go for an extended outro here and it's quality - this is one that could stay in the set longterm. Porch ends the main set on a high note.
The first encore starts with Other Side - first performance on a tour. Fuck it sounds good. Perfection really. Boom starts Future Days off on the organ and weirdly it sounds good. Ed starts Gone off acoustically before the band join in and it works well - this is a song that usually bores me live, here it sounds re-energised. As ever, Black is great and Jeremy is equally so. A few bars of Little Wing are teased before starting up with Daughter and like with Not For You there is no tag. The next are brutal when paired together - Even Flow and Rearviewmirror.
Smile opens the second encore, dedicated to Dick Dauphinee. Once & Alive follow. The crowd and band are in good voice for Baba O'Riley and Yellow Ledbetter brings the show to a close.
Best boot of the tour so far.

I really need to give Worcester 2 another listen in full. Loved it on first listen and second go around I couldn't get a feel for it. Maybe I was just in a weird mood. I do remember thinking it was the tightest show at that point when it first came out. I hate sounding like a flip flipper at times here concerning some shows. But damn, a lot of the time if I relisten to one over a few times it can change my view. Boots are sneaky that way, probably because they are so long and hard to disgust sometimes.
Edit: tried giving it it's third listen. While it's not my least favorite of the tour so far, ranks towards the middle with Philly 1, I can't get a feel for Worcester 2. I've noticed I have a hard time enjoying boots when the opening song is flawed, and towards the end of pendulum they come close to getting off time. I don't really care for the flow of the show, other side sounds rusty to me, my fathers son doesn't sound quite right, and I personally favor the more ambient Gone over this more rocking acoustic version. All in taste and preference of course. Not a bad boot, pretty tight but just not my favorite so far.

The energy and vibe of the show kicks off in high gear right off the bat opening with the killer combination of Go > Animal. It's like peanut butter and jelly and just a sick way to start off any show. Even though Ed mistakenly (or maybe on purpose) gets mixed up between the first and second chorus by extending the first chorus as if it's the second chorus, they start out on fire. This opening combination really sets the table for the rest of the show nicely, and a part of me thinks it's on purpose because I thought there were some dead spots during the first night in Manchester in my opinion. The energy keeps up with Hail Hail next, and then Ed first addresses the crowd stating how he already feels better tonight after "all the accountants and bankers showing up last night" and how it's a beautiful, rainy day in Manchester and reminds them of being back home in Seattle. A very high energy I Am Mine is played next, which is followed by Wishlist in a somewhat off place early on but works very well. The next sequence of Even Flow > Lukin > Not For You > Down is superb and showcases some major guitar work. Ed is much more chatty this night than the first night in Manchester between Even Flow and Lukin, he introduces Mike and states that Mike's middle name is Jemimah and his middle name is Jerome, but only one of those is actually true. During Down, before Mike goes into his solo, Ed provides some encouragement saying " Go Jemimah, go!". The closing 5 song sequence to the main set is excellent with Deep > Present Tense > Once > Save You > Better Man to close out the main set. Before Deep, Ed expounds and sheds some more light on the inspiration the song - telling a story about his first year living in Seattle and walking down the street and coming up on a cigarette lighter "falling" from the sky and looking up 4 stories to see a skinny, scabby looking dude sitting in a window sill with a tube around his arm and Ed realizing he would never take part in that as it was one of the most pathetic-looking things he had ever seen. One other item I noticed, is that if you didn't already appreciate Matt's drumming, listen closely to his drum fillers in Save You - tight tight tight and he sounds like a machine gun. Absolutely impressive.
The first encore starts off in a great way with Inside Job, without any extended intro, and Off He Goes. Just Breathe is next before they play the first and only performance to date of Hitchhiker. Overall, it's performed pretty well and it sounds much groovier than the studio version. Live, it reminds me of a surfer song or the intro song to the movie Pulp Fiction - it's just groovy as hell live. Rearviewmirror then closes out the first encore with Matt again sounding on fire on the drum kit.
The second encore starts off with the Wasted Reprise > Life Wasted tandem with a nice introduction for each individual band member and a thanks to the fans for being such a strong force in the band's lives from Ed during Wasted Reprise. Alive, Sonic Reducer, and Yellow Ledbetter with a Little Wing tag close out the show.
A very strong two-night stint in Manchester for the band to start off the 2012 European tour. Out of the two Manchester shows to start the tour, they both were very tight with very little rustiness - which is impressive for the opening of the tour, even by PJ standards. Very strong start to set the table for the rest of the tour. I did enjoy this boot/show a lot more than the first show in Manchester - I thought the sound quality and mixing were almost identical, but I thought the set list flowed much more coherently and the overall vibe and atmosphere was much better. Much more energy than the first night, especially from Ed and the crowd I feel.

A beautiful version of Release opens and Ed’s voice sounds quite strong. Following it, Small Town works well to get this VERY loud crowd singing. After a slow two song start, Animal sounds more blistering as a result and it’s one of my favorite versions. Ed’s voice sounds great with just right amount of rasp, unlike the last couple years where his singing on Animal sounds kind of strained and weak. On top of that, Matt’s drum fill at the end of the verse before the guitar solo is effective and adds excitement. He should do that more often in the song, but it’s rare that he does. His drumming on Given to Fly is also much better than his average take. It has a slight tribal feel and more reminiscent of what Jack Irons might do (listen specifically in the second verse for the added snare hits). The ending of GTF and the beginning of In Hiding work so well back to back. Ed should put those two songs together more frequently, and a double dose of Yield back to back is usually welcomed by most! If you cannot tell by this point, I fucking love this show and it won me over the first time I heard it. I have listened to it many times since. It has a great flow, vibe, loud crowd and a strong, almost error free performance by the entire band.
On paper, the setlist is nothing to gawk over but almost every song sounds so energized or so beautiful in case of the slower tunes. To illustrate this, listen to the few small kick drum hits Matt does before coming into Daughter. Small things like that can add a lot to these songs we hear so often. And although 2010 boots are not the most polished sounding of PJ’s boot discography, listen to how good Jeff’s bass sounds in Daughter. With my headphones in my ear, I can feel it. Throwing songs in like Even Flow between Daughter and Just Breathe keeps the show from sounding too down or slow, but the show does have more than the average amount of slow songs for whatever reason. On paper I thought it may make the show feel awkward, but it really works here for the reasons aforementioned. Dropping down the main set, Glorified G has a nice edgy groove to it that leads nicely into a rocking version of Why Go to close the main set. Encore 1 is on the shorter side and not as fulfilling as the main set, but still solid. A sorrowful version of The End opens after Ed praising the incredible audience for how active and loud they are. The Fixer is not the best version, but is still plenty energetic. Ed’s vocals sound nice on Wasted Reprise which always pairs nicely with Better Man (where Ed proclaims you “can’t find a better crowd”) to end the brief encore 1. Encore 2 is still short, but stronger overall. Smile-Once-Alive-Yellow Ledbetter is a great way to close a show. Smile sounds so pleasant and laid back. Once rocks hard here and transitions nicely into Alive. Ledbetter is a bittersweet goodbye to perfectly end this incredible gig.
One trivial critique is a natural echo or reverb in the recording from the location of the show. As a whole, it is not distracting and certainly not as annoying as the echo that appeared in the Perth 2006 bootleg. On some songs it really works effectively; the end of Unthought Known you can hear Ed’s vocals echo and it’s kind of cool. Other than that, the boot sounds fine. Sure, it’s a bit raw and not as slick as 2011-2012-2013, but the mixing here is effective. The crowd truly is almost mixed as loud as the band and with a crowd like this one, I appreciate that a lot. At times, if you let yourself sink into this one, it’s like you’re there in person. Lisbon 2010 is a boot that is in my top 20 for sure.

Excellent review of this boot and I almost forgot how good this boot actually is - it's been a while since I last listened to it and from I can remember, I also thought it was one of my favorite boots from 2010. This is also a perfect example of how the crowd mixed in with the boot can add a whole other dimension - especially a crowd as loud and energetic as this one. I've said it numerous times, but I really like to hear and "feel" the crowd in a boot. The 2013/2012/2011 are some of the best sound quality and mixes of the entire bootleg discography, but just wish they would mix up the crowd a tad bit more than they have. There are some excellent mixes from the 2000 and 2003 boots that certainly have the perfect blend of the guitars, Matt's drums, Ed's vocals, and the crowd as a whole to the point where you can "feel" the crowd - which in turn, lets you collectively "feel" the show a lot better.
