A big complaint that I have is that it's too short. I understand the Backspacer comparison in that regard but you gotta figure that they recorded more than eight tracks.
  • Led Zep 4 isn't even their best record. Name one band that has made as many consistent albums as Radiohead. I wish Pearl Jam were still as creative as they were 15 years ago. Backspacer and the avacado are weak sauce for Pearl Jam.

That's entirely subjective. I don't think Radiohead have been the most consistent band. I think a lot of people have learned to love their latter-day work, but let's not pretend that this is even remotely the same band that produced their earlier work. Gone are most of the melodies, gone are most of the guitars, leaving very little of their original identity. In fact the only real constant here is Thom Yorke's voice, which remains pretty incredible, but for many fans it wasn't his voice alone that attracted them to the band.

I understand their desire to experiment, but I almost hate Jonny Greenwood for being the mad-scientist/multi-instrumental genius that he is, because nobody plays guitar quite like him, and I REALLY miss that. Listening to the new record, I liked about half of it after the first listen, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed after over three years waiting for new material.

There is never any trouble finding Radiohead b-sides (for free). I will only complain about an album's running time if it is close to the half hour mark than this (only exception is Dylan's Nashville Skyline which is a 27 minute masterpiece).

I mean really what is the difference between 37 minutes and 45 minutes (which is pretty average)? If they felt this 37 minutes was the work that they should release, I will give them the benefit of the doubt. At this point in their career, they deserve it.

Not so much length-wise, I just wanted more songs to listen to.

    Still a good album though!

If you're referring to my comment that it probably won't be better than Led Zep's 4th, well, that is definitely not "writing off" the new Radiohead album. Probably no album in history has been better than Led Zep's 4th album. (apologies to Ten, OK Computer)

I do agree that it seems like some people are quickly judging this album.

No I wasn't referring to it not being Led Zep 4! Just generally surprised that people feel confident to declare it rubbish on day one. I am enjoying it, and will definitely be coming back to it in the coming weeks.

Anyway, it's hard enough convincing Pearl Jam fans to try and listen again to some Pearl Jam albums, without trying to get them to persevere with Radiohead as well! So I don't have a massive interest in trying to 'sell' this album.... It's clearly on the more 'experimental' side of the Radiohead output, or certainly the non-traditional guitar rock thing. I loved In Rainbows to bits for the amazing songs and singing - and I doubt I will be playing this one as much. But having got a lot from the Eraser over the years, I'm sure this one will find its place too.

Have been listening to Led Zep's Physical Graffitit again these past few days - now THAT is a guitar and drums album if ever there was one! A high point. I think some of the current bands (PJ included) should return to this and try and match it. But I digress!

Side 3: In the Light/Bron-yr-Aur/Down by the Seaside/Ten Years Gone

My favorite side of a record ever.

That is just a purely awesome rock & roll record. Could've dealt without Night Flight however.

I went through a whole 'Side 4 of Physical Graffiti' phase for a while - got well into it. I am thinking of resurrecting the physical graffiti thread while I am spinning this record again - probably makes more sense to wax on about Physical graffitti not in the Radiohead thread  I'm not sure a better rock album than Physical Graffitti exists..... Might try and find that thread again later! :D

  • no one should write off any album after only one listen.
i find that the albums that take the most listens for me to get into, are the ones that end up having the most replay value, and the albums that i like right away are usually the ones that i end up getting bored with after a few months.

Sure, Radiohead has strayed far from where they began, but all bands must evolve, otherwise they end up putting out the same stuff over and over and it gets stale. This band is too creative to keep writing the same shit over and over, and the greatness that is Radiohead is the fact that they can make many different types of music, whether it be rock or electronic, and they kill it every time.

the more people who write this band off as they continue down the electronic path, the easier it is for me to get tickets to their shows when the tour the US :D

Consistent? The bends and ok computer were awesome - no arguments... But to suggest kid A and amnesiac are consistent or brilliant is a bold statement. In my own subjective opinion they are horse shit records that people have had to try and like because they are radiohead.

    Consistency?

Ten, vs, vitalogy, no code, yield etc

Admittedly I'm a much bigger pearl jam fan

As for this new record I haven't heard it yet but from reading here the signs are not good. More electronica - such a shame. Maybe it's 'the opposite to what people keep saying, maybe they lost their creativity and the ability to make melodies and songs - hence this knocking out a beats laden album

  • Radiohead albums deserve multiple listens and after multiple listens of this I still stand by my original statement. 2 and a half decent tracks on it and thats all. Feels almost as some of this material was a work in progress. Kind of like a well polished demos that the band would later on pull certain elements from to create something better. And thats listening to it through my 'jazz ears'

I would take amnesiac over this. Still, can't win them all eh?
  • I hated Amnesiac at first, but after many listens, it has become my all time favorite Radiohead album. Im not sayin i dont have any love for OK Computer and The Bends. They're classics, for sure, and you could put either on and any time and I'd listen to them thru and think they're still great. But Amnesiac gets the most play for me. If you haven't witnessed Pyramid Song live, i feel sorry for you.

I think people just need to listen to a new album with an open mind. Dont listen to a new album and constantly compare to previous works, or hope it sounds like, or think it sounds like a previous album by the band. Each album is its own, and needs to be thought of as such.

Fair enough then. It seems to be picking up some pretty decent reviews out in the big wide world. Like I said above though, I don't really have an interest in peddling radiohead here - but I have been enjoying it - though I doubt it will win a place in my heart like In Rainbows did, mainly because of the style.

Yup completley agree and I think it takes about 6 - 12 months to truly see where you stand with an album. Sometimes you really love something at first but few months down the line you get bored or you move on and the same can be said for disliking an album. Sometimes you come back to it after a long period of time and you hear something you didn't first time around.

Well you like it or you don't, nothing anybody here says will change anyone's opinion. It's just nice to hear why people like / dislike it. Endurance is the test of a great album. Everything we say here is just a first opinion, ressurect this thread a few months down the line and see where we all stand then, my opinion may change as it has done before.

It's not that I couldn't like the latter day stuff - I can enjoy it for what it is, but it's just not the same band that made those earlier records. It literally is like two different bands entirely, but with the same singer.

Oh man - what an exciting time - discovering Led Zep was probably the coolest summer of my life! Other music doesn't sound the same ever again. Every album is spectacular. Enjoy youngster!

Utterly amazing - I've had this on repeat all day and I've totally fallen in love with it. Good Morning Mr Magpie, Little By Little and Codex are especially brilliant.
