The discussion about criticizing something only if you can do what someone else does is moronic. It's an opinion and nothing else. If you don't like something you are more than entitled to say you don't like it. Be ready to explain that to other people but you're more than within reason to not like something even if you can't do what they do. That argument that only people who can do these things can complain is ridiculous.

That being said I really like the space-opera that Radiohead does now. The new album does take sometime but it shouldn't be a huge effort to force yourself to like it.

Have you ever directed a movie?

    Yes.

i just noticed you said 'yes' to this... I should have said that incestuous porn doesnt count. ;)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

  • The album is great not because it's Radiohead but because the music is really interesting and for lack of a better word, good.

Of course the chances are that you wouldn't have even heard it if they were a new band. Like it or not, Radiohead have been riding on the success of their earlier records for a long time now.

That's obvious and pretty much goes without saying...but it's also irrelevant because it's not the reality, the reality is Radiohead is not a new band. In addition, I feel Hail to the Thief is as good as anything they've put out and that certainly is not an early record of theirs.

Well the subconscious mind is a funny thing, could it possibly be that some people have it so ingrained in their head that Radiohead are so amazing, that they would find something they like in ANYTHING they ever produced? I'm inclined to think that in some cases that could be true.

Oh, and talking about things being irrelevant, your personal view on Hail To The Thief has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Radiohead have only been afforded the opportunity to make far less accessible records based on the success of their far more accessible earlier records.

So just to sum up this thread: the people who don't like this album need to force themselves to listen to it at least twenty more times before they can form an opinion, and the people who do like this album are only blinded by their fanboyism.

This is good guys, let's keep this up.

you ever tried talking to people on the porch about pearl jam and criticizing an album PJ has made? Its the same thing. People here think every single thing PJ has ever done is great. Ive criticized the price of tickets in the past and was crucified for it. Criticized the fact they didnt maximize their profit for backspacer by doing a better job with promotion (i wanted them to make more money off it), yet was crucified for that too.

The porch is no different from atease or mortigi tempi
  • Haha. I've said before and I'll say it again. Everything on here is really just opinion. Your opinion, my opinion, etc. No one is really right or wrong, it just is. It's whatever you think. If you like it, great. If not, don't listen. It's that simple. Not liking it is no reason to shit all over the people that do though. When someone starts a thread in Other Music about a band that I don't care for, I don't go in the thread posting negative comments, I keep it to myself. Have a great day everyone!

for reals! I've been reading this thread but keeping my posts to a minimum.

seems that some of the people who don't like the album are angry at the people who do.
    I dont understand that
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
  • chuck klosterman said it best, about 4 or 5 hours after the album came out: im sure radiohead are really disappointed by all the reviews. they make music to be heard once, at 920 in the morning, on your laptop.

    sums it up for me.

  • Okay. I am in no way a Radiohead fanboy but I do like them. I didn't care too much for the electronic aspect of their music.

That being said, when I listened to this album for the first time, I skipped a few tracks after the first 30 seconds. About the third time through, I listened to all the songs without skipping any of them and was blown away.

I have heard comments about the album does not have enough guitar or bass or even drums(of which there is a plethora). IMO, the bass playing on the album is some of the best on any album. The instruments are sparse but it has just enough to complement each other. I still like In Rainbows better but I cannot wait to see how the songs translate in a live setting.

    That is all.

But the vast majority of these people do like Radiohead.

    I dont understand that

I think you've misunderstood - people are angry because they are being told by certain people on here that if they don't like it that they haven't tried hard enough to 'get it'.

Same with some Pearl Jam fans. I'm not one of those - I'll happily talk about the fact I think Riot Act is a weak album by PJ's standards, lacking in melody and memorable songs, obviously it has some stand out moments, but in general it doesn't do a lot for me.

I don't really fit in either camp in terms of King Of Limbs either, I like it for what it is, an ambient chill-out kind of record, but for me it's far from classic Radiohead.

You've still not written a book, directed a movie or built your own car yet have you?

anyway, I DO like Radiohead... have done since Pablo Honey and no one is shitting on people for liking this album, actually it's people who love this album that are shitting on us... claiming we cannot 'comprehend' it.. that it is too layered... I cannot comprehend the size of the Universe, but an album?

Actually, since you insist on bringing it up repeatedly, I have in fact written a book, directed a movie and built my own car. Seriously, they were all for school projects at one time or another throughout my academic career.

You know what the funny thing is? I bet the people who don't like TKoL probably listen to it more than the people who actually DO like it! Kinda like the movie Private Parts about Howard Stern during that one scene where it is revealed that the people who can't stand Stern actually listen more often and for longer periods of time than Stern fans!
