This made me think of the polar opposite which was a news story in the UK today when a TV presenter was asked what he would do if one of his children bought home a same sex partner (and yes it does say something that this should still be news)

His response:

At least not exclusively. Some friends have biological children and some adopt. The grandparents of each love them equally as much.

wouldnt bother me one bit if one of my 2 kids were to be gay... but i would never consider myself 'lucky enough' for one of them to be gay... just seemed an odd thing for Pandora to say to Jo.

Being gay isn't really about sex...it's about someone's identity. There are gay men who have never had sex with another man...and there are straight men who have. Sexuality is really only a piece of it. There really is nothing you can do to ensure your children grow up heterosexual. Either they are or they aren't. What you can ensure is that they will feel shame about it and hide it, however. I agree that sex has been devalued in many, many ways...but wasn't your initial post about having your pornos ruined? Color me confused. :?

If you visit New Orleans during Mardi Gras, I think you'll see one. I don't identify with the women there who earn beads when they respond to people yelling "Show your tits!" I'm straight and I've been married 32 years to the same man. But I received my nickname of Princess when I worked at an AIDS organization for 5 years. I was told by my gay co-workers that they considered me "family" because I fit in so well. I was proud that the people I worked with held me in that kind of regard and it still means a lot to me.

I've also marched in a gay pride parade, as a volunteer for the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. The parade was about as outrageous as a 4th of July celebration. Which is to say it wasn't.

I'm not one for bumper stickers but if somebody wants to decorate their car with them, so what? And if you see the car in traffic, does that mean the driver is gay just because the car is plastered with rainbows? Suppose he borrowed it from a friend or co-worker? Suppose he just bought it? And whose business is it, anyway?

I'm sure, with the exception of those that think homosexuality can be avoided by sitting your kids down in front of Die Hard, five times a week, we would all agree that we would dearly love to live in a world where your orientation was completely irrelevant to the wider world, yes?

That being said, at what point in progress does pinning so much emphasis on the way you swing that you define yourself by it become counter-productive? Genuine question. At some point, in the not too far distant future perhaps, will constant public announcements that you're gay to people that probably don't care, whether they come in the form of car stickers, or disingenous effeminate mincing start retarding the progress we've already made? Or is it already happening?
