Would not paying the registration really mean it's not free? What I mean is you still have to pay something. Where as in Scotland it sounds totally free till you start working and you pay taxes.

I benefited from the Scottish system ... don't know how much it has changed since I went but ... my fees were paid, I got a grant for living expenses (based on how much my parents earned) and also had all my daily travel to and from university paid for as well as three trips home per year.

They also paid half my fees and a similar grant and travel package for my one year post graduate diploma. All of my study was done in England but as a Scottish student I still qualified ;)

did this guy you know sell guns at a private show?

also, what do you mean "the feds don't mess around"

isn't it the feds that allow this

"Private gun show dealers are exempt from federal law requiring background checks of customers"

I think Godfather is referring to the section of the article where gun dealers are stilling selling to people who they know will not pass background checks.

    specifically this part
But in the other two videos, the sales were illegal because the investigators told the vendors they probably would be unable to pass a background check. Under federal law, the vendors should have stopped the sales and did not, he said.

Instead, the dealers on the videos replied that background checks would not be necessary to buy the guns.

    although i could be wrong.

    im confused, again

"Private gun show dealers are exempt from federal law requiring background checks of customers"

    and

"But in the other two videos, the sales were illegal because the investigators told the vendors they probably would be unable to pass a background check. Under federal law, the vendors should have stopped the sales and did not, he said."

    which one is it?

i can only presume that you do not have to do background checks... but if the purchaser tells you that he wouldn't pass background checks then the vendor is legally obliged to not sell it knowing that the purchaser is not entitled to own one?

    just guessing...

Here is a perfect example where slightly stricter gun laws might have saved the lives of two teenagers:

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/02/01/flo ... 1&iref=NS1
Schenecker had initially planned what she called the "massacre" -- killing the children and then herself, McElroy said on Monday -- for January 22, but she put it off after learning there would be a three-day check before she could buy a gun.

Police later found writings in the house, thought to be from Schenecker, in which she spelled out her intentions in detail.

"There are definitely indications that she planned this," McElroy said. "(The writing) was devoid of emotion."

Police opened, and then dropped, an investigation of physical abuse involving Schenecker against her teen daughter, closing the case weeks before the killings.

"Our belief was that she didn't snap -- she planned this," McElroy told HLN's Vinnie Politan on Monday.

In November, police opened a child abuse investigation into allegations Schenecker had abused Calyx, according to a report from the Tampa Police.

This crazy lady actually put off buying a gun (temporarily) because she found out she had to wait 3 days.
She seems like she was on the verge of getting in trouble with child services. If the waiting period to buy a gun was a month or two, maybe they would've figured out she was crazy in the meantime. if there was just an overlap in the authorities investigating her and the time it took to get a gun.. two kids might still be alive.

What a complete and utter misunderstanding of the reasons some folks support the 2nd amendment. There are too many threads with this kind of nonsensical, unfounded rhetoric going on for me to attempt another reply here.

I suspect you own a gun or 2?
Your 2nd amendment is old and archaic and really needs a major overhaul.
If you find that to be unsensical and unfounded rhetoric then that's your problem.

Ah, one of my favorite interweb argumentating devices:

person 1: <gross exaggeration of the situation or a complete fabrication of the reasoning for something>
    person 2: <calls out person 1>
person 1: <completely restates their initial perspective and then attempts to apply person 2's response to their new statement instead of the initial one>

    Classic.

EXACTLY! I mean America apparently is in love with its guns ability to collect guns emthuistically. Well collect all the guns you want but ban the ammo. I can see why Chris Rock said just charge 5k for each bullet we may think twice about shooting a gun.

What are the reasons people support the 2nd Amendment?

I think I am on everyone's ignore list. I have posted the three major reasons I have heard for the 2nd ammendment remaining as is:

    1. The government is going to go tyrannical the moment the citizens give up their guns.

    2. Other people with guns are going to get you so you need guns to get them before they get you.

    3. Guns are fun.

And have heard this one as well which might stand as a 4th reason:

    4. Quit telling me what to do.

    * Seriously... what am I missing here? Are these really the reasons?

    sorry , couldnt resist.

I havent heard them quite THAT way, but I could see how they could be construed that way.

I think the only best reason I dont have one is I dont trust myself with that type of power.

  • I guess I frame the 'reasons' in tongue-in-cheek fashion: warranting no response.

But, if you think about it... they aren't far from the exact truth. Fear and paranoia have people abandon common sense and ignore logic and facts. The overwhelming statistics demand action... yet some don't see that.
