I smoke and people bitch about secondhand smoke. I dont drive a car yet i have to inhale gas fumes from your car. i walk to work yet i have to inhale fumes from cabs and buses. I will make a deal with everyone that bitches about smokers. I will only smoke in my house if u stop driving and we do away with public transportation. All these people claim they have the right to breathe clean air but there is nothing in the bill of rights about about the right to breathe clean air.

I don't smoke AND I walk to work. Therefore I am qualified to say

Smoking is your habit and your life choice. Should you choose to smoke, don't inflict the toxic smoke on others.

  • I smoke, and I drive to work, I am fed up of people breathing my secondary smoke, but not chipping in to buy the cigarettes. ;)

There is nothing in the constitution about the government providing healthcare, yet they rammed that down our throats. I think people do have a right to not be inconvenienced by your poor decisions. It's not just air quality, it's that smokers feel that they can dispose of their butts anywhere they please.

Agreed, Driving is essential to our way of life, smoking is not. Car fumes are not nearly as bad as Cigarette smoke; I'm talking orders of magnitude of difference. Also many cities have buses that run on CNG. Plus it's not like there are exhaust pipes right by your face on the sidewalk. I've never come home from a bar and smelled like car fumes.

hmmmm.... what until they take away your rights....never applaud moves like this by our government.
I am a nonsmoker but understand peoples rights to basic freedoms. Smoking outside on the street should be one of them!

Are you for or against that and how does that relate to smoking? I'm missing the correlation. Drinking on the street is allowed in a few cities for entertainment venue areas which makes for a fun day out and I'm sure you can smoke too ;)
The thing is I can see banning cig smoke in enclosed areas but that is ridiculous outside on the street.
What that is doing is making smokers feel like 2nd class citizens.
Thats wrong... next it will be other health issues... overweight people ... those with illness, etc.
It's going to far and it's a freedom taken away from people for no good reason except a power trip and a paranoia on at the part of some nonsmokers. And in some cases they just don't want to see it cause they think they are better than that!
All it really does is cause friction between people and it is another form of judging others who are not like us or are doing something we wouldn't do.
Secondhand smoke is a real danger if you live or work with it...confined daily...is a threat if you grew up with it like many in my era. Driving in the car when you couldn't see out the windows type secondhand smoke!
Not an occasional wiff out on the street....please

one thing I just wanna add, I find it very hypocritical all the outroar their was in this state about banning smoking in bars.. So let me get this straight, people are worried about the second hand smoke, but not about the alcohol entering their bodies and affecting their liver? granted I see the point in a small hole in the wall bar with poor ventilation, but seriously, if you're gonna complain that much about second hand smoke while being outdoors, then you should lock yourself in a plastic bubble, avoid the second hand smoke, CFCs, Carbon Monoxide, not to mention the sun with the risk of skin cancer these days, and be fed a protein shake without any preservatives, artificial flavors or colors, and fillers
I try to eat organic, I dont shove my views down others throats, but I do smoke, AND I do not throw my butts out of car windows or in the street, i kill the cherry and either hold onto it till i get to a garbage can, or put it in the outdoor/car ashtrays
btw, this is in no way directed towards anyone here who doesnt like smoking, just making a statement about those who criticize it but do other things to pollute the enviroment

damn dirtymike, i probably eat less organic than you, but i agree with every word you wrote. i live in the middle of (what used to be) tobacco country. five years ago mcdonalds had smoking areas, but now you cannot smoke in a pool room and at the one we used to frequent you cannot take your drink outside.
    go figure

At the university health sciences center where I work, smoking is banned inside and outside. They have a right to make their campus smoke-free and an obligation to protect their patients. Plus it's congruent with their mission.

I used to be a smoker. I still do occasionally (when really loaded!). But never, EVER, would I argue that it's my RIGHT to pollute everyone else's air. It's fucking disgusting, and if it bothers someone, I'd move. Inside OR out.

  • I can guarantee you, if it didn't make our respective governments so much fuckin' money (and subsequently, organized crime on the black market), with the amount it (directory or indirectly) costs the health care industry, you'd bet it would be outlawed.

yes it would. we have a right to find our own sense, that is what we are doing here, living our own lessons on this journey.
funny how the right to die is ok but then is also not ok I guess ???

love going to the pub and not comin home smelling like a ashtray. outsides a different story.
feel for those who smoke. they wont ban it as they make too much money in tax so all they do is make it harder on the poor punter.

i don't think it's as black and white are you are saying here. i disagree the others have no infringment on you whatsoever.

if someone drinks and jumps in their car and drives they can kill you. it happens every single day. even though you have a right to not be killed by an idiot, it can still happen.

if a morbidly obese person wants to eat macdonalds and other crap till they burst well that's ok too. that's their right. but don't forget those people are taking up hospital beds, visiting doctors, calling on emergency services etc and that puts you next in line. you have to wait your turn and if the macca loving person gets seen to before you and you are in need of emergency treatment then you just need to wait and there is nothing you can do. what those people do in their lives can impact on you one way or another.
