ILYA KOVALCHUCK STILL A DEVIL!!!!!

So why, tell me, post in a thread about the Devils and Ilya??
This is THE marquee free agent signing of the off-season, and he signed a huge, unconventional contract...the whole hockey world has an opinion on this - I dont think its really trolling for Devil-haters to comment.
.I would not put my cup dreams on the shoulders of this guy, no way. Alexi Yashin anyone? have fun getting rid of him with this contract, if/when he does tank.
speaking of yashin
The islanders recently contacted him to play for the team again. I guess they figured might as well have him on our team since where paying him till 2015.
from what i understand, the islanders are not close to the base cap money. they need to spend some more money or face a strict penalty.0 -

I understand the ramifications of having such a long contract and yes he can't be expected to produce throughout his contract. I'm I pinning all my hopes on this guy? No, it's not just one person who makes a difference it's the combine lines. Put him with Parise, Langy, and Zubrus and you've got a great line.
so 4 forwards on the 1 line???i post on the board of a band that doesn't exsist anymore .......i need my head examined.......0 -

I seriously don't like signing guys to big contracts for any more than three years. I know it makes it hard to retain, or lure away the big names...but it's just too risky unless you have a sure-fire winner. There are maybe five or six guys in the league I'd sign for five years or more, and Kovy isn't one of them.
I've said it a million times, the Oilers cup run in 06 was the worst thing that could have happened to our team...we signed a bunch of guys that over-achieved in ONE post-season to long-term, big number deals, and got stuck with them for a looooong time after their game came back to earth. I just don't get the logic behind the Kovalchuck deal - esp with all the precedents set by either disappearing or early-to-retire Russians.
This kovy deal will hurt them when it comes time for zach p contract. The devils aren't great in resigning their own players. Gomez and paul martin come to mind.Post edited by Gary Carter onRon: I just don't feel like going out tonight

I agree with you on all these points. how many more years before the islanders move to Brooklyn again?0 -

You know we have to improve our odds.
Have Parise, Kovalchuk and Langs<a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v44/brother123/?action=view¤t=thewh0.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/brother123/thewh0.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>0 -

They either move to queens where the empty junkyard is next to citi field and partner with the mets or stay where they are and partner with the Shinnecock tribe with their casino idea.Post edited by Gary Carter onRon: I just don't feel like going out tonight

It's interesting, Kovy I guess gets second line...
That is a lot for a second left winger...0 -
a man can dream right?
I'd like this idea: Zubrus, Elias, and Kovalchuk. You've got a vet and a super star and solid player<a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v44/brother123/?action=view¤t=thewh0.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/brother123/thewh0.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>0 -

its brilliant if you think about it. people used to complain that players don't stay with one team anymore but if this trend continues than they will.
He's not going to be playing for the next 17 years. In Lou we trust. He knows exactly what he's doing and has thought this through every which way. We all know Kovie is more than willing to play in the KHL - so this is almost NO gamble for Loulou. The precedent has been set that you can "lend" a player under contract to the K and it not count against the Cap, so if he **** the bed, he can always just go home and Lou can have a do-over.
Kovachoo isn't playing 17 more years for sure, but his Cap hit doesn't count once he retires as he isn't old enough for that yet. And this way, they don't have as huge a Cap hit. Not a terrible move for the Devils, in my opinion."If you're not confused, you're not paying attention."
"Rise above principal and do what's right."0 -
the NHL has rejected kovalchuk's ridiculous contract on grounds that the devils were trying to manipulate the salary cap by making it 17 years. good for you, NHL. you're doing something right for once.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=328025Stunned by my own reflection, it's looking back sees me too clearly and I swore I'd never go there again. Not unlike a friend that politely drags you down.0
