I heard a boot that had Footsteps on it when I was 14 or 15 and I was instantly hooked. Never looked back music wise, Pearl Jam has been there every step of my life.
much more music was airing tb2000 one night in 2002 and i just happened to turn it on. before then, i was one of those "yeah, pearl jam WAS good". after i saw the even flow performance, i was blown away by how good they were live. they didn't rely on stage gimmicks.. it was just 5 guys playing music. nothing to hide. over the next few months, i purchased all their cd's and dvd's (i was still in hs so i couldn't afford to by them all at once lol) and i never looked back
Jeremy on the radio blasting from someone's speakers up in the window from my dorm at college way back in the early 90's when Jeremy was getting all kinds of air play.
Been hooked since.
Black absolutely no doubt about it sealed the deal.
Evenflow.. I only knew the song Alive at the time and my friend talked me into buying Ten back in '93.. I heard Evenflow for the first time on CD and have been hooked since.

A few years ago I wanted to get into some different music so I bought RVM Greatest hits because Id always liked "Alive" but didnt know much about PJ.
The first two songs on disc 2 "Black"and "Breath" just blew me away....escpecially BLACK.
I think it was mainly the feeling and words that went into Black that got me hooked. Eddies "Oooh, hoo" was so raw and emotional I couldnt stop listening to it. It kind of annoys me that he hums it nowadays ...mmm,mmm.
Also the line " And now my bitter hands, cradle broken glass of what was everything" How poetic is that?!?
I went out and bought every studio album after that and all the bootlegs and DVDs I could find. I now have over 2000 PJ/EV songs on my Ipod and never get tired of listening to them.
Betterman/Save it for Later from State College bootleg got me hooked. Then Eddie and Mike did Masters of War at the Bob Dylan tribute and I was hooked for good.
Always have been a fan since seeing them live for first time, Alive & Black were my two favorite songs, but first time I heard Yellow Ledbetter, I was a lifer!

My sister first bought the Ten cassette (yes cassette ) when the Alive single came out. We used to share my mom's car driving it around and she would ALWAYS play it. When I finally heard Release I was hooked!

Dating myself, but I was just out of college when Ten came out, liked Evenflow and Jeremy a lot but when I picked up the CD and heard Porch and Why Go I became an instant fan. Unfortunately, I didn't think to join the fan club until about 4 years later

Alive ... I was going through a bad stage in life and was experiencing extreme insomnia.I used to watch t.v into the early morning.
I was watching a music show called The Power Hour. The V.J. introduced new release video's ... Alive was the first one to come on ... I was mesmerised then realised I was crying.
The next day I went looking for the single,no store had heard of Pearl Jam.An assistant in an independent music store offered to keep a look out for it and call me if it came in.
I got a call two weeks later ... I carried that single around for a month and played it to as many people as possible.
A small few got it .. most didn't .. Alive was the catalyst for me to get my self functioning again.

I'd have to say Alive. Saw them perfrom Alive and Porch on SNL. Stunned and amazed doesn't describe it. Then I caught Unplugged on MTV. Jammer for life ever since.
I bought Ten in '08 (yes, I'm young) just because I remembered hearing the name Peal Jam when I was really, really little. I loved it and used to listen to it while I did my homework (except I always skipped Black, I know.) Even though I liked Ten a lot, it was when I heard Daughter on the radio I decided to buy some...excuse me..all of their stuff.

Spin the Black Circle
I did not like "Jeremy" for many years; it was so overplayed where I was living (Bay Area) that it was driving me crazy. I also preferred Nirvana at the time.
I was very impressed by STBC -- so much energy and so different from Jeremy; I had to respect a band that could put out a song that sounded so different from the song that made them huge. I also really liked Betterman (I'm a girl, what can I say?).
We moved to Seattle in '95, and of course PJ was everywhere. I would call us casual fans during this time -- did not need to work too hard to find PJ on the radio, LOL. We got into the band more after we left Seattle ( :( :( ) , since we missed the city so much. Like the poster above, I would say that Live at the Garden pulled us in hook, line and sinker.
For what it's worth, I like Jeremy much more now -- very solid song.
