I get technology advancements.  Quality control is better.  Durability is better.  But at the pro level these advancements at some point led to obsoletion of golf courses for the pro game, and sucked the creativity out of the pro game.   The pro game is a putting contest each week.

The pros have always played different equipment than 95% of amateurs. 95% of amateurs would quit if they played blades.  They use Game Improvement irons.  So yes, let's tighten the margin of error on pro clubs and pro golf balls.

A one handed football catch is cool, but I know the glove helps and so it isn't as impressive to me.  They can say it doesn't, but every receiver wears them for a reason.   PGA Tour Pros bomb drives because they know the equipment today will cover their mishits (albeit small margins of error) that weren't covered up 10 years ago.  Not much really impresses me watching the PGA tour.   It comes down to who has the hot hand putting.
I think they need to toughen up the course conditions. Make them all like the US Open.

I don’t know how you tighten up the equipment. I play blades and it would piss me off if they changed the design. I would hate to be forced to hit GI irons again. They are hot and look like boards at address.

I guess maybe there could be “pro” drivers that are shorter or less forgiving. But I doubt that happens.

Yeah, I think there would be changes to the ball and driver/woods for the pros.  Perhaps shorten courses and make them more difficult.

Equipment is a huge problem. We have 2 guys shooting close to -30 through 3 rounds of a pro golf tournament.

    It’s making courses irrelevant.

Look at pebble. It’s only a US open venue because it’s pebble.

Change equipment for pros solves the problem. Amateurs need help . Pros do not.

I dont know what to make of it.  Can’t see the players caring that much.  Another way to line their pockets.

i want one of those Simulators though.

    It's got potential. Some issues:

The lag time time between the ball hitting the screen is a bit too long.
The crowd seemed not into it too much...seemed too corporate.
The commentating on the actual game was minimal for some strange reason.
They were on an enormous simulator and they didn't even tell us how far they hit it?
They barely mentioned the differences on the green for each hole.
The graphics showing what hole they're on, shot clock, score, etc etc etc were tough to locate.

Being a blowout didn't help either.

Enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.  The fast pace definitely helps.  Agree with Juggler on the distance thing....how on earth are they not showing how far the shots are going?  Especially the drives.  The shitty little simulator place I go to shows how far the ball is going as it's in the air!!  Definitely some kinks to work out but it has good potential.  What else am I going to watch on Monday/Tuesday nights now that regular season football is done?

Normally when we watch the PGA Tour we don't see shots of the players that are having a bad week.  Will be interesting to watch players that just don't have it that night (although with this group that will probably be minimal due to having perfect conditions).

I think the most interesting golf right now is from the YouTubers.  They can splice their videos and be quick like TGL, but still be outside as not live.  They hit bad shots like we do.  They have much better commentary than most pros do.  TGL is close to that with the pacing and commentary.  TGL will get better I would think as they figure out their product better.

But TGL will have the same problem that makes the PGA Tour so dull.  Driver, wedge.  Driver, wedge. Driver, wedge.

Not really. 9 of their holes are over 600 yards.

Rickie sure didn’t have it last night.

I mean, bomb and gouge isn’t as big of an issue when you’re watching on a simulator with tricked up holes to begin with, but they were coming up really short last night on a few holes

Not good.  They don't care at all.   They have 50M in the bank at a minimum.  They can't possibly give one crap about winning TGL.

I tuned in right before that and was laughing my ass off. Not sure why Kisner is even playing but he def provides some entertainment.

Hope to see a closer match next week. Also---they need to start at a regular time. I was assuming it would 9 like it was last week...

They know they need the players to talk and try to be lighthearted.  It is a balance though, because the last 30 minutes that I saw was just grown men giggling and not giving one shit about the shots they were hitting.  Except for Theegala and his dad who treated it like the US Open when he hit a good shot.

last night the balance was skewed further in the silly direction than the competitive side.

I don’t know of any sports on ESPN that have a silly nature to them.   People will stop tuning in if the players don’t care.

It was 9-1 and, I believe, the match was already over by that point...they just finish out the holes because that affects playoff tiebreakers or something.

Be nice to have a competitive match one of these weeks...

I get it, but the giggling means they didn’t care about losing 9-1.  Perhaps Tiger was seething on the inside.

But maybe after a few seasons where it is competitive, people will start to care more.   I think the simulator would make it tough for a pro to really care as they know what the shape should be, how far the ball should fly, and what the ball should do when it lands.  The simulator likely is pretty far from reality even at the advanced state it is at now.

Yeah....but again, it's a Tuesday night in January...it's not The Masters, right?

I think of this the same way I think of those TNT Matches. Basically exhibition golf during the off season. More entertainment than anything else.

Agree they don’t seem to care about winning. Wasn’t this supposed to be a perk for the top players to stay with the PGA?

they do care about being on ESPN in prime time. They do care about having stars in the crowd. They need to figure out a way to make the matches competitive, for a team behind on the last few holes to have a chance to catch up. The two so far have been over with an hour to go in the telecast. It’s not an issue for match play as the match ends once the win is clinched.

The hammer seems to help a team establish a bigger lead, once they get the lead, they hold the hammer.
