i admit though.....if ed had slagged hindu or muslim bands, there would be no topic discussed.

for the record and thread integrity....i do not enjoy christian music, but gospel bluegrass is entertaining.
the difference is though, he would NOT slag hindu or muslim bands :o EVER! Because that wouldn't be nice!

I LOVE gospel music... gospel bluegrass? That sounds interesting :)

I do it on instinct... I try not to because I suppose saying it everytime loses its meaning anyway... but my mind just doesnt listen and the sound of a sneeze just lets it out of my mouth without the slightest chance to think about it.

same dif. the sentiment is the same. :)

in this day and age it's really just seen as the polite thing to say if someone sneezes.i don't think too many people see it as a "religious" saying.

Okay, if we go with the Christian point of no absolute knowledge... can you concede that science allows us to understand our world to a greater extent than would be possible if we stopped questioning things? That maybe part of whatever plan your creator had for us included bettering ourselves with our thirst for knowledge?:)

yes of course I do. I just said, thinking that science can answer the big questians oneday, is false. I trust science, when I drive my car, or use my laptop, for example. But I would never overrate it in a way, that I let it interfer with my spiritual life. this a whole other thing, and I think it is quite obvious that there is more than humans can perceive.

    Funny... I didn't remember asking a question.

I also did not say that attacking the big bang theory is ridiculous- I actually said that if you call the theory ridiculous without understanding the theory, or the evidence that supports it, then you are just giving an uneducated opinion. Unless you can think of another name for expresing something's worth without actually understanding it?

And on that topic of understanding it, let's clear up a few of your misconceptions:

The big bang does not attempt to explain how spacetime, or the matter contained within it began expanding. Instead the theory explains occurences after the planck epoch, by which stage the expansion had already occured. So please don't attack a theory for not explaining something that it is not meant to explain.

And do you expect myself, or any other like minded person to be surprised that the theory is still being discussed? I am sure that even the president of the big bang fan club would be willing to admit that the theory is far from perfect. Nobody claims that, so of course it is still being discussed.

A scientific theory or model is only as good as its ability to explain observations. The big bang theory originated from Edwin Hubble's observations that light from galaxies is red shifted, and thus the objects are moving away from us. And that the further away an object is, the faster it is moving. This is exactly what happens in an explosion- the outer objects move faster than the inner objects.

And the big bang theory made predictions, which allowed scientists to test how accurate a picture of the universe it presented. Specifically, it predicted ratios of different types of helium, lithium and deuterium to hydrogen. The relative abundances of these elemets agree with the predictions of the theory.

The big bang also predicted 'background radiation' of a specific temperature coming from all parts of the sky. Not only has this radiation been detected, and not only was the temperature of the radiation almost exactly what the theory predicted, and not only have the density fluctuations been detected that were also predicted, but you can watch it when you turn on your tv (approx. 25% of static on tv is background radiation from the big bang).

So please don't say that, 'The data is very limitited, astronomy is very very limited. We almost know nothing about the universe'. Be critical of the theory by all means, but don't do that and in the same paragraph demonstrate that you actually don't understand the very thing you are denouncing.

Believe what you want- just don't butcher the science.

Most of this is BS, and I cant be bothered going into detail now. Just ask : how huge is the universe. And then ask: How much of that can we observe now. The answer you get is very very humbling. It all has to do with Hybris. The old greeks knew all about it. Read Daedalus and Icarus.

daedalus and icarus was more about knowing where your place in things is and not getting above yourself. oh and that whole listen to your father thing.

we dont know how big the universe is. conversely we dont know how small it is. when ti really coems down to it... man knows nothing. he speculates about things he can not prove beyond a reasonable doubt... thats all.

  • I' a fan of PJ, BUT,,,,I am not the typical fan I guess. If Vedder says something don' t agree with, I WILL call him to the carpet, and I think ole Vedder needs to pick on MORE IMPORTANT CRAP than "Christian Bands". We have a government who believes that torture is acceptible, and a society that thinks it's ok to "Fleece" the common man, and Eddie Vedder decides the best he can do is to diss Christian rock bands?

Mr. Vedder, we have an important election at hand this year, maybe you have heard of it,,,,the "PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES" thingy???

I just think that picking on somthing like "christian rock bands", when so much is at stake this year is trivial, a little mean spirited, and foolish.

I might get some mean spirited posts sent my way over this but I don' t care, I'M PISSED MR. VEDDER!
I don't agree with much of what you said, but you bring up an interesting thought.

My guess is that Ed is so upset with religion because he is far more concerned with the "more important crap" like war, elections, and torture. And he sees our current professed religious, christian, and "compassionate conservative" President and his cronies, who have gone out of their way to piss on human rights and bring death and destruction to a already volatile region of the world. More importantly, he was elected on the backs of the religious right and is continually supported by the religious sheep who think his chrstianity is the most important leadership quality.

He is probably so frustrated with the utter hypocrisy and belligerence of the current administration and the religious right, that he blames religion and is critical of religious people--which is a pretty fair and somewhat accurate critique.

And in my opinion, all christians should be ashamed of the hypocrisy of Bush and the things he has done under the guise and cloak of chistianity—and I know there are many who are.

Just incredibly funny that the people who put Ed in a position of influence, wealth, and power, are no more intelligent or free thinking than the people who elected and support Bush.

man knows nothing. ok, i can live withn that. quantum mechanics found that out, too, in a way. So what do you do if you know you know nothing. At least you should be open to spirituality, IMO

that's bullshit dude, obviously if the bless you comes from a stranger it is an act of respect/courtesy. then you ignore them and look like an ignorant ass IMO.

that would be like a woman who doesn't believe in chivalry and you hold the door open for her and she walks past without a thank you.would you call her a bitch and walk away? or spend time contemplating what her problem was and the reasons for her actions? (or lack of)

same dif. the sentiment is the same. :)

no it's not. it's the same fuking thing as 'cazoontite', or however it's spelled. would that offend you too? do you get offended if someone holds the door open for you too?

for me it's a figure of speech that i don't take literally and if someone else does, that's their problem. regardless of whatever history there is behind the phrase.

So at the LA 1 show, Ed was talking about this commercial he saw for a Christian Rock album, and then went on to criticize through song how they all look the same, act the same, can't think for themselves and are all sheep. Which I thought was somewhat comical.

But in retrospect it was certainly more ironic than anything.

The fact that Ed was pontificating this to the obnoxious chick to my right who kept yelling how much she loves and worships Ed, how sexy he was, telling her friend about the time she touched him, laughing at jokes that weren't really jokes, woohoo-ing and clapping things that didn't warrant applause, and shouting fuck yeah! before Ed was halfway through a sentence.

And then there was the couple to my left, overly consumed with what Ed was drinking so that they could start drinking it, so happy to see "his beard and long hair back", and wondering what kind of jeans he was wearing.

I guess it is just funny to mock one group of mindless followers to a live group of mindless followers hanging on his every word--the only difference is the messenger.

I’m always a little amazed at how stupid the majority of Pearl Jam crowds are--kind of embarrassing to be honest.

If you're embarrassed and you think the crowds are stupid why bother going at all?
    NOPE!!!

Sorry to jump back in, I swore I was done with this one but couldn't let that pass. It just seems like this conversation has gotten so off track we're forgetting the one thing that's tying everyone on this board together (save one or two trolls that is).

its not bullshit.., dude. for me tis akin to people who pass you in the street who say hi how are you? they don't really want to know how you are, they say it purely on reflex. if i told people how i felt they'd run a mile and call the appropriate authorities. how can it be a amrl of respect from a stranger? they dont know me? i do believe to truly repsect someone you must actually know them personally or by reputation at the least. you can't just assume they are a good person. they could be a serial killer for all i know. therefore they do not deserve my respect. let alone me blseeing tem or holding a door open for them.
and btw i hold the door open for ANYONE who is within space enough to take advantage of my pause. it matters not if they are a guy or a girl. it has nothing to do with chivalry. if someone held the door open for me be they male or female i certainly would not be rude. i may utter a thanks, i may not.
i do not see it as disrespectful that i dont offer a thanks to someone who blesses me in ignorance. the fact that i do not chastise them is enough respect as far as im concerned. i do not belittle them nor draw attention to the blessing. i did not ask for it, so why should i compromise myself in saying thank you or whatever it is you people expect of me, if it is counter to my beliefs. i mean shit sometimes i even smile to show im not truly offended, even though blessing is not something i am comfortable with. so just back the fuck off and save the blessing for people you know are believers.
