Yankees claim catcher Eli Whiteside from SF Giants
The Yankees really like Giants catchers. In April they acquired Chris Stewart (for George Kontos) and today they have claimed Eli Whiteside on outright waivers. Johnny Rabb and Marcus Jensen should expect phone calls momentarily.
This is all part of the process of shedding players from the 40-man roster to make room for young prospects who have reached a threshold by which they must be protected from being claimed in the December Rule 5 draft. I’m told other players will coming off the 40-man soon.
Technically, Angel Pagan, Marco Scutaro, Melky Cabrera, Jeremy Affeldt, Aubrey Huff, Guillermo Mota, Ryan Theriot and Freddy Sanchez are off the 40-man already because they are free agents.
Whiteside had little chance of playing for the Giants again. He leaves after four seasons. He got the most playing time in 2011, when Buster Posey got hurt and Whiteside had 213 at-bats. His two most memorable moments as a Giants were catching Jonathan Sanchez’s 2009 no-hitter and going into an offensive guard pass-protection stance against the Phillies’ Shane Victorino during a benches-clearing thing in 2011.
Whiteside leaves with a nice parting gift: a second World Series ring.

Never any doubt. Hopefully 3 of the core 4 will be playing next year.
Free agency has begun. Let's get going.

Kid's gonna be good. Huge fucking year he had. The one bright spot this year.
I'll feel much better about next season if he comes back.
I wish it was ARod deciding between the Yanks and Japan. Hey oh!
You got a chuckle out of me with that one.
Agreed. I'm thinking he will.
In the most obvious news ever department, Boras thinks the Yankees should resign Soriano.

Maybe maybe not. Deals like the Marlins/Blue Jays proposed deal lets me know there is still hope.

The Yankees asked all the minor leagues to.
Didn't know that and not quite sure what the reasoning is.
Am sure it's just branding and merchandise.
Not looking good on Kuroda
Not good. Not good at all. :fp:
