I'm making my first trip ever to Portland for the show with my GF. Other then already deciding that we'll be spending Sunday taking a drive along the Columbia River and up to Mt. Hood, we have no idea what else we'll want to see. Any particular recommendations for sight seeing, places to eat, etc?

Long, but decent article about Portland written in the New York Times. Quite a bit about the food scene, the overall feel of the town and some good links for places to eat and check out. Might be decent reading for anyone who is traveling to town for the show.
Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone. As for budget, we're not gonna be high rolling at all, I'd say we'd like to keep our meals pretty reasonable, I don't want to be eating at $30 a plate places. If I had any specific desires for food, I'd say I want to do a few microbrews, and try at least one seafood place.
I'd say I also really just want to catch some good general sight-seeing too. Like trains that might give us a good view of the city, neighborhoods to check out, museums or whatever. Having lived in Chicago before, I felt like I got to experience SOOO much more when I started to explore individual neighborhoods instead of doing the tourist bull shit everyone associates with Chicago. That's where you really got a feel for the city.
I'm going to be staying in Beaverton for at least 2 nights I think BTW, so maybe some suggestions for there would be good too.
I won't change direction, and I won't change my mind - E.V.

There's several cool neighborhoods to check out. One would be Nob Hill/NW 23rd. A lot of cool little shops & cafes with old Victorian style houses around.
Another neighborhood is the Hawthorne District. Lots of old houses and little shops as well. A very artistic type vibe there.
I'm new to this. What type of places are preferred? Do you have separate places for the pre and post parties? Or do you reconvene at the same place? I know, too many questions. But I can suggest some locations.

If you are coming from the midwest, you might have interest in a trip to the Oregon Coast. The weather usually sucks, but its a very nice coastline and usually very few people on the beaches here compared to other beach locations. Its only about 1.5 hours drive or so. Cannon Beach is neat.

Yeah I was kind of wondering about the coast too. IYO is it better then a Columbia River drive? Is Astoria worth seeing?

Lets try and figure out how close does everyone want to be be to the venu. If drive time to the venue isn't an concern, Portland is going to be the way to go because you have a ton of options. If you don't want to drive 30 minutes or more to get to the venue, then you should look in Vancouver.
They do have a restaurant, but they also have individual party rooms you can rent (or however you might negotiate the room). Once you click on that link above, click on "group sales" on the left hand side of the page. Then click on "events packet" near the middle of the page. It gives you information on sizes of rooms and minimum purchases for the rooms to be used near the bottom of that events packet information. If they would donate the room that'd be cool. Otherwise, I would have no problem contributing to the cost of getting a room that might hold everyone.
Any of the McMenamins are going to be really cool. Especially for out of towners to check out.
This place is about 30 minutes from the venue and about 15-20 minutes from the airport.
If near the airport, this restaurant might be good. It is a burger-and-beer place, but they are known for really REALLY good and greasy burgers and not much else. So if we had any vegetarians, they might not have options on the menu. There is a separate room they let groups use.
I don't think they have a website, but here is a yahoo listing for the place so you might get an idea of what you're looking at.
It is within 5-6 miles of the airport and about 30 minutes from the venue.
Let me know if you want me to give ideas in Vancouver WA. Anything in Vancouver would be about 10-15 minutes to the venue and 20-30 from the airport. As I mentioned earlier, there is a place by the venue. Less than a mile. But then if folks wanted to go back to their hotel before hand, that would be a hassle.
Anybody know of good tent camping close to the venue?
I gave this information to another member here via pm
There is a campground located about 6 miles to the Northeast of the amphitheater. I've never stayed there. I have friends that live next door though on 5 acres and I get the impression it might be a bit of a party place because when we're outside we hear music and hollering on the weekend sometimes at night. Good or bad? Meh. Anyway it's name is Big Fir. I think it is going to be your closest and least expensive place, but I don't know much about it's amenities. 360-887-8970 or 800-532-4397.
There were a couple other places, but I believe there wasn't any room that weekend. I can keep looking if you want. Just let me know.
Astoria....its not a real nice town. A better tourist option would be the Cannon Beach, Seaside, Gearhart area. A bit closer drive from Portland too. Google "haystack rock cannon beach" under images to get an idea of what the coast is like. Interestingly, locals tend to call the coast "the coast" as opposed to "the beach". Not sure why..
I'm not too sure on where to go for the pre-party. Staniches is okay, but it should be known, they only serve beer if I remember correctly. Not a hard alcohol spot. On the other hand, its about 15 blocks from my house. I don't know vancouver too well. This is probably one of the biggest drags with the Clark County Amphetheater....lack of facilities around the place.

quite possibly a stupid question, but are you a big game captain? My father runs the same business down in the Florida Keys and prior to that, Maui. I'm actually looking for a recommendation for a captain on the North Shore of Oahu in November around Thanksgiving.

Here is an idea of a place that is in Vancouver WA, it's about 5 minutes away from the Amphitheater. Close to the park and ride bus to the Amphitheater, and close to I-5 and I-205.
It is a restaurant with a full bar...both beer and hard alcohol. They allow people under 21. They have a banquet room that holds up to 100 people at no charge (according to the website).
If we're talking Vancouver, this is a really good choice. I've eaten there and it's not a dump.
Also, there is a bank with a cash machine and a liquor store in the same parking lot.
I've actually been to that spot. I didn't think it was too bad. its in Hazel Del proper right? Salmon Creek Exit I think? I would not be opposed to having the Fundraiser here if its not in Portland.

It is the Salmon Creek exit. It's just about all we have in that area that isn't fast food or some type of overpriced chain. Easy freeway access for everyone. Not too expensive.

A great example of something that is uniquely Portland!
If you're going up to Mt. Hood you should stop at Timberline Lodge. Great place built in the 20s with great views (assuming the weather is good). Also a nice bar inside to have a beer or wine while looking out at the summit.
I made the Columbia gorge / Multonomah Falls / Hood River / Timberline Lodge / back to Portland round trip a few years back when my cousin visited from Belgium. It was a fantastic day trip and he loved it.
