And also, I drove past the Venue and into Portland on my way home from Seattle.

It's took 8 Minutes and was 9 miles w/ Light traffic to get to into Portland proper. So 15 min to downtown.

The above hotel is right downtown and seems like a bargin at $66 a night.

I live in Portland so I don't stay in hotels but people might like the Doug Fir or the Kennedy School experience. Both in 'hip' areas and have cool bars or whatnot. Just my two pennies.

how far is downtown Portland from the Airport, Im coming in on Saturday at 11am and then I have to be at the airport the next morning at 5am OUCH! Im literally just going for the show and staying less than 24 hours in Portland, I think I may be better off booking a hotel right by the airport?

    What do you guys think?

From downtown to the Airport is about 13 miles. For drive time your looking at around 15-20 minutes, especially that early in the morning.

well Ill be driving probably around 4:30am ...
My flight leaves back to Miami @ 6am, I might look into some downtown hotels rather than staying by the airport, but wait! now the questions is, when you are driving back from the venue, do you go by the airport first or downtown? that may be the deciding factor on where I stay :D

Yes you would pass by the airport on your way back from the venue to downtown.

Geographically, it would be the Ampitheater which is on the North side of the Columbia River, then the Airport which is on the South side of the Columbia River and then downtown Portland.

Since you're only in town for such a short time, it may make more sense to stay by the airport. There's not a lot to do out there but you're only here for 24 hours. Plus, I would think rooms might be cheper at the airport. And you could always drive downtown if you get bored. The one nice thing about the Portland airport is that the rental cars are right on site, you don't need to take one of those rental cars buses to go pick up your car.

The Airport is not on the way home from the Venue unless you take I-205. If you take I-5 which is what you would do if you are staying in Portland, it's not on the way. It's more like a triangle with the Venue to the north, Portland to the South and the Airport half way in between to the East.

Yeah Im thinking that's the way Im going to go, Ima book a hotel by the airport and then drive downtown and probably stay there during the day and then stop by the hotel and drop our bags on the way to the venue, im not planning on going out after the show as I would probably miss my flight if I party until the wee hours of the morning  or if there is an after party we might not even book a hotel maybe we'll just go to the party and then off to the Airport and sleep on the place

so what do you recommend? should I just stay our and go party after the show and then go straight to the airport and recoup my sleep on the plane? :D

    Mrs Vedder78,

Stay by the airport. If you're flying out that early you don't want to stay downtown. And whoever said it was a triangle was right. The airport is on the Portland side of the river but it is east. Downtown is directly south from the venue. Have a great time at the show, go to the airport and crash. If you had more than 24 hours in Portland, then I'd stay downtown.

I guess Ill wait to see what plans Laura has for an after party, that's kinda what we did after FTM earlier this year, we got out I wanna say at 1:30am maybe and then we headed to return the car and crashed by our gate at the airport and then slept for the rest of the trip back home.
it's either that or book a hotel by the airport to sleep 3/4 hours after the show..

Laura, are you wanting to pre/post party in Vancouver or Portland? Keep in mind (as I mentioned in another topic) traffic to/from the amphitheater is a real pain the ass. Depending on when you arrive, if you are too close to event time, allow a minimum of an hour to get there and anywhere between 1-2 to get out. There is one road in and the same one road lets thousands of people out.

There is only one bar/restaurant near the amphitheater. It isn't classy or anything even close to it, but it might make it easy to NOT have to battle traffic beforehand. It's called "Jollies". This would be an option if you want to keep it close to the venue. Otherwise, Portland has so many options, it would just depend which part of the city would work for everyone. Anyway, here's the info for Jollies. It's about a 1/2 mile from the venue. I don't even think it has a website. But it has food and drinks and it's pretty big.

Post party just keep in mind that hellish exit when planning the time and place.

Also count my hubby and I in. Let me know if you have questions. :) I live in Vancouver WA/Clark County so I have lots of information on the area.

  • if you're going to get a hotel, i'd say definately get one at the airport. that being said, you're probably looking at $75-$100 for a place by the airport, so living it up at an afterparty and sleeping on the 5+ hour flight home sounds like the most economical... you'll get to spend the most time with your friends, and have more fun. sleep is overrated. ;)

i haven't been to the venue before...sounds like it's gonna be pretty messy getting in (and out)...hopefully we will all get there in time for ticket pick up and ben harper + R7!...we can't have a picnic in the parking lot? just kidding :P

    Hey everyone,

I'm making my first trip ever to Portland for the show with my GF. Other then already deciding that we'll be spending Sunday taking a drive along the Columbia River and up to Mt. Hood, we have no idea what else we'll want to see. Any particular recommendations for sight seeing, places to eat, etc?

If you're driving along the Columbia up to Mt Hood, stop by Mulnomah Falls. It may be a little crowded on the weekend (maybe not in September as much since school's back in) but if you hike to the top, there are less people. ;) You can't miss them. They are the largest falls in Oregon. Beautiful!

Also, you can stop in Hood River. They have some nice little restaurants and the Full Sail brewery, if you're into that. Or you can always grab a sandwich, sit down on the river and watch the wind surfers/kite boarders.

As for Portalnd, you can PM and I'll give you a ton of suggestions. One of them would be, If you plan on spending Sunday in Portland, go to Portland City Grill. It's at the top of the US Bank tower and has a wonderful view of the city. I go on Sundays because they have Happy Hour ALL DAY in the lounge. It's kind of classy but a shirt and tie are not required. I'm sure if you wear a shirt with sleeves, you'll be fine.

    Enjoy!

  • There is a new "Loft by W" or whatever its called by the Portland airport. Its right at Cascade Station - a new large shopping area. Its like a "W" but more affordable. Maybe like courtyard by Marriott or something. I agree with those who say stay by the airport. I actually had a hard time getting a cab at 4am in the past. Its after the graveyard shift, but before most of the earily morning cabbies are out there. Probably the worst time possible to catch a cab. We had one called the night before for our run to the airport, and he didn't show up. You can google Portland cascade station if you want to see what shopping is available.

(Indifferentman) Portland has a lot of great food options. It really depends on what your budget is and what type of places you want to go. Lots of great breweries if you are into micro brews. Portland has the most micro breweries of any city I believe. Lots of "foodies" in this town too so there are a lot of fancy restaurants.

I can't believe the "premier parking" is already sold out :x
