I also laugh at the "cheesy" element - admit it, there's always been a fair amount of cheesiness when dealing with Pearl Jam's music ("Better Man", anyone?). It just seems like people are looking for things to criticize instead of just enjoying the music.

It's catchy as all hell. I've had it on repeat for like the last half hour. Can't wait for the album now.

Ilike this track just as much as anybody on here...BUT

How in the world, can you compare this song to BETTERMAN?!

Come on dude....get your ears outta your asscrack!
Did you read what I posted? I was speaking of the element of cheesiness that's always been present in Pearl Jam's material. "Better Man" is a classic, but it's also pretty cheesy. I guess I don't necessarily see that as a negative thing.

absolutely. i agree whole-heartedly here...it'll be interesting to hear Backspacer. its clear that they're experimenting with this one. i think the fixer will do well on the radio...despite mmr making fun of it (shit heads)

No...I think it's clear they are NOT experimenting at all.

He meant lyrically Betterman is cheesy, he didn't say it sounded similar to The Fixer.

No. Actually most callers didn't like it if you listened. Including people getting sick when they listened to it.

i dont agree with you. 'the fixer' is quite a departure from PJ's standard "sound." therefore, in my book, they are experimenting.

w/e those same people will end up liking it in 4-10 more listens... it's just hard to get into for people because it's not really typical PJ.

As far as the new tune goes I like it. I love how people here poop themselves when PJ writes a song with a hook in it. There's nothing wrong with writing a memorable catchy song that's fun to listen to. There's some typically interesting Gossardy chord changes and rhythmic weirdness that makes it non-cliche. I do wish Mikey was given more to do here--it could use a full on solo in the middle or at the end.

P.S. Lord how I've missed Brendan O'Brian. Matt's drums and Jeff's bass sound incredibly tight.

What you said. That's the catchiest chorus they've done in a long time and I dig that. Some of the verses are awkward, but even on a compressed mp3, this sounds miles above the production of the last album. I like it more than Got Some. It's kinda in the vein of Down to me... very laid back and fun and positive.

ok, on about listen 10 or so and reading the boards while I listen. Here's where I am as a 37 year old dad of 2: there was a pretty good post about someone saying their 4 year old was singing the chorus and some other comments that are making me "see" this song different.

PJ defines music for me. There is nothing else. I was drunk in a basement at a college party when I first heard them and I haven't stopped listening since. This morning, my kids were sleeping when I heard this the first few times and I'm like "eh, that's not good...too poppy." Not what I KNOW as PJ. No where close.

But then my kids wake up and I'm listening some more and the older one starts dancing around, asking me to play it again. My point: I need to look in the mirror here and see them and me. I'm late 30's, they are older. This is the music they are making at this point of their lives. Ten FLOORED me when I first heard it - it really CHANGED my life, like I'm sure it did a lot of people here.

But I'm not at that point anymore, and neither are they. I'm on listen 13 or so at this point as I type and my kid is still asking for it. It's not bad. Without the strings attaching it to the PJ that I know - just hearing this song by itself and making up some band name, we'll call them Opal Juice.

This is a pretty good Opal Juice song. It's a heck of a lot better than most popular radio and what's most important is my 4 year old just asked for it again. It's a fun song. PJ doesn't equal fun for me. It's anger, emotions, starts and stops, unsuspecting twists and turns, thought provoking...

but that's ain't them anymore and you know what, good for them. Be whatever you want to be Opal Juice. I'll adjust. And you just gained a new 4 year old fan. Now maybe he'll want to wear the many PJ t-shirts I've bought him.

Contemporary was said in a negative fashion. As in "That was... uuhhh ... contemporary". They compared it to the Jonas Brothers (jokingly, but they laughed at it). They tried as hard as they could to talk it up, but most of the callers said they didn't enjoy the song, or that it was "OK". Is that not an accurate description of the morning?

I like it better with each listen. I still prefer "Got Some," which burrowed its way into my brain immediately (woke up in the middle of the night with it playing in my head).

Is it different? -- oh, yes. I kind of like the upbeat sound. The first time I listened to "Avocado," all I could think was, "wow, Eddie sounds angry!" So this is a nice change in that respect (and I liked "Avocado"). But I like 'different.' I think I mentioned recently that I am unusually fond of "Push Me Pull Me." :)

I'm with the previous posters who noted the band's versatility. I want to try to wait to formulate too much of an opinion about this song until I hear the rest of the album. Right now, I'm perplexed. To me, this has a very different sound from "Got Some." I was in Newark when Eddie debuted "Unthought Known," and while I have no idea what the finished version of that song sounds like, when I consider what I heard vs. "Got Some" vs. "The Fixer," wow, those are three very different songs. This could be a very interesting album.

Right it is possible that I may like this song eventually but I know it is sub par still. I think it comes down to what you expect from the band. If you got into the band in the last few years, you will probably think The Fixer is great. If you got into the band from the beginning you will probably thing The Fixer is garbage. I guess it comes down to what "era" of Pearl Jam got you interested. If No Code is your bag, this probably is upsetting to you. Yes I think bands should evolve and change but I feel like Pearl Jam has been going in reverse. I feel like they tried to experiment more a few albums in and now are doing what is easy.

    Interesting post.

I wonder how my ten-year-old PJ fan will react. He likes "Got Some." His favorite PJ songs are "Black" and "Dirty Frank," so I do not dare predict how he will receive "The Fixer."

I agree, god help us if one of the songs on backspacer has strong riff, solid lyrics with a chorus that everyone can sing along too, and a guitar solo in the middle or at the end. Everyone here will go crazy that they sold out and did a classic rock song and not something totally experimental.

But i did not think theese "simple" or "few" lyrics was better, or helped this song. he still struggles it sounds, but maybe I'm the only one not liking his new way of singing - with lacks energy, attitude and harmony according to me atleast.

He has a voice that rocks accoustic songs (into the wild), but maybe they should look over the way they write their rocksongs because Eddie has changed his singing into a, to me, weird direction. Sounds so hoarse and strained...

The Tragically Hip have done a great job of this recently. They had a run of albums and shows where the singer was really off... forcing his vocals, weird timing, lots of screeching. But with their past album they released one with a lot of acoustic and epic influences that allowed him to relax and feel more comfortable. The album is the best they've done in over a decade and the one show I saw was the best concert I've ever been to (including PJ). Ed's still got it, he's just not using it well.

if i had to compare it to any specific sound from a PJ song i'd say it sounds most like unemployable. its not bad after the first listen..wasn't expecting as poppy of a song and i don't mean that in a bad way..just unexpected.

That assumes it gets played 4-10 more times. If the initial response is pretty lukewarm, this thing could never be played again after tomorrow. Radio is fickle like that.

And the Opal Juice thing = awesome :)

I'm liking it more with each listen, but I will say one thing - the fade out is TOTALLY unnecessary. Damn I hate when they do that, especially to more rock-oriented jams.
