  • You know... I like it.
I read that it seems a little "Yield"... and I agree... B-Side Yield... and that's not a bad thing.

    I'm diggin' on this.

I have a great home sound system, so I cranked it up really loud and I like the song a lot more. It started to grow on me. Its definitely not their best, but its not all that bad the more I listen to it. I cant wait to hear the B-side Supersonic.

The band knows this. They don't expect everyone to love their shit. The only thing they care about is the music they are making now.

This is an important point to remember. If you look at what they have done over the years, it is pretty obvious, to me at least, that the band is focused on the music and on what feels right and interesting to them at the moment.

Even the production, which I was a little unsure about at first, just clicked for me on my fourth listen. Fucking love this and can't wait to hear a high-quality version.

I'm not sure what the big deal is... I love this song a lot more than WWS or anything from S/T.. This is a good catchy pop song that I can't stop playing.

It's frustrating we are stuck listening to a crappy myspace stream of a new song. Just release a good quality download for .99C already. I don't understand why they choose to delay everything (news, releases, announcements, etc).

Can't stand the bridge. At least WWS isn't repetitive.

At first I didn't enjoy the song that much. One thing I love about Pearl Jam is that Eddie's vocals in the studio and live sounds the same (not like a lot of bands, even though Pearl Jam is BY FAR BETTER LIVE THAN IN THE STUDIO). In this song his voice sounds like it was played with or altered quite a bit and I don't like that aspect.

But nonetheless, I do enjoy The Fixer. I've always said reason why I can listen to Pearl Jam songs over and over is because their music isn't all the same. Most people never accept change right away but, I dont' think this song is really that shit. :P

As far as people feeling embarrassed to be caught listening to it... LOL who cares what you listen to :D it's about the music not what other people think.

How could “The Fixer” ever live up to the hype?
It’s understandable to be under whelmed by the song.
It is after all new Pearl Jam…I remember hearing Corduroy for the first time wondering “What the Fuck is This Shit?

There was so much and hype and anticipation surrounding this date July 20th.

Diehard fans have been collectively whipping themselves into a lunatic frenzy over the last couple of months, drooling over every piece of leaked information surrounding “Backspacer” -the album- and The Fixer –the single- Once it was reported that Brendon O’Brien was back behind the boards tweaking the sounds, wild dreams of Yield, No Code, and Vitalogy-like masterpieces stared swarming the brain.

With this kind of expectation, it kind of puts a song in a very precarious position…Truthfully, It’s almost unfair.

What is immediately apparent is that this song is quite a departure for Pearl Jam.
“The Fixer” chugs along with a hooky melody and verse that wouldn’t be out of place in an 80’s New Wave song. What makes it most strange is that It follows a basic verse, chorus, verse structure that is rather foreign to this band; especially when you find out that it was written by Matt Cameron who is known more for writing some of the bands most angular and abstract songs like “Evacuation”.

You’d be very hard pressed to find a Pearl Jam song in the last 15 years that has dared to be this immediately digestible.

This may eventually give “Betterman a run for its money in regards to the title of Pearl Jam’s most radio friendly song.

The Chorus of “The Fixer” seriously get’s into your head and doesn’t let go; it’s very hard not to tap your feet and sing along to “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” part; it definitely has that windows down, summertime vibe to it.

For any other band this kind of blatantly catchy songwriting would be hardly surprising. But for Pearl Jam it’s bound to turn a few heads.

It’s hard to believe that this is the same band that could turn around and bust out “Sleight of Hand” or “Nothing as it Seems” in concert.

But after all, it’s these two extremes that make Pearl Jam such an amazingly interesting band.

This is a great post, and articulates exactly what I've been thinking. I wish people could just step back and enjoy some new music from a band that has always, and will always, be amazing. Plus, think about 'The Fixer' live.

Which channel? Alt Nation, Octane, Spectrum?

Man all this talk over one song! It's definitely different than I expected. I'm a little confused at two things though:
    1. Radio friendly talk-I'm not sure what is radio friendly anymore. There's a lot of diversity at the top of the charts. To suggest that PJ made this track to go to number 1 and make money is kinda ridiculous. I respect people's opinions, but I think that kind of talk is off base. If anything, is almost so poppy that it's weird if that makes sense.

    2. Unemployable comparisons-I'm not hearing it, except for "yea yea yea" and "oh oh oh". Remember when folks compared Unemployable to Shania Twain?

Oh: Alt Nation and The Spectrum have each played it once so far.

is it Pearl Jam's best song ever? in my opinion, no. but it's a damned good song & a million times better than the "new" crap that radio stations play these days. i rarely listen to my radio anymore. but about 2 weeks ago, i had to drive to Dallas & forgot my iPod. so, i listened to "rock radio". it was horrible. then i found npr on the dial & kept it there.

I think it's pretty good to be honest. My initial reaction is similar to when I heard World Wide Suicice for the first time - "That will kick ass live..." I was right about WWS and I'm pretty confident about The Fixer

The ten-year-old weighs in with his first impressions: "It's pretty good. It is a short song for Pearl Jam. It is kind of repetitive. I like it, but I like "Got Some" better."

I like the song, though not as much as "Got Some." However, I personally think it sounds like something from Riot Act...maybe a bit like "Down." Anyway, I remember Eddie saying he wanted to go back to the sound the band had on songs like "Down" and "Sad," except this has a much lighter sound than either IMO. Still a good song, I wish they hadn't had the fade out in the end and left more room for Mike to play. But maybe they'll leave that for the album :D
