    BREAK A LEG, CHARLIE!
As Bruce and the gang kick off the first European leg of the Magic tour tonight in Madrid, it's Charles Giordano's first show playing with the E Street Band.

And don't forget: European concertgoers, we're counting on you for setlists and show reports. For both the website and the magazine, we hope you'll tell us about what you see. Please send your reports to onstage@backstreets.com (and scans of ticket stubs, ads, photos, etc. to images@backstreets.com). Thanks as always for the help!

PIT procedure for Madrid Night 1 :

"There were 200 pit bands issued, but no lottery; instead, just the mad dash of old, and a check for wristbands at the pit gate. By the mid-point of the show there must have been 600 crazies in there. As is typical for Spain and Italy, far more respect, sobriety, sense of community and love than on Bruce's U.S. home turf, reminiscent of the passion that used to be a part of the pre-1984 North American fan behavior. Exactly why Europe is the essential Bruce experience." "Darkness" was a standout, and "Thunder Road" was played by request -- a request that was echoed by 20,000 people calling for it, too. "Okay, okay, we got it!" said Bruce. A strong showing from Clarence, and Dan Federici wasn't the only bandmember missing -- Patti Scialfa was absent, too. Surprisingly, they kept "Tunnel of Love" in the set anyway, with Soozie Tyrell stepping up. And as for Giordano, Miller tells us, "There were points where he was clearly in awe. To paraphrase the old Oldsmobile ad: this isn't your father's Seeger Sessions show."

November 25 / Madrid, ESP / Palacio De Deportes
Notes: Early arrivals to the European opener in Madrid caught Charlie Giordano practicing before the show, getting ready for his E Street Band debut. Despite that pre-show entertainment, it was a restless crowd that had to wait until 9:50 for the concert to start -- they kept themselves occupied by doing the wave and chanting "Bruce! Bruce! Bruce!" Springsteen himself appeared to be suffering from a cold, but he fed off the energy of the wild audience, which sang and shouted along from the beginning. Ross Miller describes the scene: "There were 200 pit bands issued, but no lottery; instead, just the mad dash of old, and a check for wristbands at the pit gate. By the mid-point of the show there must have been 600 crazies in there. As is typical for Spain and Italy, far more respect, sobriety, sense of community and love than on Bruce's U.S. home turf, reminiscent of the passion that used to be a part of the pre-1984 North American fan behavior. There is a possibility my exams clash with it though, so those possible extra dates would work out pretty handy.

actually the system is pretty much the same, but depends on the venue:

this is from backstreets/ btx :

    Pittsburgh GA Pit Procedure

    http://www.mellonarena.com/event/evt_detail.asp?id=497

    GA FLOOR PROCEDURES

On the day of the show,Wednesday November 14th, sequentially numbered wristbands will be distributed beginning at 2:00 PM outside GATE ONE. Wristbands will be distributed until 5:00 PM.

A starting number will be randomly picked at 5:15 PM; this will be announced and displayed on a placard at the gate. The starting number will be drawn randomly by a fan. The fan holding the wristband that matches the starting number drawn will be first in line (i.e. if #'s 1 - 100 were issued and number 10 was drawn, the line would start with 10, then 11, 12, 13 through 100 then 1-9). When the starting number is announced, the line will shift accordingly. No more wristbands will be distributed after 5:00 PM

At 5:30 PM All fans with GA tickets and a wristband should begin lining-up in numerical order, beginning with the announced number. The purpose of the random number distribution is to insure that all fans have the same chance of being first in line, eliminating the need to camp out. This policy also helps to insure customer safety and provides for an effective means of crowd control. The line will be escorted into the GA Pit Area in front of the stage approximately 10 minutes before the rest of the patrons are allowed to enter the venue.

One wristband per patron and the patron must also be in possession of a GA ticket.

A wristband and a GA ticket are required to enter the GA Pit Area in front of the stage.

Anyone who receives a numbered wristband between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM has a chance to be first in line to enter the Pit Area, but a wristband does not guarantee a place in the Pit Area

Wristbands will be issued and affixed to the patron’s wrist only after the patron's ticket has been verified a GA ticket.

NO WRISTBANDS WILL BE ISSUED AT THE GA PIT ENTRANCE ON THE FLOOR WITHIN THE VENUE.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT NO PATRON, FAN, OR CLUB RUN LIST WILL BE HONORED BY TOUR PERSONNEL, SECURITY OR BUILDING PERSONNEL!

The above procedures will be implemented and supervised by touring personnel.

    >NO CAMERAS WILL BE PERMITTED INTO THE ARENA FOR THIS EVENT

best of luck in the pit lottery kids !

    Dear Bathgate66,

Not much stops the show -- this rarely happens, except in cases of detatched retinas or particularly nasty bugs. Sounds like Bruce has the latter. We wanted to get this official statement to you right away, in case this affects you:

    Arnhem concert moved to tomorrow

Tonight's Bruce Springsteen & The E Street band concert in the Gelredome in Arnhem will be postponed until tomorrow, Saturday, December 1st. Bruce Springsteen won't be able to perform tonight, due to a severe cold.

He states he is very sorry to have to postpone tonight, but does want to give the fans the show they deserve. And at this point, he feels he won't be able to do so. However, he is convinced his health will be recovered sufficiently tomorrow night, to perform 100% up to standards.

Tickets will stay valid for tomorrow night.

    For more information, visit http://www.mojo.nl.

    Feel better, Bruce!
