After listening to Dark Matter, a lot of the lyrics are about fractured relationships, breaking up and wonder if they are about Matt? Wreckage, Scared of Fear, Setting Sun, upper hand, got to give. Makes sense if Matt made the decision before they started recording DM.
There was a lot of speculation when the album came out that the songs meant that Ed's marriage was falling apart, and I was very skeptical. I'm even more skeptical that Ed wrote a half-dozen songs about the drummer leaving the band.

It’s possible some of the lyrics are about Matt leaving. It makes sense knowing what we know now. I thought it was about his relationship with his wife too when I first heard them. Just my 2 cents.

Hmmmmmm. I for one have always taken DM as a concept album. Interesting.
Matt retiring is more of a circle of life type of thing. We are all subject to it and I think they are pretty aware of that and when the second member says it’s time to retire then it’s time to be scared, unless we want a path to Foreigner Seattle..

Why is it taking so long for news about the future of the band? Who needs the suspense! LOL Anyone have a guess at why we're not getting any info?
There’s nothing to tell at the moment. They’ll let us know in due course
I'd like to think the future of PJ is not completely unknown at this point, but maybe it is! They could easily reassure us that they intend to carry on.

They did in their understated way in the announcement they released after Matt released his.

Yeah, I wish they would say something more. At least something like “we are in the process of finding someone but have every intention of moving forward”. 🤷🏼♂️

Wrong band. Communication isn’t really their specialty
If we all believe they knew about this for a while at least since Pittsburgh they had every chance to just say they are done when Matt announced. If we learn they found out more recently than most think then I would be worried.
As a fanbase we haven't exactly been gracious with things like "big, bold, and free" or "Ole from the forthcoming album" so (amongst other reasons) I'm sure we'll hear more once there is something to actually report

Does anyone actually know when this decision was made? It's all just a rumors, right? . It could have happened the day of the announcement for all we know.Messages easily could have been written by some PR pro to make everything sound vague. Or maybe I'm over-thinking it! lol
I'd honestly be surprised to learn Pearl Jam was actively looking for a new drummer right now. All indications were they planned to take a break after the tour. My bet is they are doing just that.
The drummer issue will be handled down the road when the foursome comes back together. They may not even know at this point how they plan to proceed with the search, nevermind who they will target.
I really feel that the end of their last show of the last tour made it more than obvious that they knew at that point. When exactly they knew before then is completely irrelevant IMO. I also think that the announcement in response to Matt's parting message made it totally clear that the band is continuing without Matt.
After that, i just guess that they are currently considering who to replace Matt with. I don't think it's feasible that any new drummer would have the same kind of role that Matt did in terms of the business of the band, but I feel confident that whoever they choose would be someone they expect or hope to contribute creatively, IF they intend on making any more albums (but of course that person wouldn't hold the same stakes business-wise/legally).. If they don't intend on making any new albums (which would surprise me), then meh, they would just need a good drummer for their shows, and they have a LOT of great options there either way, old or new. I hope it's someone younger than any of the old drummers. Someone 10 years younger would be cool. Old enough to live with the band, younger enough to have the energy needed.

They were acting a bit cryptic at the end of the second Raleigh show this tour. It was very subtle. The first night they were saying things like " we haven't been here in a while and that needs to change" . I don't know exactly what EV said the second night but it was something like "we won't be back for a long time". Like they were either done with North Carolina because they had finally played their make up show, or maybe it was something else. Either way, it was a weird feeling after he said it.

Whether you realize time waits for no one or like to hang with mothers little helper, what the stones continue to accomplish is astounding, and certainly not the norm for the human experience let alone active touring artists.

"But the Stones" is the music version of "But Nolan Ryan." Outliers are just that, baby.

I feel like Eddie says stuff like that all the time, randomly. People have been reading into such comments for years, always afraid they are about to quit after every tour, haha.

Would think a rock station that's been around for decades would actually have some actual inside info. But this article could have been written by any of us pedestrians on this forum.
