I recall Eddie saying he thought the band had "1 or 2 albums" still left in them just after the release of Dark Matter.  Now THAT put the fear of God in me that this band actually has an expiration date.  I also recall Eddie saying in PJ20 that the drummer was the most vital member of a band that replacing them is like a "heart transplant."  With Matt leaving, who knows what that could do with the song writing process going forward.  Just enjoy everything they have given us so far and the future will always be icing on the cake.
If you look at the history of rock and roll and all the drummer movement...Ed is wrong on this one.  The drummer is easily the most replaceable member of any band.
I would imagine that Ed knows the heartbeat of his own band (and was speaking specifically about PJ). But maybe that's just me.

After reading Barrett Martin and Thurston Moore’s autobiographies, and recently starting Steve Turner’s, I would love to see Matt release one in the future. He’s been a part of the scene for so long I’m sure he’d have some great stories to tell. Between Soundgarden, TOTD, PJ, and all of his other projects he could probably fill a couple of volumes!

The irony of the “drummer is replaceable in any band” is quite something considering this pic.

most people said the drummer is the MOST replaceable in bands, which is debatably a true statement. Did anyone say it absolutely? 100% of drummers in 100% of bands?

  • It depends on who the person is.  In Zeppelin, Bonham was irreplaceable.  PJ has had so many drummers in the past that we can imagine a new drummer and a slightly different sound.  That being said, Matt was simply unbelievable every show, every album.

More clues as to why Matt left from a new Billboard article. Just sounds like he was burnt out.

    Relevant quotes -

The Soundgarden album is just one of the endeavors Cameron’s been up to since, and before, announcing his departure from Pearl Jam — which he says was amicable. “I definitely gave them a lot of notice,” he notes. “I’ve spoken with Jeff (Ament) and Stone (Gossard) a little bit…It’s been fine. Hopefully we’ll get back together at some point and have a beer or something.”

He maintains, as he did in his original announcement, that “I’m at a point in my life where I want to redirect my time and energy in a way that is a little bit based on what I want to pursue as an artist at this point.”

“I was having some issues with (Pearl Jam’s) three-hour shows and constant touring and stuff,” Cameron adds. “That’s definitely an art form unto itself, to be able to do those types of shows…I’m at a point now where I want to do a face-melting 70-minute set, and that’s kind of what I’m focusing on right now.”

Wow, the "constant touring" was getting to him!?!

Can we all dare to dream that somehow the new drummer unlocks a world where Pearl Jam starts playing with a much greater frequency?

Interesting....I like the idea of a face melting set. It's been awhile since they did 3 hour sets so they clearly tried to adapt for him with shorter sets and fewer stops

Kind of what we expected I guess

  • I have honestly been bummed about his departure, that was until I read this article.

I am now more excited about PJ landing a drummer that is amped up, excited to have 'the job' and one that wants to give their heart to THIS band.

Matt's meant a lot to me, but I'm tired of the tonality he tends to evoke regarding PJ to the public. 27 years to 62 is starting to look more like a solid paycheck to get him elsewhere.

So are we expecting 3 hour sets + more dates and legs on upcoming tours.. he could of spinned it better, he’s making himself sound like he was the “dead weight”

You'd have to get everyone else on record with how they feel about 3 hour shows

Even with new drummer those 3 hr shows are thing of the past! With or without Matt.

I'm surprised he mentioned the three hour show when they haven't done that for years.

The band was clearly trying to make things work for him but I get it. Really looking forward to the SG album

Interesting comments from MC, for sure. They really don't play a lot of shows anymore. It's not like they go out for 70+ dates per year like the old days. It's more like 3 week legs at a time and very sporadic compared to years passed. Sure, it's still a commitment but it's not like it eats up a year at a time. More like a few months.

And 3 hour shows? They've been at 2:15 - 2:30 on the last couple of tours. I'm sure that's no cakewalk but it's not the consistent 3 hour+ shows of the past.

Anyway, I still love MC and wish him the absolute best, but it's unfortunate to hear that he really didn't seem stoked to be in the band anymore.

I vote for the reinstatement of Dave Krusen!!!!!!   :)
