Did I just read in the Globe and Mail that Alberta is building 2 forced treatment institutions for addictions? What's next, building institutions to "straighten out" gays and lesbians?

That was a campaign thing here in BC too. There's a percentage of the drug addicted/mental health/population what wreaks havoc on the civilian population. Constant thefts, physical attacks etc.... Courts are a revolving door. So this is the new thing.
Of course we don't have enough facilities for people who voluntarily want treatment, but I do understand the goal. Try to get the worst of the worst off the streets so they're no long a threat to public or themselves. Right now, it's the inmates running the asylum (can do whatever they want) so I can see how bringing back involuntary stuff is making a comeback.
I haven’t read the article and don’t know the specifics of how it’s carried out, but if it’s simply a mechanism to keep addicts out of prison and into treatment instead, I’m for it. But if they can just toss anyone they want off the street into treatment, that will have an extremely low success rate, so I don’t see the point. And against your human rights I would think.
I don’t think we should be equating sexual orientation with drug addiction. Conversion therapy and addiction treatment are not in the same universe.

Would need to know more about what is being proposed... however as it was mentioned earlier... if this was part of say a sentence that avoided jail... I'm all for it.
A very intriguing journalism report was conducted last year by the CBC in Belleville. It took some conferring, but CBC was granted unrestricted access to a community police officer in Belleville. The officer was granted authorization to say and report anything... which is uncharacteristic.
The report showed perspectives from police, businesses, community housing, addicts, homeless, and anyone amongst the public that wanted their voice heard.
After hearing EVERYONE... the problem was crystal clear.... and the answer was unanimous.... 'the system is broken.'
One part of it I found interesting was listening to the officer and the business owners. One business owner in particular had contacted 9-1-1 about 6 times in one week and to the best of my recollection I think a person unfortunately passed away due to OD behind her store. Amongst that, she had folks living behind her store, to go along with a lot of theft, and customers being harassed.
So you have a handful of laws being broken with regards to the business and when they call the cops, the cops show, they do their thing, but when the perpetrator is brought to JP (Justice of the Peace) the JP says "this person is an addict, they have no place to live... what exactly do you want the justice system to do?" The thought process for a lot of the judges is that they couldn't find these people criminally responsible when they were hooked on drugs. Not to mention.. the back log of cases in the system due to a lack of judges.
With THAT scenario in mind... given the small amount of options... allowing these folks back on the streets does the public no good. Throwing them in jail does the drug addict no good. Having a third option to force them into rehab seems reasonable to me.
That said... every thing is based on the totality of the circumstances.

If only throwing people into rehab under the right circumstances were possible. As far as I can tell, not only are the laws not adequate to make that possible, but there is also a woefully inadequate rehab system available to use, nor are there enough people to staff a better one. Yeah, the system is broken.

Election day in Ontario, personally I think the appropriate outcome would be a reduced majority. Give him a spanking for the unnecessary election but would still leave the PCs with a strong mandate.

At the end of the day... sad to say but money (funding) is the general requirement here. And no this is not letting Trudeau off the hook... but his opponent (Pierre) is saying he'll fix everything. Homelessness, fentanyl crisis, and crime. Well.... how? This is the brick wall I run into with the Conservative Party so often. They're known as the party of fiscal responsibility and as such generally cut services. But if we all seem to acknowledge that funding is required... how is he going to be able to solve this crisis and balance the books? Legit question is anyone here is a Conservative and has seen this magical plan.
Just to be fair and this is off topic... but to throw some shade at Trudeau as well... this 2.3Billion rail plan connecting Montreal and Toronto... while GOOD (under the right circumstances) ... I don't think we're in a state of the right circumstances. That $$$ could be spread elsewhere. IMO

This is the same group who claimed Trudeau was a tyrannical dictator while they parked a truck in front of parliament that said 'fuck trudeau' for 3 weeks .... never got shot for it. never got jailed for it. Trudeau laughs this shit off. LOL Wonder how that would fly with Mr. Trump.

People are being required to justify their friendship or association with Trump (Gretzky most notably) where the politics has nothing (or very little) to do with the relationship.

You can't have people claiming you to be the "greatest Canadian ever" and go around as a public figure representing Canadians at cultural events AND be supportive buddies with someone who threatens Canada's economy and sovereignty and constantly makes statements completely disrespecting its head of government and identity as a free nation. That's absolutely ridiculous. Gretzky can't have it both ways. He, his wife abd Bobby Orr are absolute fools if they think he can. The fact that they are essentially trying to gaslight Canadians about it now is hilarious to me, but pretty on-brand for Trump supporters.

That’s well said, once he associated himself so closely with Trump, wearing a MAGA hat, attending the inauguration, you can’t be Canada’s captain. If it’s the Oilers celebration then fine but when it’s Team Canada in this political climate, best for Wayne to just sit this one out. Tone deaf selection, there were so many others that would’ve been great.

What I'm trying to understand here is that this appears to be utter hypocrisy... unless I'm mistaken. Breaking this down into crayons... we (most Canadians) are dismayed with the likes of Gretzky and Orr because of their ties to Trump. Trump, the absolute piece of shit... let's set aside what he's doing and saying about Canada. As a person and a 'leader' he is going way out of his way to punish those who do not see things the way he sees things. He's going out of his way to punish those who don't agree with him.
Trump is literally the type of person who wouldn't just voice his negative opinion about someone but take action against it. Here we are voicing our negative opinion about Gretzky and that's somehow not cool? We should stay in our lane? This has many names... gaslighting... manipulation... double standards. Whatever you want to call it.
Anyone who sides with Trump absolutely deserves the negative attention they get. And anyone who disagrees with that should really take a hard look at the man himself.... hopefully then they will understand why all the vitriol.

To me it's not a difficult thing to understand. There is a reason and a history as to why certain things are acceptable and certain things are not. No different than why Musk using the Nazi salute is and OUGHT to have been completely and utterly criticized. It wasn't. That's bad. Real bad. If we condone bad actors and bad actions.. those actions will multiply.
To what Darth is saying... sure, you may not need to justify a friendship... but that's a two lane road. I don't need to justify my distain for that choice. And if there are consequences to someone having that friendship.... those consequences also do not require justification.

If I was friends with a racist, convicted sex offender piece of shit, I would probably have to justify that friendship quite often to be honest. It’s Gretzky’s choice obviously, he doesn’t need to justify it to Canadians, but take some accountability and don’t have your wife and Trump say how upset it makes you. It shouldn’t be that hard to understand why you’re being criticized.

To what Darth is saying... sure, you may not need to justify a friendship... but that's a two lane road. I don't need to justify my distain for that choice. And if there are consequences to someone having that friendship.... those consequences also do not require justification.
