A cousin of mine, who I love dearly, works for a Republican congressman who is up for re-election. She shared one of his IG stories which asked for donations so he could "BEAT THE RADICAL LEFT". I couldn't help but laugh when I saw it. I sent her a laugh emoji. Didn't hear back lol.

This cousin's daughter just graduated from college, got a job as a finance coordinator w/the RNC, and is currently at the convention. And I'm going to see her and her mom and the rest of her family this Saturday, for a 1st birthday party that I can't really miss. I was dreading it before the events of this past weekend. Now, I'm seriously considering sending a gift and bailing on the party.

My sister in law plays in a band and supposedly said something like "if you don't like tRump then fuck you" at her show over the weekend. The crowd loved it because they are in Red Meat, OH but still. Her Dad hates tRump along with my wife (her sister) and I.

Ugh, that's no good. I don't envy you at all. Fortunately, although I'm close w/these cousins, we don't see each other often lol.

The mom has only been re-posting what her congressman has posted, not much else. But her husband has been posting about it non-stop, all the conspiracy shit and the fringe stuff.

I'm hoping they'll all be respectful enough to remember that the day is about the baby, but I don't think I'll be able to hold my tongue the moment they start spouting off.

And how do I explain to my other cousins, who I absolutely adore (I did a reading at their wedding) that I don't want to celebrate their daughter's 1st birthday because of the MAGA lunatics they invited?

You just have to hope that it doesn't come up.

I've learned to just ignore the little statements that seem to trigger political arguments. Last time we got together with my in laws everything was good and then my BIL said something like "yeah but now Biden wants to outlaw individually wrapped cheese slices" which had no relevance to anything we were discussing. I just let it go anymore.

I’d suggest at least a quick visit, maybe get there a little early, hopefully before the trumpers get all amped up. They are all psyched as they are expecting their man to rise to victory in the fall. Then run out if/when people start making derogatory comments. As far as an explanation,

“He purposefully tries to rip the country apart, by getting Americans to hate other Americans. Please don’t use his anger and to try to spread his hatred here.”

At this point I just walk away and laugh to myself later. If all of Trump’s transgressions haven’t dissuaded them nothing anyone can say now is going to. They are a lost cause. Just got to vote and hopefully never have to hear from Trump again after November

The party was incident-free and largely politics-free.

My younger cousin is now working for his campaign, and goes back and forth between Virginia and Mar-a-Lago. She has met him, his family, and others in his orbit.

I couldn’t be prouder of her, for landing a job on a presidential campaign 2 months after graduating college.

At the same time, it breaks my heart.

My brother in law said that to me...I was giving you an example as to why someone might not want to speak to a family member. It doesn't have anything to do with who they vote for...it has everything to do with the type of person they are.

This past weekend I came across something that made my heart a little sad.

20 years ago, my uncle's family welcomed triplets, after years of trying to conceive naturally and, ultimately, through IVF. The trio was born prematurely and spent their first 6mos in the hospital, and fortunately all made it through, now in their 3rd year of college.

My mom has a big family, and puts together a periodic family newsletter that everyone contributes to. My aunt put together a story of their first 3yrs, as they'd just started pre-school at that point (2007ish). One of the first paragraphs she wrote about how the trips were bringing all sorts of illnesses home, and "they were definitely going to get their flu shots early this year."

15 years later, we don't talk much any more. Aunt and uncle railed heavily against the covid vaccines, and now IVF. Uncle has renal amyloidosis, is on high-dose steroids and the wait list for a kidney transplant. Another aunt was an ER doc and tried talking to them about their folly, but some nuts you just can't crack.

It's the kids I worry about the most. Aunt tried to prevent them from going to the state university and isolate them in their rural 1000 person community, but two of them at least got out of her orbit and are getting an education.

Funny how the tables turn; I can precisely date when it happened. That's what a cult of personality does, and it never ends well for anyone - especially the personality themselves.

I remember when Obama beat Romney for his second term. My BIL and SIL bet me that the economy would crash by the next Thanksgiving...of course it didn't but they had some excuse for that when I brought it up.
