    I think it was about having to replace a drummer AND a bassplayer. More than replacing soley Jeff for some shows.
    Really though no matter what member it is, Covid penetrated the bubble.  Once could be an isolated incident, twice is a pattern plus we have no idea how many members of the crew also have it as they aren’t probably going to release that information to us as they aren’t the front facing public figures. 

    It could have just as easily got cancelled if Jeff never tested positive and 20 members of the crew did, so I don’t necessarily buy the argument that one is replaceable but the other isn’t, or if it’s two members positive then you can’t replace both temporarily. 

    If it becomes unsafe in their view, that’s it. And maybe that threshold was reached

    I think most bands would have cancelled if more than one member tested positive and couldn't play. I guess they figured out what was possible to "get through" and what wasn't. Would they have cancelled if Jeff got covid first, not sure? We will not know on this leg but we will see what happens in Europe and the 2nd US leg.

    If Jeff would have gotten it first they probably would've tried to find another bass player, and then would've cancelled if Matt then got sick.  I don't think what they did had anything to do with instruments, obviously if Ed had covid first they would've cancelled.

    I agree minus the fact we are two years into cancellations and reschedules.

    normally  no, I think in this situation the just might have tried. 

     I’m not convinced they would have replaced Matt either under normal circumstances

    Well we don't know if MFC is even ready to go.  So can you imagine bringing in an entirely new rhythm section?  That doesn't seem feasible.  Plus, all three of the drummers that played (not the kid and the guy from the audience) had worked with the band before.  So there was at least strong familiarity.

    I would imagine many Metallica fans would have said the same about going on without Lars Ulrich, before they did.

    And KISS fans about the band going on without lead singer and founder Paul Stanley, before they did.

    I think also the discussion with the band and management has to do with more than just "who will be on stage". There are other factors in play. Like Cropduster touched upon above.

    It's crazy that people actually want this guy back and to see him play with the band. He can get lost.

    Yeah that would have been the most amazing. I was at Oakland and was thinking about NY since he lives close to there.  But there was no way since he won't even tour yet.

    They played without Stone once before. 09/23/02 opening for The Who at the House of Blues for a benefit concert. They did have a cardboard cut-out of Stone on stage though. Of course that was a short set as an opener which is quite different than pulling off a real show without him.
