States that ended federal unemployment benefits earlier this summer saw August job growth at less than half the rate of states that retained the benefits, according to new data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Why it matters: Leaders in the largely Republican-led states had insisted that the benefits were discouraging people from work, and ended the assistance program early ahead of its planned expiration on Sept. 6.
- The benefits, which came in the form of weekly $300 payments, had been in place since spring last year to help families through the pandemic.
- A growing group of states began ending the benefits in June in what they called an effort to incentivize people to return to the workforce.
What they're saying: "Economists analyzing the unemployment issue have seen little evidence yet that cutting off the benefits has provided a clear boost to local labor markets, in part because of difficulties separating the influence of the payments from larger shifts in the labor force, or of the potentially offsetting damage done by the pandemic," Reuters writes.
Worth noting: When jobs are hard to fill, a broader worker awakening over the past year is part of the reason, Axios' Hope King writes.

But to be serious, the theatrics of mask-wearing (or lack thereof) by political leaders is getting beyond silly. Joe himself warns of variants and keeping others safe, but here he is maskless, not socially-distanced, around kids that appear too young to be vaccinated. So he doesn't wear his mask when surrounded by children, but he wore a mask while on a Zoom call a few months ago.
When I made fun of him for wearing a mask on a zoom, his devotees here pushed back by saying that there were probably other people in the room with him. Fine, but they were probably vaccinated, adults, and not as in close contact with him as the kids in the picture below.
Really, someone compare these two pictures and tell me how this isn't insane. And peaking of insane Biden mask behavior, check out these two pictures of him with Boris Johnson from a few days ago.

You hit the nail on the head; it’s political theatre. I think there are very few politicians that care about anything else other than the image they portray, but I’ve become a bit cynical over the years. If they look good, fake as they may be, it’s all good (regardless of any underlying morals or ethics). I would say this about Biden, Trump, Obama, Bush. It would be nice to have a president with actual concern about the well-being of people beyond the scope of politics, but I don’t know how you could ever legitimately discern that in this day and age.Ledbetterman10 said:

When I made fun of him for wearing a mask on a zoom, his devotees here pushed back by saying that there were probably other people in the room with him. Fine, but they were probably vaccinated, adults, and not as in close contact with him as the kids in the picture above.
Really, someone compare these two pictures and tell me how this isn't insane. And peaking of insane Biden mask behavior, check out these two pictures of him with Boris Johnson from a few days ago.
