Don't call out vaccinated people who opt out of shows because they don't want to mask up.
They aren't spreading misinformation....they are not working to try and spread the virus - they are fully vaccinated.
Right to choose to stay home is a position I would think we should respect 1000%.
I won't, right now, go to a show , even one that requires vaccinations even if I do wear a mask.  I'm fully vaccinated and am being very selective on what I venture into the masses to do.  Right now, concerts are not high enough on my list.  We all love Pearl Jam, I'm sure we all would love to see Pearl Jam.  Some of the settings are not ones we choose to be in.
In the case of concerts/events and the decisions to go forward or cancel, the voices refusing to wear a mask have the same effect as anti-vaxxers.  You think bands would be canceling if they had 100% cooperation from fans or a good way to enforce rules?  Airlines are functioning smoothly for the most part because passengers know their options are to mask up or be removed/arrested. 100% agree on the right to stay home.  If it was up to me, all concerts would be small enough to enforce rules right now.  Those of us willing to follow the rules could go, behave and enjoy the show.  Everyone else can stay home. But when you go full capacity knowing that fans will complain about every little thing as the situation changes on a daily basis, I don't blame big bands for not wanting to deal with it.

Give me a break.  There is literally a vaccine mandate (or negative test) to go to this outdoor show.  You're way off base with this.
The problem is that vaccines aren't enough to stop the spread right now. Vaccinated people are getting COVID (though the hosp/death rate is super-low). This is a new development since these shows were announced/sold, so if the venue/promoter/band has to adjust the requirements, so what? No one can predict the where the virus is going and some flexibility has to be acceptable. If it isn't to someone, then they should stay home, because the situation will probably change again next week. I stand by my statement.

haven't we known pretty much since the vaccines came out that the vaccine doesn't stop the spread? I don't feel like this is new information.
They were never 100% effective (no vaccine is), but Delta has increased breakthrough cases significantly.  Again, I'm not an infectious disease expert, so I try to listen to those who are.

You said "vaccines aren't enough to stop the spread right now....this is a new development since these shows were announced/sold".

    no, it isn't.
Delta...a mutation that the vaccine isn't as effective against as the original strain...isn't a new development since Ohana was announced/sold?

Sure, if you want to move the goal posts, cuz you didn't mention that specifically initially.
"Move the goal posts" implies bad faith, as if you didn't know that it's Delta causing these changes, so not gonna bother to respond.

I kind of get what you are saying but also think I am reading it like you mean that people who have tickets have a responsibility to go if the rules change and they don't like the change.
As if their opinion on going to the concert or not based on myriad potential reasons (including not wanting to wear a mask outside when vaccinated) should be ignored to keep concerts going and fight the anti-vaxx crowd?  To help the concert industry?
Doesn't make much sense to me.

I could tell you my personal situation in a PM if you like, and I'm sure you would say that you totally understand why I am choosing some opportunities to be out in the public as a fully vaccinated person who has no problem with wearing masks, and why other opportunities I am choosing to say no to.

What I read here from the two guys who shared what they did aligns with that same concept.

Putting someone who decides they don't want to go to the SHN or Ohana shows because of a change in policy, who is fully vaccinated, in the same bucket as an anti vaxxer makes no sense to me.

Not important, overall, just felt like sharing my two cents on what I was reading.  I can see you made clear that you weren't looking to harsh anyone.

This will be my last comment on this.  First, see Lollapalooza.  Zero masks and zero issue from that mass gathering according to the experts.  Second, I agree with you saying if a band/ venue/ promoter changes requirements and a ticket holder doesn't accept the changes, they should stay home.  That contradicts your barrage of comments that ensued when I said I'd stay home if a mask mandate was added.  It led to all sorts of BS assumptions including anti-vax, Trump, gun-toting, marrying a neighbor's dog, etc.  All good though.  That stuff is humorous to me and I have better things to do than argue on a rock band forum.

I'll apologize--I shouldn't have jumped on you like that.  I've seen you around these boards enough to know you're not a conspiracy nut.  I was surprised by your stance (for that same reason) and I was disappointed by today's NIN announcement and it worries me about Ohana.  To me, a mask is no big deal.  We can disagree on that as long as we agree on what you indicated above.  No hard feelings, I hope.

All good.  No hard feelings at all.

but was Delta at a peak then?  I think that is the issue.  Although I keep hearing that they expect a decrease in cases since it has already pushed a big wave through
I honestly don't know.  It was just a few weeks ago, so I thought it was close enough in time frame to the current situation, but I could be wrong.

Not at all what I meant, but thanks for letting me know that it read that way.  The situation is changing for everyone involved on a daily basis and everyone has the right to decide which risks they are willing to take, and if they change their mind, they should be able to refund or resell their tickets.  Flexibility is key in this situation for all parties involved.  Personally, I get the reaction to the Killers requiring both vax and a negative test because tests are still not as reliable or available as they should be.  To me (my opinion), requiring a mask is not as big a deal.  Is it an inconvenience?  Yes.  Is it a dealbreaker for me attending an event that is important to me?  Nope.
Anyways, sucky day for us NIN fans and anxious moments for us Ohana attendees.  Everyone stay safe and I hope we all get some shows.  Glad I traveled and attended the 5 shows I did in August.

Heard full band version at Fenway 16. Loved it. Enjoy solo too but full band was better.

It is new information.  With the original variant, vaccinated people who were exposed to covid either didn't get sick and didn't spread, OR got a very mild case with a low viral load and thus were UNlikely to spread it to others.

Delta is different in that the viral load carried by a vaccinated person who gets infected can be something like 1000x what it was with the original virus. In other words, vaccinated people who are infected with delta (now the dominant strain in the US) are just as contagious/infectious as unvaccinated people with covid.

Well, the vaccines were stopping the spread until delta became dominant. They're still slowing the spread, because the large majority of vaccinated people who are exposed to delta will not get infected and thus will not spread it further.

Is there any thinking that the decision to forge on will come down to a division between the musical "haves" and "have-not's"?  Bands that can afford (personally) to forego touring for now (another year?) will respond like Neil Young and Trent Reznor.  They will operate with "an abundance of caution" while younger, less established bands will make the decision to stop touring only if they are forced to.  At this point, with the way the music industry is relying less on sales and more on gate receipts + merch, there is a chance that we are going to see a void of young bands who just couldn't get by.
I read an interview with Jason Isbell that talked about it. He said that the Stevie Nicks' of the entertainment world can cancel because they have the money to fall back on. Smaller acts such him don't have that luxury. I have tickets to 3 concerts this Fall: Son Volt, Drive By Truckers and Bob Mould. I would consider all of them smaller acts that rely on touring revenue, (maybe not Bob so much) so it will be interesting to see what they do with their shows.
@JeBurkhardt it sounds like you and I could be friends solely based on your ticket purchasing choices...hope you get to see all three....
    I can only hope.

Beginning October 17th, anyone attending a concert at DMV venues including The Anthem, 9:30 Club, Merriweather Post Pavilion, and Lincoln Theatre will need to provide proof of full vaccination status to enter: cos.lv/lupB30rRxfa

Additional safety considerations come from Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. Guests must wear a mask at all times inside of The Anthem, 9:30 Club, and Lincoln Theatre, unless they are eating or drinking. This rule does not extend to Merriweather Post Pavilion, which is outside and 30 miles away in Maryland.

    Why beginning Oct 17th?
If they believe it is for the best, why wait?
Is this meant to mostly act as motivation to non vaccinated folks to get vaccinated?
How each area rolls out their changes is head scratching.

So yeah I went to a show on July 2nd and I am so glad I did , it was at the point cases were so low and CDC guidance said being inside was ok. I was still a little nervous but had a great time.

Fast forward to a month an a half later , an increase of over 1000% in cases in my area. Fully vaxxed and you are not going to find me at a show.

Without sounding dramatic it just seems to much of a danger , I can understand why bands are pulling out of tours left and right. Most are saying they feel they cannot keep fans safe and that is unfair to their fans.

If a band wants to move on and someone wants to go to a show I am not going to say they are wrong to go at all. Just personally were I fall on this.

We had a chance to get everyone vaccinated and missed that mark so hard. I know much less death right now but numbers are higher than they were last year and I do think this fall / winter is going to suck with it all coming back full force.

  • Daily positivity rate in LA County is down to 3% and Orange County is down to 4%. That's of everyone that is tested. California isn't dealing with what Florida and Tennessee are dealing with. The state is over 70% vaccinated and people are fine with wearing masks here. We're going to see a continual decline in the coming weeks.

To give people who are holding tickets but not vaxxed a chance to schedule and get both shots.

In other words, vaccinated people who are infected with delta (now the dominant strain in the US) are just as contagious/infectious as unvaccinated people with covid.
yes, delta is more contagious. but vaccines have never stopped the spread. it was just poorly worded, in my opinion, on his part.
Of course vaccines were stopping the spread. We had a period of the lowest new cases, lowest hospital admissions, and lowest deaths from Covid a couple of months ago, and hospitals were mostly able to breathe for a moment.  The only major thing that had changed by then was  people getting vaxxed.

Now the Delta variant means being vaxxed is stopping us vaxxed people from getting sick at all or really sick and stopping us from dying of it, but we are now able to spread Delta almost as much as unvaxxed people, so small children & immuno-compromised people are once again especially vulnerable.  And, the confusing masks rules which, honestly knowing there would never be an easy way to tell who was vaxxed or not meant they should not have done away with masks for vaxxed people so quickly.  Open up and start doing events again, but everyone masks still made sense then, and now we're going back to it because we have to.

Wishing everyone the best for this fest and all of them!

All the NIN shows were outdoors (CLE x2 and a bunch of festivals).

Cleveland has a roof but ya still mostly considered outdoors with the sides wide open.

I find these cancelations so odd. We get all of this positive news that vax/neg test only shows are happening safely and bands are still pulling out.
I blame the anti-vaxxers and those who whine about masks. Is it really that hard to wear a fucking mask to protect yourself and your neighbor?! If I asked you (not you specifically @PJNB ) right now “would you wear a mask if it meant you could see Pearl Jam tonight?” would you even hesitate to say “fuck yeah”? If you’d refuse, then just stay home and let the adults enjoy life. Fuck!
To each, their own.  If I'm required to wear a mask at an outdoor show, on top of being vaxed, then I'd easily bow out.

Same...actually I'd just go and not wear it.  Good luck enforcing something like that.

The whole vax vs antivax clearly shows people who peaked in hs, maybe jr high

I won’t say which side peaked (vaxxed or anti) you can figure that one out

@HughFreakingDillon - you are absolutely correct.
The way the vaccine has been promoted has caused this interpretive fogginess.  So many people were lead to believe that the vaccine would keep them from contracting Covid...all along it has been known by the medical community that the vaccine would lessen the symptoms and virtually eliminate deaths for people who caught the virus.  Even with vaccines, the virus will still work its' way through the community...but the rate of death will be greatly reduced.  The reason that "reported" cases slowed is that people who would  test positive were not going to get tested because they didn't feel sick--the vaccine is doing the job for which it is intended.  The Delta variant is a more transmittable version of the virus (3-4 times more contagious).  The reported numbers are going up because it is moving through the population more effectively and efficiently-infecting more people more quickly who pass it along at an ever increasing rate.

Still...people (without comorbidity issues-diabetes, heart disease, obesity and old age primarily) with vaccinations are not dying at a measurable rate.

The good news, if there is any, is that, because of the high transmission rate of the Delta variant, the number of people who are exposed to Covid and have shown little or no effect has increased. While many of those people may not have received the vaccine, they will form the antibodies and be (at least partially) protected from getting or passing the virus along in the future.

If the efficacy of a vaccine isn't clear by the difference in the rate of infection and rate of death between the vaccinated and non-vaccinated to people at this point, I don't know what to say.

I hope my child passes the covid test in 5 weeks and 5 days. My city is exploding right now. Likely, she'll have exposure at camp or school, so it seems like it's just a matter of timing.
