Watched For Whom the Bell Tolls from S&M2 on youtube.

Looks so fucking uninspired. The venue (a regular arena and not a cool, classy concert hall like the first one). The shots of the crowd. The band playing in that round stage setting and walking around. And that the camera-team doesn't seem to really have gone through shooting on a round stage beforehand, so a lot of the shots are messy. And all the ugly shot-in-shot stuff done in editing. Juck.

Looks like a chashgrab. Comes off as uninspired and forgettable as Unforgiven III.
I disagree with everything you just said. Seeing it in theaters was probably a top 10 experience i’ve ever had inside a cinema.

So, if you disagree with... verything... I just said.

You find a random arena to be cooler than a classy concert hall like the first one had?

You do also find the shot-in-shot stuff to be... inspired?

Metallica is such a well run organization.

Got my S&M 2 Vinyl and Bluray in the mail today.  2 days before release date?   When's the last time anyone in Canada got something in the mail before the release date?

    Impressed!

Well Carnegie Hall or Royal Albert Hall would be great, but i’m sure the fanbase has doubled or tripled since 1999. There’s just too much demand these days, so they chose to do two shows at a big arena nearby. There was a ton of energy in that building, you wouldn’t get that in a small theater with a 2000 person capacity.

You probably know a lot more about cinematography than I do, but i thought it was shot fine. I only saw it once last summer. It’s not like Kubrick filming Eyes Wide Shut or something lol. As long as they capture the general feel of what’s going on, that’s all they have to do. Let the musicians on stage do the work and don’t overthink it. It was a good time though surrounded by fellow fans, listening loud with surround sound. It stands out to me more than Lets Play Two does. But we all see it differently ya know.

The only reason these shows happened at all was because the new Chase Center asked Metallica to play at their opening nights. Only then did they think about also making it a 20th anniversary S&M celebration. So it happens at that arena, or not at all.

I think it's fine to do it a bit different this time round, otherwise we might as well just watch the original. I'm a bit biased though, 'cos I was there for night two and it was mind blowing.

Anyone go to the drive-in concert last week? Was wondering how that was.

  • ^Yes. Yes it is.
I would have liked a few less songs that they already played on the S&M, but I get it. I like that they played "All Within My Hands" and that this version really shows what a turd St. Anger was.

Yup you probably are, even I didn't like it and I like experimentation. However, I understand many bands want to try something new, sometimes it works and many times it doesnt.

I thought you meant Kill em All because of the anesthesia comment.  I was really confused there.

I don't hate St. Anger, don't love it either. Probably my second least favorite album from them. I still can't really listen to ReLoad

Anyone watch the Live Stream tonight?  I thought it was really good and quite enjoyed it.   We did a double header with the Metallica webcast followed by the Foo Fighters webcast.  The Metallica one seem so well produced (ie sounded amazing).   The Foo Fighters one didn't sound nearly as good (and it ran a little short).   Metallica wins this day :)

I will say, Metallica seems to run a tight machine.   From their fan club, to their merch, to their livestream.   It's a well oiled machine.

I watched it, thought it was great. Loved that they played “Wasting my Hate”. It was cool to see all the fans on the wall watching and all proceeds for their  charity.

Would be cool to see PJ do this same format for their Vitalogy Foundation, maybe Benaroya style.

Metallica stream was great last night I thought.  Great setlist with deep cuts and reworked songs.  Loved the fan interaction as well, seemed like the band was really loving it.

Finally got around to listening to S&M2. I was actually quite impressed. I didn't think I would be, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Halo on Fire was solid and Master sounded especially solid. Probably helps I haven't listened to S&M in awhile so I didn't compare the 2 and the repeats. Also had no idea there were so many videos and live albums on Nugs that I can access with my regular subscription. Going to be watching some of those in the next few weeks.

Black album turns 30 this year, I’m assuming they’ll do the big box set reissue that they’ve been doing for the other albums. Anybody hearing anything on this yet?
