IMO, best song on the album and stands against some of the great ones Ed has ever written. Cuts so deep and powerfully.

This part just rips me apart every time:

Where you been? Can I find
    A glimpse of my friend
Don't know where or when one of us left
    The other behind
    Divisions came and troubles multiplied
Incisions made by scalpel blades of time

Agreed would be surprised if it is played live much which is a shame because it is so beautiful.

I have to agree. Up there with the classics. Such amazing lyrics. People say it’s too long? What?!

We need an Ed tour soon too. This song is way too good not to be played regularly.

Great but might be the saddest pj song ever. Can hear the hurt in Ed’s voice.  The “I’m trying” and the “sadness comes and some of it was mine”...so gets to me

It's beyond perfect.   I seriously listen multiple times a day.

Anyone else feel this was written with Chris in mind? There even appears to be a verse directed towards Vicki?  Either way it’s an amazing song and I also like The Who reference. Great Album.
100% written for Chris. And I do believe the last verse is about Vicky:

    "High or low, try again
    She fell off the altar
A vision you caught her but then
    A woodcut in red
I wish it was not you that she had led
    Selfish navigation with no end
Where'd you sleep? Can I find
    A deeper connection
In the face of rejection I'm trying
    I'm trying
Evidence in the echoes of your mind
Leads me to believe we missed the signs
Can I try one last time?
Could all use a savior from human behavior sometimes
    And the kids are alright
The Queen of Collections took your time
Sadness comes 'cause some of it was mine"
I don't know a lot about Chris, what's the song referring to and who is Vicky? His wife?
I have to assume addiction or death. Both of which are commonly interpreted as a seductress of sorts.

Vicky is Chris’s widow. She has “history” with Eddie and the remaining members of Soundgarden since Chris’s death which would lead people to believe there is a strain in her relationship with them. I won’t go into on here but let’s just say she’s not afraid to vent on her social media account.

In my top 3 or 4 on the album. Tragically beautiful. Some of Ed’s best work! And that guitar is simply amazing.

I don't think there is any question at all this is about Chris Cornell.  That being said, I don't think we will likely ever hear the man say, this song is for my friend Chris Cornell.  It is vague enough to not be clear enough, and yet spot on.

I'm late to this conversation, I know. But I have been listening to this song a lot lately, and came to this same conclusion. Just came here to see if I was mistaken, and I see that I'm not alone. The lyrics are heartbreaking, haunting and beautiful. Definitely one of my favorites.
And the sun it may be shining . . . but there's an ocean in my eyes

It’s 100% about Chris. Lots of CC fans like quoting certain lines from this song when discussing certain CC topics. They know it’s about him.

It’s a beautiful, heart wrenching song.

Never really cared for this song in the context of the wider album - it feels overlong and slows the flow down to a crawl. But having listened to it in isolation a few times it has really struck me how good this song is - and how superb the lyrics are. I'd always thought it needed to lose a verse / chorus, but you can't lose any of these words... right up there with Ed's best. And yes very clearly about CC (and VC) to me.

Glad you circled back and discovered more. I love how its placed on Gigaton honestly. It makes the record very well rounded.

It  is an amazing song that has always struck an emotional chord with me when I listen to it. I wish they would have played it live, but with it seemingly being a very personal song, I can see why they might not. Maybe one day and hopefully at a show I am at.

Trust your first instincts.  As a long time live song album completist, this is one song I am fine never hearing live.   Snooze fest to the max.

Not going to argue the lyrics.  They are personal to Eddie.  Musically, the song does nothing for me.

This has to be one of the saddest songs Ed’s ever written. I just love it!
