Anyone else feel this was written with Chris in mind? There even appears to be a verse directed towards Vicki?  Either way it’s an amazing song and I also like The Who reference. Great Album.
100% written for Chris. And I do believe the last verse is about Vicky:

    "High or low, try again
    She fell off the altar
A vision you caught her but then
    A woodcut in red
I wish it was not you that she had led
    Selfish navigation with no end
Where'd you sleep? Can I find
    A deeper connection
In the face of rejection I'm trying
    I'm trying
Evidence in the echoes of your mind
Leads me to believe we missed the signs
Can I try one last time?
Could all use a savior from human behavior sometimes
    And the kids are alright
The Queen of Collections took your time
Sadness comes 'cause some of it was mine"
Queen of Collections would be the Grim Reaper.
agree; i think the "she" in the song is the allusive death, who Ed personified as a woman. i know there are rumors about ed's relationship with vicki, but i don't think ed is the type of person to throw shade at anyone, let alone in a tribute song to the man he saw as an older brother.
Normally I would agree with you. It would seem very out of character for him to call someone out personally like that. But I’m not so sure in this instance. There are so many pictures/videos/stories that clearly show how inseparable Ed and Chris were. If one individual ruined all of that singlehandedly I could see him being pissed off enough to act out of character. Everyone reaches their breaking point eventually. Especially considering the tragedy that followed, eliminating any chance of reconciliation.

Im still not convinced that he’s talking about her, but I’m certainly not convinced that he isn’t, either.

I hear the melody of Doesn't Remind Me at the beginning and end....  it is a magnificent song and a beautiful tribute. Incredibly moving and personal.

It pretty much has to be about Chris .. and even if it's not, my interpretation is it's about losing touch with a friendship and always taking for granted you'll have that moment to re-connect, until that person leaves the earth and you no longer can.

It's sort of the sad, cautionary conclusion to Off He Goes. Just a heart-wrenching song.

Correct. But not necessarily the same "she" mentioned earlier in the song.

I know many were, lets just say, not happy with the fact that Chris was buried in LA at "Hollywood Forever Cemetery", instead of Seattle...

I thought I remember reading that he wasn't actually buried there, it's just a memorial headstone at that site in LA. Maybe I'm wrong?

Love this song. For some reason when I first heard it I thought it sounded like Blues Run the Game by Jackson Frank (which is an amazing song) - but then I listened to Blues Run the Game right after I listened to Comes Then Goes and realized they don't sound the same at all :)

I wish they had left Ed's part just the way it was, and added full band instrumentation behind it... Jeff's grooves, simple drum beat, nice bluesy type solo/Mike work in the background, accompanying Stone Riff... I think this could have been like a Black, Gone, Come Back, etc, something in that vein, still really like the song, was hoping for more depth to it with the full band!

    awesome! thanks for that
  • I am as sure as I can be that it is about Chris, and equally sure that the references to "she" is about death / depression / drugs, not about a specific person.

Also, when I heard the lyric "like images of angels in the snow...", my mind immediately went to this Instagram post.

This is such an awesome song: beautiful and powerful, the guitar work is so strong, and the lyrics are emotional and provocative.  Fucking love this song.

I believe a lot of it is written about her. The she in this song is not death. All the lyrics reveal the subject. I think another telling lyric is...could all use a savior from human behavior and the kids are alright.
I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.

“Evidence in the echoes of your mind
Leads me to believe we missed the signs.”

I see this as lamenting (Chris) or a suicidal friend and missing the signs or cries for help.

”Can I try one last time? Could all use a savior from human behavior”  Once again lamenting missing the signs and not being there (in Detroit) for his friend
    .
The Kids are alright refers to both The Who and the two girls and son left behind.

The line I am not sure is the “woodcut in red”. Maybe a reference to VC in some way.

This song is such a perfect example of Eddie as a lyricist...and I think the beauty and sadness of this song is an example of why Pearl Jam songs just encapsulate me more than any other band ever has

Just realizing this morning, this morning makes me think of The Believer by Rhett Miller... He wrote the song the morning after Elliott Smith lost his life.

This is fast becoming one of my favourites, and possibly my favourite Ed solo song - the lyrics are incredible and absolutely heart breaking.
