I am as sure as I can be that it is about Chris, and equally sure that the references to "she" is about death / depression / drugs, not about a specific person.
Also, when I heard the lyric "like images of angels in the snow...", my mind immediately went to this Instagram post.

This is such an awesome song: beautiful and powerful, the guitar work is so strong, and the lyrics are emotional and provocative. Fucking love this song.

Anyone else feel this was written with Chris in mind? There even appears to be a verse directed towards Vicki? Either way it’s an amazing song and I also like The Who reference. Great Album.
100% written for Chris. And I do believe the last verse is about Vicky:
"High or low, try again She fell off the altar A vision you caught her but then A woodcut in red I wish it was not you that she had led Selfish navigation with no end Where'd you sleep? Can I find A deeper connection In the face of rejection I'm trying I'm trying Evidence in the echoes of your mind Leads me to believe we missed the signs Can I try one last time? Could all use a savior from human behavior sometimes And the kids are alright The Queen of Collections took your time Sadness comes 'cause some of it was mine"
I believe a lot of it is written about her. The she in this song is not death. All the lyrics reveal the subject. I think another telling lyric is...could all use a savior from human behavior and the kids are alright.
I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.
“Evidence in the echoes of your mind Leads me to believe we missed the signs.”
I see this as lamenting (Chris) or a suicidal friend and missing the signs or cries for help.
”Can I try one last time? Could all use a savior from human behavior” Once again lamenting missing the signs and not being there (in Detroit) for his friend . The Kids are alright refers to both The Who and the two girls and son left behind.
The line I am not sure is the “woodcut in red”. Maybe a reference to VC in some way.

This song is such a perfect example of Eddie as a lyricist...and I think the beauty and sadness of this song is an example of why Pearl Jam songs just encapsulate me more than any other band ever has
Just realizing this morning, this morning makes me think of The Believer by Rhett Miller... He wrote the song the morning after Elliott Smith lost his life.

This song gives me chills much like Release does. It scares me how good it is and makes you stop in your tracks to focus on it. Lyrics are beautiful and haunting. I probably won’t be going a day without listening to this one for the next year or so at least.

A really lovely song with intriguing lyrics. My one negative comment is that I think it’s a little too long. Could have dropped a verse out..less is more...to be fair though I personally like slower paced songs to be shorter, so this just may be my bias.
I love this song so much. One of my new favorites for sure. If I'm nit-picking, I think it should end (at least lyrically) on "some of it was mine." I think it would be powerful if the song ended with that hanging in the air. I could see maybe some sort of musical outro if anything. I don't think the final chorus needs to be repeated.
But hey ... it's all vivisection in the end.

I’m now inclined to interpret “Woodcut in red” as everything she touches is hurt and bloodied, like the woodcut stamp but in blood. Or it could be she is fake, like everything is just stamped out over and over without feeling.

I hear A. Wood cut in red...
I agree. Ed is always more subtle. This is a classic EV double entendre... Andrew Wood & a red type print...

Whats a wood cut, as in red type print? I dont get the context to the song...
My favorite track at this point. Maybe this is just me but the comparisons to other artists or other PJ songs is a little annoying. "This is the new Black." "This has a very Thin Air feel to it." "This song is very Springsteen inspired". "This has Neil young written all over it" Why can't it just be new PJ?
Like a word misplaced...nothing said...what a waste

I think it may be that the band has never put out an album with such obvious nods to certain influences.
This song, had it been written in 1995, would be considered a classic. It’s a perfect Ed solo acoustic song.

I agree 100% and have been saying the same thing. Let these songs breathe and be their own. They are new original songs that sound like Pearl Jam!
I've been wondering about the woodcut in red bit for a few days... and somehow came to the conclusion that it refers to a stamp like on a contract. She fell off the altar A vision You caught her but then... (He saved her from being disgraced) If you know a bit about how Chris was trapped into his second marriage with a visibly-pregnant bride. Well, such a tragedy. Would some love be best had it not appeared indeed.
This song is just so great...haunting and I can't stop listening especially in these times at home. When Eddie's voice changes or cracks a bit when he says, "I'm Trying..."....damn.
