So far the coronavirus has cost me 3 Pearl Jam concerts With friends and family and a ncaa tournament trip with my dad. Not to mention a spring break girls trip for my wife and daughter. And a few other big deals for my family I don’t care to mention specifically.

im concerned about the health of a few specific people close to me. And sad for those who have been effected in the most awful way.  This is just all bad. And no joke, the world needs to figure out how to hold China accountable for their continued nonsense
Stop buying Chinese products. And sorry for your losses, travel expense wise. Hope you’re not out dollars. It sucks but this too shall pass, hopefully.

Damn right they should. Did you watch this video someone posted last night? There’s some communities in China that are pretty much incapable of NOT spreading diseases/viruses

Yeah, not panicked but definitely concerned on many levels.

Personally, my health is below snuff and while I'm within walking distance of my hospital/doctor, I imagine it, like most hospitals, are swamped moreso than usual.  All I can do is take precautions and hope my mom (89) and husband (two lung surgeries) do the same.

    Thanks all for answering.

Kind of hard to believe we don't have anyone freaking out and that is good.

I have a very sick Aunt in the hospital whom I go see but am afraid to get close because I travel frequently into the city.  I've been using the purell stations and using the 6' rule.

Good luck with your aunt. I might have a family member who could be at higher risk but it’s tough to know for sure.

with a lot of things shutting down today- NCAAs, St Patty’s Parade, SUNY & CUNY schools, maybe it’s time to shut all the schools down and all the sports leagues. Why are the kids going to school if major things are shutting down? Seems risky now for any school superintendent to keep the districts open in light of this.

It seems like things are about to get very weird.

A few people have said better to get it sooner than later. I thought the same. I'm low risk. I could travel. However, the catch phrase this afternoon is FLATTEN THE CURVE. This means I should postpone my trip so I don't expose my community when I return. Also, good advice I got here today on the forum was later might be better if meds are made to prevent illness graduating to pneumonia.

I prepared with travel N95 respirators and Clorax wipes for the airplane. I have enough food, soap, bleach and tp to sustain 14 days at home. I also have hand sanitizer for the car.

Not panicking: preparing and making educated decisions.

Wait so this isn’t Trumps fault?

The US system is under the gun, and clearly the administration is doing everything it can to minimize. Our overly complex system, rules for denying care, can come back and bite anyone in power who defends the status quo. If fatalities get bad in the US (and geez, shouldn’t it already be), stories like the below will be prominent after the fact. Turning away potential victims. And even if 80% of this virus is mild and undetectable, it’s still much much deadlier than the flu:

” Matt McNamara, 46, was concerned when he developed a sore throat, cough and fever last Friday.

“Those were the three things that were markers for me to say this is definitely different,” he told Yahoo News.

McNamara is a field operations manager at Spectrum and drives for Uber on weekends, so he was concerned about showing up to work sick and possibly infecting others. After going to Adirondack Urgent Care in Queensbury, N.Y., he tested negative for seasonal influenza and was told he had an unknown virus before being sent home.

But after reading that a pharmacist at a local CVS where he shops had tested positive for COVID-19, McNamara wondered why he hadn’t been tested for coronavirus himself and decided to follow up with the urgent care unit.

The frustrating response he received gives an insight into the experience of many Americans who are seeking the tests, which continue to be in limited supply despite reassurances from the Trump administration.

“They said, ‘Well, we didn’t test you because, No. 1, we don’t test for it here. You’d have to go somewhere else,’” McNamara recounted. “‘But we didn’t recommend any testing because you did not meet the CDC’s criteria of having traveled outside the country to a known nation or place that has it, and you also have not been in contact with anybody who has it.’”

Still concerned, McNamara said he followed up with the Warren County Health Services. But they also told him he did not meet the CDC’s criteria for testing.

J'nelle Oxford, public health program coordinator at Warren County Health Services, told Yahoo News, “It's still cold and virus season,” and symptoms of coronavirus alone are currently not grounds for coronavirus testing. She said they are still prioritizing those who are “high risk” and “high exposure,” including those who had been to a country with a level 2 or level 3 travel health noticeor in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with coronavirus.

That gets right to the heart of Trump's response to any issue. It all goes back to the market. This should be approached as a public health emergency, not an economic problem. Sure, the economy will suffer because of this, but if we don't address the underlying public health crisis, then nothing will help on the economic side of things. The problem is that he can fudge numbers on the economy, and he can make excuses for politics. But the death toll doesn't lie.
Also curious, speaking of scientists and specialists, is that the coronavirus response in the WH is classified. Many of our experts and scientists have been excluded from meetings because they don't have the proper security clearances.

Exclusive: White House told federal health agency to classify coronavirus deliberations - sources

    From the Reuters article:

The officials said that dozens of classified discussions about such topics as the scope of infections, quarantines and travel restrictions have been held since mid-January in a high-security meeting room at the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), a key player in the fight against the coronavirus.

Staffers without security clearances, including government experts, were excluded from the interagency meetings, which included video conference calls, the sources said.

“We had some very critical people who did not have security clearances who could not go,” one official said. “These should not be classified meetings. It was unnecessary.”

The sources said the National Security Council (NSC), which advises the president on security issues, ordered the classification.”This came directly from the White House,” one official said.

The White House insistence on secrecy at the nation’s premier public health organization, which has not been previously disclosed, has put a lid on certain information - and potentially delayed the response to the crisis. COVID19, the disease caused by the virus, has killed about 30 people in the United States and infected more than 1,000 people.

Yeah I sure about the $, but it’s not really about that. It was the times ahead with friends from far away and family that I don’t get to see enough and are aging. But it is what it is, just a bummer. Other have it worse right now I know. I hope this is all it is for me and my family and friends, though I’m concerned

Yes. I had four shows booked and at each I was going to see a different group of friends. That’s all gone now, though with any luck just temporarily. In an immediate sense, I’m more concerned about my parents and my aunt and uncle, all in their 80s, but then it extends out to my community, and beyond. So many places in the world are far less equipped to deal with this than my province.

I'm waiting to see if Europe is next to be travel-banned when Trump addresses us all in a few minutes.

Edit: There was some news grumbling that China is almost ready for travel, so I'm guessing this potential move wouldn't be a Euro Tour killer.

30 day restrictions to Europe starting Friday. Not UK.
