Better a tainted green, than a greened taint.
Doesn’t the former lead to the latter?

By the end of this month, I would estimate based on the most recent CDC summary that the flu will have killed close to 10,000 people during the 2019-20 season and we have a lot of winter left in the northern hemisphere.   But news panic is always good.   It is the job of WHO and CDC do monitor, assess and prescribe action on all types of virus.   But this is not going to become a movie.
Agreed. I'm actually more concerned with the flu, as it is much more prevalent.
2019 - 2020 stats to date from the CDC for the US:
    15,000,000 - 21,000,000 Flu illnesses
    7,000,000 - 10,000,000 Flu medical visits 1
    40,000 - 250,000 Flu hospitalizations
    8,200 - 20,000 Flu deaths
So, right now Coronavirus is at 2% mortality and the flu in your stats is .1%.    Granted access to healthcare may be better in the US than China, but this is worse than the flu.

I think what Jeff is getting at is that even though the mortality rate of the corona virus is twice that of flue, because there are so many cases of flu, your chances of dying of flu is higher than your chances of dying of the corona virus.

But remember, flue and pneumonia combined are #8 in this list of 10 things that kill most Americans (heart disease and cancer way outnumber flu):

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”

Lol.Enjoying that cartoonist do reveal a lot about a person.

Very charming. Have you owned up to your weird lies about Greta and her mom yet? Or you just keep moving on with your blindfolds on, just like the daft cartoonist you enjoy seemto do?
Glad you find them charming...thought a laugh would be helpful, especially for some of the angry all the time folks....

and SARS had a 10% fatality rate, much more deadly than corona

But the coronavirus is much more transmissible.  Bad news, especially in Asia.  It will be interesting to see if the quarantine effectively squashes the virus.
  • Does anyone think this euro tour will get cancelled because of this now its in major cities

My worries were extinguished about travel on a Spring Break cruise and travel to LollaParis on a different thread. (Although, I will pack more than normal amounts of meds/tylenol. I hope it is not cancelled, as I often don't purchase travel insurance, having the attitude of 'buy the ticket, take the ride!')

What worried me, recently, is a Chinese imported item I received in the mail.

At the end of last year, I experienced fraud from a FB link to Shopify (although PayPal returned the money from a US account). This week, I received an small token item mailed from Henan (sent to generate a fraudulent shipping label). That province is next to Hubei, where a hospital is being built. I have to tell you, I treated the fraudulent package as if it was toxic waste! Talk about hand washing and fear!

i thought they have said that it's only transmissable from host to host, can't live on other surfaces. no?

It is believed to be spread mainly through droplets, such as from the mucus or saliva of an infected person who sneezes or coughs.

Infectious diseases expert Leong Hoe Nam said the virus is likely to die when the droplets dry up.

Experts say if the virus could really survive even after the droplets carrying it have dried up, it would have spread through the air as dust particles and potentially infected 10 times more people, which is not the case.

Last week, a Shanghai official, Mr Zeng Qun, said the virus could spread through aerosol transmission, or the mixing of the virus with airborne liquid droplets.

This would allow the virus to linger in the air and infect those who inhale it, he said. Diseases that are known to spread this way include tuberculosis, chicken pox and measles

    Darwinspeed, all.

    Cheers,

    HFD

I'd be so pissed if they cancelled Lollaparis! Now, I just have to decide which outfit is for Billie Eilish show and which one screams Pearl Jam...

Edit: Not a big fan... never gave Mr. Young's music a shot.

I think we should listen to someone omniscient and benevolent who will put all our fears to rest.  Someone, say, like...

We are in Angkor Wat Cambodia now, was in Hanoi last week.  Neither of these places have many confirmed cases.....However,  the locals are very wigged out by this whole ordeal..75% of the people wearing masks that are being given out for free on street corners..... Luckily for the travelers in these 2 countries they have locked down the borders 2 week ago not allowing any Chinese people in or anyone that has been through China in the last few months.  It’s been a challenge for some travelers, but the ones that got to their destination have had the resorts and sights all to themselves.  Our tour guide today in Angkor Wat told us today that we are lucky since Places like Angkor Wat have been overrun by the Chinese  In the past 5-10 years and she has never in her life seen this place deserted like it was today....It was quite special having this sacred ground all to ourselves and quiet.  However it sure has been a HUGE hit to Tourism in the countries that are essentially owned by China....

Well of course because it's a silver lining.

Also, 1 million Chinese people die prematurely due to pollution.  Who knows how many in surrounding countries and how many globally due to climate change.

Not as scary as a bug and we need our stuff.
