So how does everyone feel about closing the borders? I mean specifically in shipping and also international travel?
So how does everyone feel about martial law? I mean specifically suspending elections until this whole thing has blown over?
Are you implying that those are the same?
trial balloon kite-flying slippery slope
whatever you want to call it
So just so I"m clear, if the corona was ravaging the world, you would be against the US stopping international travel. And that's true even if Obama or Sanders were president?
Just so we're clear, Corona has been ravaging the world for far too long, but that's another discussion.
international travel : coronavirus :: border wall : immigrants
Open borders and international cooperation. Not isolationism or protectionism.
So no, under no circumstances would you support the US stopping int'l travel, regardless of the president. Correct?
If I was cynical, I'd think you were comparing immigrants to a virus. I can easily draw a distinction between these two unrelated topics.
It's a valid analogy. By no means am I calling immigrants an infection. I welcome immigrants with open arms. Let's be clear about that.
I'm comparing stopping int'l travel to building a border wall. Both are useless. Closing the barn door, if you will.
We can patrol the border, close all the airports, and seaports. But the US can't stop international travel anymore than they can stop an airborne virus from spreading.
Okay, I can certainly agree that the wall is ineffective and I can agree that closing the borders may also be ineffective. I'm not 100% sure on the latter because it's not something we've done in modern times. I do know that Japan has closed its public schools and other countries are taking extreme measures. I don't think that taking some of those measures is akin to or leading up to martial law.
So I listened to an immunologist who won a Pulitzer for her reporting on Ebola describe the issue with Team Trump Treason's response. Basically, she compared how the Chinese have dealt with it thus far and how the US would struggle, mostly quarantining and preventing freedom of movement (wouldn't happen here). She also described how the influenza pandemic had a death rate of 1.9% and that the coronavirus death rate is about 2.0%, if you are to believe the reporting out of China, where the death rate may be closer to 6%. This is where Team trump Treason's leadership, if you think he has any, fails. He should be demanding that China allow WHO and European and US medical experts in to study, learn and assist with addressing so that the world has a much better understanding of the nature of the threat and how best to address it. Its not happening (gee wonder why, burned every bridge with allies and potential allies). She also spoke to the virus, apparently it goes deep into the lungs. The issue then becomes patients needing ventilation. There's only so much capacity to treat patients who need it. What happens to those who need it and its not available? Is it even being discussed by Team Trump Treason and Pence? The previous administration's czar for this type of thing and their team, born out of the Ebola and SARS threats, were disbanded and defunded. Thanks Team Trump Treason. So the issue is going to become, containment and treatment and how to keep everything running during a quarantine. If you're not nervous, you should be. Particularly with who is at the helm. Hey, but the weather and prayers.
I have also heard this. Again, I recommend everyone listen to that NYT Daily podcast from this morning.
Was thinking about it, probably better to get the virus early in the epidemic so you have a chance of getting good care if it goes bad. If it gets as bad as some say it could, there won't be the resources to help you in the middle of the pandemic. If those things even help you, which there is evidence that it doesn't.
In 2011, as a member of Congress, he voted to cut funding for Planned Parenthood. Two years later, a Planned Parenthood clinic that had been the only HIV-testing center in Scott County, Ind., closed after public health spending cuts, HuffPost reported.
“I don’t believe effective anti-drug policy involves handing out drug paraphernalia,” he told the Indianapolis Star at the time. Despite assurances from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that it is an effective way to halt the spread of infections and diseases such as HIV and hepatitis B and C, Pence said if state lawmakers tried to send him a bill for a needle-exchange program, he would veto it.

Stock market had its worst one day drop in history today. Sure am glad Team Trump Treason stepped to the podium last night and reassured the nation. Not. A. Fucking. Clue. Suckers.

Ha. I know! There were articles about how terrible and non reassuring the presser was for the markets.
The workers did not show symptoms of infection and were not tested for the virus, according to lawyers for the whistleblower, who is a senior HHS official based in Washington who oversees workers at the Administration for Children and Families, a unit within HHS.
The whistleblower is seeking federal protection because she alleges she was unfairly and improperly reassigned after raising concerns about the safety of these workers to HHS officials, including those within the office of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. She was told Feb. 19 that if she does not accept the new position in 15 days, which is March 5, she would be terminated.
The whistleblower has decades of experience in the field, received two HHS department awards from Azar last year, and has received the highest performance evaluations, her lawyers said.
The complaint was filed Wednesday with the Office of the Special Counsel, an independent federal watchdog agency. The whistleblower’s lawyers provided a copy of a redacted 24-page complaint to The Washington Post. A spokesman for the Office of the Special Counsel said he could not comment on complaints filed with the office.
The complaint alleges that HHS staff were “improperly deployed” and were “not properly trained or equipped to operate in a public health emergency situation.” The complaint also alleges that the workers were potentially exposed to coronavirus because appropriate steps were not taken to protect them, and staff were not trained in wearing personal protective equipment, even though they had face-to-face contact with returning passengers. The workers were in contact with passengers in an airplane hangar where evacuees were received and on two other occasions: when they helped distribute keys for room assignments and hand out colored ribbons for identification purposes.
About 14 personnel from the Administration for Children and Families, or ACF, were sent to March Air Force base in Riverside County, California, and another team of about 13 ACF personnel were sent to Travis Air Force in Fairfield, California, according to the complaint and the whistleblower’s lawyer, Ari Wilkenfeld. Several people within HHS voiced objection to sending the ACF personnel to receive passengers, according to a person familiar with the conversations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations.
After their deployments, the workers returned to their normal duties, some taking commercial airline flights to return to their offices around the country, the lawyers said.
fear seems to be spreading much faster at this point, at least in the US.
Ain't it the truth! Not that we should brush it off as no big deal, but I wonder how many will die of stress related illness over this rather than the virus itself?
The world is a polluted mess, climate change can be slowed but will have major effects regardless, the oceans are full of plastic, we're in the midst of a massive extinction event, and Trump is president, so yes, some stress is inevitable. My way of dealing with all this to do what I reasonably can to make a positive difference, hold the door for everyone, take my vitamins and supplements and eat reasonable well, and enjoy the good things in life at every chance.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Is there a book out there called "How not to do something".... cause I feel like trump has read this book.
Why us it always such a cluster...you would think he would get something right at some point. You would think the market reaction would have him OVER compensate on this.

You still holding out hope?
If by hope you mean that somehow we will have a decent response? Yes. Confidence is different than hope.

Are you serious with the “yes”? I mean people are dying. Or is this just finding the silver lining to a bad situation?
silver lining : I just scooped up a bunch of int'l stocks on discount this morning
buybuybuy
Hope you held off on the buybuybuy.
like catching a falling knife
bought more each day this week
yes my portfolio is down a touch, but not nearly as bad as the rest of the market
Good to hear your not taking too much of a beating.
I'm thinking about investing myself, just don't know when to jump in. I suspect it's going to get worse yet.
I think it still has some downward action in it. And that's before an actual recession hits (although this could very well be the catalyst). End of the day, unless you need the money in 5 years or less, no reason to sit on the sidelines too long.
*edit - oh man, 900 points down already today. Trump must be shitting his whoppers.

As Pence takes the lead on coronavirus, critics recall his response to Indiana HIV outbreak

Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services sent more than a dozen workers to receive the first Americans evacuated from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, without proper training for infection control or appropriate protective gear, according to a whistleblower complaint.
