When jack white did this in houston, it made the show so much better.  Getting the phones out of the bag was seamless and didn’t require any waiting.   That said, it makes it difficult for people to attend under circumstances.  Imagine if your spouse is pregnant or you have a sick relative.  I was able to do it, but had the show been two months earlier (while my wife was pregnant) I wouldn’t have been able to attend.  One of my friends wasn’t able to attend because he needed to be able to access his phone due to a relative with health issues.  Other people may have work issues.

In short, I love the idea in theory, but in reality it can have some unintended consequences for people attending.  (Yes, you can easily unlock phone, but it’s not feasible to go to lobby and check it every 10 minutes).

But what did people do about those situations in 1985 when they saw Def Leppard or Quiet Riot?
Exactly. We've evolved to a point where everything/one must be "immediate." For better or worse, this is how it is and likely will be.

Instant gratification for everyone....in the 70s and 80s life was so much easier without the NOW NOW NOW of the cell phone

Danzig had a very strict no picture/video policy, at least a few years ago. Found out first hand. I was a little on the drunk side and had completely missed the signage at the venue, but security busted me snapping a quick photo with my phone. After a bit of negotiation, I agreed to delete the photo from my phone and was allowed to stay in the venue. Anyways, it turned out to be a great night.

Neko Case also has a very strict no photo policy as well. I’ve seen her numerous times solo and with the Pornographers, and I’ve seen numerous people escorted out of the building.

Prince was another one that didn’t fuck around with people taking photos/videos. When he held dance parties and small concerts at Paisley Park it was very explicitly advised to leave phones at home. Security searched everyone and would straight up confiscate phones till the end of the night or remove the offender from the property.

My husband is very excited about The Raconteurs concert because of the cell phone ban.  Of course, I was the idiot who forgot about that and chose mobile tickets, so Yondr bag I go.

  • As an aside....I left my phone at work one afternoon and didn't have it for a whole two days....seriously---two days--48 hours.  Once I got past the "what if I break down on the side of the road or get a flat" concern, I found it to be exhilarating.  Like I was living life in a combination of on the edge and off the grid.  Once I got over being repeatedly called an idiot by my wife and kids, I realized that one time we lived without cellphones and, despite the effects of evolution on our brains in the intervening years since they were invented, we can go (for a short time) without them.  Having said that....it was nice to get my hands on it again.

A friend of mine knocked mine out of my hand last year and I went a week without it while I ordered a new screen & digitizer.  If I absolutely needed to call or text anyone, could still do so from my iMac which I still didn't.  It was a fun week.  Got all kinds of shit done around the house.

My daughter has poor vision and at times I will hold the phone below/ to the side of the person in front of us for a few minutes so she can get a decent view.

Let's ban polite and limited (and potentially important, for disabled attendees) phone use on the actions of immature adolescents that venues have no ability to deal with.

    Makes perfect sense.

I don't agree with banning phones (it's not practical between e-tickets, ride share apps, etc.) - but just don't be this guy and film the entire show........

I'm a Lumix filmer, as many of you can probably guess, but my rule is I never lift it higher than my head.  I also screw it to the top of my poster tube and hold it in front of me.  If you hold it in front of your head, you are not blocking anyone that isn't already blocked due to your melon.

I've been to a show where they banned phones by using those locking bag things that you put your phone in while you enter, so e-tickets weren't an issue, and where you can go to a number of stations out where the concessions are to unlock them if you need to use your phone. It worked just fine and was completely practical. This was in a 17,000 seat arena with a full open floor. It went smoothly.

I wouldn't have an issue with that - it's the obstructing other peoples' view for extended periods of time.  I'm all for capturing the show for personal and shareable enjoyment - I've done it, too.  I wouldn't want to be without my phone - but when you get stuck behind someone like this, I see why people start to feel passionately about banning phones and cameras.

  • I like having some kind of record of shows I went to.  But it’s a pain and distraction (also for myself) to take video clips during the show.  Bands which release official bootlegs completely killed the desire to record audio of the show - why make crappy audience recodings if you can get a soundboard recording for little money?  So it seems to me a lot of the mobile phone use would be eliminated if they would release video recordings too - there are already cameras filming for the large screens, so why not record it and sell it for little after the show?  No one would bother filming with their cameras if they could get a high quality keepsakes from the band.  Then people could go back to enjoying the show with their two eyes and two ears...

It'll be interesting if that's the next wave.  I would love it.  Bruce, Phish, Metallica and more release every show now.  Some of them are within a day or two.  Obviously there's not much mixing happening, but still, I think it's great that they've got on the bandwagon.  If the pro shot really was released, that would be a huge win for the fans.
And audio boots are definitely dying out.  The only time I've worked with one in the last several years was for Temple Philly 1 and that's just because of the historic nature of the show.  Nothing would make me happier than an official audio release from any of those shows.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Jack White show last year with the no phone policy. It was refreshing.

I don't know why so many people care that other people are staring at their phone instead of watching the show.  I would honestly much prefer banning alcohol.  I have seen plenty of drunk bully people, but never saw someone get pushed around by a cellphone.

It seems Rock & Roll, the music of youth and rebellion has fully become nothing more than dad music with old men yelling at kids to put their phone away.

More like preferring people not be assholes about it.  Not a fan of "I want this and it'll affect your experience, so fuck you."

Then lets please ban everything that negatively affects your experience, the assholes that get to drunk, I am sure a lot of people hate the smell of pot.

I don't care about people using their phones at a show, texting, reading stuff, checking scores, etc. I do care about them holding it up right in my line of sight non stop for an hour and a half or more.  And I have seen plenty of people act like assholes when others ask them to put their phones down.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned that I would rather watch the band through my eyes rather than through someones  phone screen.

So you think the people in front of you in the cinema should talk all through the film, to show that you are not a snowflake or need a safe place?

Yep that's what I think and what I said.  However, I also believe one should be able to donkey punch the person in front of you when they do so.  And yes, I believe in gratuitous violence at all times.  I also hate puppies.  Let me know if you have any other stupid questions I can answer for you.

There is a lot of truth to this. People who are obnoxious with their cell phones are going to be obnoxious in other ways. Banning the phones isn't going to change that.

Be courteous to the people around you and let other people enjoy the show in their own way. If someone is blocking your view with a phone, that's one thing. But if it bothers you that someone three rows over is on their phone, then that is something else.

Use your damn phone if you must, BUT KEEP IT OUT OF OUR LINE OF SIGHT!! You aren't so f'ing important making a shitty video from the seats that you can put on You Tube and "impress your friends"......So I think most of us agree ....keep phones down.
