They're going to ban Smartphone use at shows

So I went to a show recently... and was saddened by how many people spend their time trying to take pictures or video on their smartphone. Yet their success rate is close to zero.

It's usually the technologically challenged who are zooming way too far in and getting nothing but a blur.

What's the point?? Put down your phone and enjoy the show.

Your shitty video with horrendous audio really isn't worth me having to look around your stupid 8 inch screen.

Thoughts??

I dont think they'll be able to ban them, but I agree with you. its sucks to have to look around the dozen people holding their phones up in the air. We just need to keep telling people -- Just please stop people... or just get one quick shot and put it away and respect all the folks behind you.

Phones were banned at Eddie's two shows in Clearwater and to be honest it took away from both evenings. I don't mind the phones and am able to tune them out pretty effectively. I was not able to tune out ushers and security guards swooping in repeatedly to threaten people who had their phones out. It really went overboard in my opinion.

Plus...I love shitty youtube videos. :D

How do you ban smartphones? Everyone has one in their pocket now. They're worth about 300 - 600 dollars each. Good luck trying to get all those people streaming through the gates to toss their phone in some kind of bin.

I can't see the logistics of banning something that a large percentage of the population will have in their pocket when entering the show.

Roger Waters had a funny quote in an interview about a year ago. The interviewer asked him how crowds have changed since the original 1979 Wall tour. Roger said "I'll tell ya how they have changed. THEY ALL HAVING FUCKING CELL PHONES OR CAMERAS OUT! I love this song! It's so good I have to send it to Pedro!"

Maybe you should take your own advice. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and enjoy the show.

Actually, I don't. No one fully experiences a fantastic concert behind a screen. Focusing on getting the best picture or video completely takes away the energy of fully experiencing the energy of a show. I'd rather go home elated by the rush of fully being free and in the moment of a fantastic show over going home knowing that I got a few good pics ANY DAY.

I wish artists would tell the audience (with signage in venue and pre-show from the mic) that the first X number of songs are ok for pics/videos, but then to put them away. I think that would appease a large portion of fans who want some pics/vids as a memory of the event and then they'd put it away. I would.

Snap away for the first 2 songs and then you're done.

You'll never get 100% of people to comply but at least it would combat it a bit.

I am with you guys, and with musicians these days, in that it annoys the hell out of me seeing everyone's phone in the air. And agreed on the EV solo shows, the security guards were even more distracting, so that is not a good solution to the problem

Excellent point, people should also be required to sit down so they dont interfere with the viewing pleasure of our shorter fans.

For me, this is just something I learned from going to more shows. The first one with a smartphone, I tried to get a ton of pictures and video. Most turned out crappy and I found I really didn't enjoy the show as much. I felt like i was working as a photographer/videograper. So now maybe I'll take a few pictures before the show starts with my friends and maybe a couple (literally 2-3 just to get band and stage and feel for where I was i.e. how close) when they first take the stage or if something special happens (like Chris Cornell at PJ20). The rest of the time, I put it away and just enjoy. There's always the bootlegs that help me relive it and if it was something I really wanted to see again for some reason, there's probably a better video than what I could record on youtube anyway.

I read that Prince banned them at his recent shows and I think Tool did too.

It's really bad for comedians. I heard one say that they go to clubs to try out new material and the next thing you know, that joke that bombed is all over YouTube.

I don't mind it for a song or two, but some shows are ridiculous. With that said, I did tape Black at DeLuna fest :)

Or do what Jack White did and have Free pictures from the show available on the website for free download. Jack has his own Professional photographer take pics and post them on the third man site for each show. You can download and save as many as you like. And these are great pics from a photographer who has 100% access. It did not stop everyone, but I could tell less phones out than usual.
There's no need to say goodbye

I'm pretty sure they won't even need to turn the lights on at Wrigley. The glow from 20,000 phones should be bright enough! :fp: :lol::lol:

I don't mind people taking (or trying to) a pic here and there, but for godsakes...you just spent $200+ to get tickets...and you want to watch the show from the 3.5 inch screen on your phone?!?!:lol:

I'm thinking of making a game out it at the next show I attend. Bring a suction cup gun with a ton of darts and see how many phones you can hit.

How many phones will get trashed if it rains?

    :lol::lol:

Instead of the glare of 20,000 phones lighting the venue...now we'll have 10,000 phones completely worthless by the end of the night, and another 10,000 still up in the air but in a ziplock baggie. :D
Can't wait to watch crappy Youtube videos from phones in plastic baggies! As if it couldn't get worse!:lol:

I don't really use my phone during shows (maybe a few pics, and maybe 1 minute of video), but they don't bother me. I couldn't care less if some people are holding them up as long as it's not right in front of my face. I don't give a shit how other people are or are not taking in the show, and I don't find some tiny little screens scattered in the crowd distracting at all - if one can be so easily distracted by that when there is a big concert going on, then either they need to work on their attention skills, or the concert sucks. I say film away. I always appreciate that there are youtube vids of the show I went to posted, and I don't have to do anything. Good deal. :)
