They're going to ban Smartphone use at shows

My daughter has poor vision and at times I will hold the phone below/ to the side of the person in front of us for a few minutes so she can get a decent view.

Let's ban polite and limited (and potentially important, for disabled attendees) phone use on the actions of immature adolescents that venues have no ability to deal with.

Makes perfect sense.

I don't agree with banning phones (it's not practical between e-tickets, ride share apps, etc.) - but just don't be this guy and film the entire show........

I'm a Lumix filmer, as many of you can probably guess, but my rule is I never lift it higher than my head.  I also screw it to the top of my poster tube and hold it in front of me.  If you hold it in front of your head, you are not blocking anyone that isn't already blocked due to your melon.

I've been to a show where they banned phones by using those locking bag things that you put your phone in while you enter, so e-tickets weren't an issue, and where you can go to a number of stations out where the concessions are to unlock them if you need to use your phone. It worked just fine and was completely practical. This was in a 17,000 seat arena with a full open floor. It went smoothly.

I wouldn't have an issue with that - it's the obstructing other peoples' view for extended periods of time.  I'm all for capturing the show for personal and shareable enjoyment - I've done it, too.  I wouldn't want to be without my phone - but when you get stuck behind someone like this, I see why people start to feel passionately about banning phones and cameras.

I like having some kind of record of shows I went to.  But it’s a pain and distraction (also for myself) to take video clips during the show.  Bands which release official bootlegs completely killed the desire to record audio of the show - why make crappy audience recodings if you can get a soundboard recording for little money?  So it seems to me a lot of the mobile phone use would be eliminated if they would release video recordings too - there are already cameras filming for the large screens, so why not record it and sell it for little after the show?  No one would bother filming with their cameras if they could get a high quality keepsakes from the band.  Then people could go back to enjoying the show with their two eyes and two ears...

It'll be interesting if that's the next wave.  I would love it.  Bruce, Phish, Metallica and more release every show now.  Some of them are within a day or two.  Obviously there's not much mixing happening, but still, I think it's great that they've got on the bandwagon.  If the pro shot really was released, that would be a huge win for the fans.  
And audio boots are definitely dying out.  The only time I've worked with one in the last several years was for Temple Philly 1 and that's just because of the historic nature of the show.  Nothing would make me happier than an official audio release from any of those shows.

I don't know why so many people care that other people are staring at their phone instead of watching the show.  I would honestly much prefer banning alcohol.  I have seen plenty of drunk bully people, but never saw someone get pushed around by a cellphone.

It seems Rock & Roll, the music of youth and rebellion has fully become nothing more than dad music with old men yelling at kids to put their phone away.

I don't care about people using their phones at a show, texting, reading stuff, checking scores, etc. I do care about them holding it up right in my line of sight non stop for an hour and a half or more.  And I have seen plenty of people act like assholes when others ask them to put their phones down. 

Maybe I'm just old fashioned that I would rather watch the band through my eyes rather than through someones  phone screen.

Yep that's what I think and what I said.  However, I also believe one should be able to donkey punch the person in front of you when they do so.  And yes, I believe in gratuitous violence at all times.  I also hate puppies.  Let me know if you have any other stupid questions I can answer for you.

There is a lot of truth to this. People who are obnoxious with their cell phones are going to be obnoxious in other ways. Banning the phones isn't going to change that.

Be courteous to the people around you and let other people enjoy the show in their own way. If someone is blocking your view with a phone, that's one thing. But if it bothers you that someone three rows over is on their phone, then that is something else.

Use your damn phone if you must, BUT KEEP IT OUT OF OUR LINE OF SIGHT!! You aren't so f'ing important making a shitty video from the seats that you can put on You Tube and "impress your friends"......So I think most of us agree ....keep phones down.
