Here is a comment from Metallica's show in Raleigh this week: The METALLICA show was staged in the round, with one square stage in the center of the arena floor, and a chair-free floor filled with fans.
How awesome would that be? Totally different experience. They "sorta" play in the round now when they turn 180 degrees in an arena and play Last Kiss or other song "to the back". Everybody is close with in the round seating.

My dad saw Hendrix in the round with a rotating stage in like 1968.
Arcade Fire used that set-up on their last tour. Saw them play to 4000 people at Mandalay Bay events center. Went to get a beer and walked back to stand front row. Great value for my money!
I'm kind of meh on the "in the round". I've seen metallica do it twice, but if you're on the floor, you spent a considerable amount of time with the band playing in any direction but the one your facing. Maybe it looks cooler from the stands.
In the round wont work with Pearl Jam. The guys have their fixed spots on stage. They have their monitor speakers and amps pointed at them exactly where they stand to provide them with the sound quality they need. Eddie is virtually surrounded by his speakers. Stone, Jeff and Mike have a shitload of effect-pedals where they need to be. Metallica plays with in-ear monitors and digital guitar gear (Fractal Audio Axe-FX) handled by their techs off-stage. Well, Kirk has several wah-pedals around the stage.
They played Newcastle in the UK like this in 1996. Assume it was on the same tour

Really hoping they don't play Lollapalooza, it's become such a turd in recent years. More EDM and rap than anything else, or maybe I'm just old. Or both. But that also means they wouldn't play another IL date so I'd have to do some traveling to get to see them, which all depends on funds and how far the travel is. I won't waste my time going to Woodstock more than likely, unless the lineup is just spectacular...not holding my breath.
I could see them passing on Lollapalooza due to playing 4 Chicago shows between 2016/2018.
I just want to know sooner than later what the summer looks like so I can plan my PTO accordingly.

2007 Lolla show was pretty much a greatest hits set list that came in around two hours. It was still a blast and a beautiful night to watch a concert.

Overall, I'm not big on festivals anymore in general. I went to Lollapalooza the year Sabbath played, they were 1 of 5 bands I wanted to see out of the whole weekend. I'm over big crowds, standing around and waiting all day for a band, and long lines for everything.
So I get up this morning and already, PJ has reached out to U2's stage director for a trapezoidal design and Stone is heading into camp with GSP. I call that progress.

I agree. I would love to see them back at United Center or Alpine, but that can only happen if they do a full tour, otherwise demand would be way too high. My point was just that they did/do try to make the ballpark shows events. Last year I was at Barcelona, London II, both Seattle and both Wrigley, and the ballpark shows were so above and beyond.

You do realize that the Raleigh article was announcing the Metallica had broken the attendance record with 20,052. For reference, Miley Cyrus sold out the PNC arena with a standard stage set up - attendance was 13,734. Just sayin'

I did not look this up so I may be wrong but wouldn't Metallica sell out the whole arena including the normal back of stage seats and Miley would not? I think it is obvious that the round set up sells more ticket but 6500 more seems very high.
