    Times were different then, attitudes were different. We had been told that "boys will be boys." I was just reading a story last night, in the Washington Post, I think, about how the term "date rape" didn't exist before 1985. We knew that if we were not the perfect victim (i.e., virgin abducted from her bed), odds were slim to none that there would be any consequences for the guy. And if it was someone we knew, and we had agreed to go on a date with them, or to hang out with them, then we were kind of asking for it, weren't we? The concept of "agency" certainly was foreign to me. Rejecting or rebuffing a guy was dangerous.

    I spent several years in my forties interviewing young women who were applying to my alma mater. I have to tell you, I was blown away by their confidence, their assertiveness, their self-awareness -- across the board, every one of them, regardless of background. I think Title IX made a real difference in young women's lives. Men's attitudes have changed much more slowly, but I see a huge difference in women's attitudes now vs. 35 years ago.
