what amuses me, and I use that term loosely is that golf is an olympic sport... GOLF!! ffs... I thought tennis being included was bad enough...

I cant remember the last time I watched an olympic event... though id go out on a limb and suggest it was perhaps the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympics.

Tennis is a sport. You don't see fat old men playing tennis into their 50's like in golf. You need amazing footwork, hand eye coordination, conditioning, mental toughness, talent, etc... to succeed in professional tennis. If you don't think tennis is a sport then neither are some gymnastics or swimming events. A lot of the winter events like luge or bobsled wouldn't qualify either then. Freestyle swimming for 100 meters is a sport but a 3 hour marathon tennis match isn't?

    With you on tennis.

But yeah, golf as part of the Olympics? On a par (no pun intended) with curling =)

Doesn't matter Jim - Canadians are still jacked up about the Canada-Russia hockey Summit Series, and that was in 1972.;)

    Well..nice france..is a tourist area
There is no safe place anywhere
People going on vacation usually won't stop going because of possible random acts of violence...otherwise we may never leave home. But places like Brazil does lose tourist because of disease and perceived lack of cleanliness.

As an example I know a couple who love travelling in the US, but would never consider Mexico because of the drinking water.

Never a truer statement ... however I think the 2014 oylympics demonstrated how we can be totally dominate when well coached, well prepared and when 25 payers buy into a system. The team defence the 2014 Olympic hockey team demonstrated was outstanding. And it's unfortunate that the NHL likely will not participate in the next Olympics.

I'm not debating whether or not tennis is a sport. nor am I debating whether or not golf is a sport. I'm questioning their inclusion in the Olympics.

  • For me...

Olympic sports need to be accessible to all people. I love golf, but I'm only being honest when I say golf is for the privileged. Tennis is even more 'elitist'.

There are other sports as well, but running, jumping, and throwing are the purest sports.

Well a lot of Olympic athletes are very privileged people. You get those stories about the ones who fought their way to success through hard times and stuff, but those are the special cases. A good number of Olympians are spoiled rich kids with huge egos, which is why they are able to just train as amateur athletes all day long for years on end instead of spending time working. Of course there is still a "normal" contingency, and then there are all the ones from the countries that invest tons of money in them - they basically work for the government. The Olympics are a strange thing really. But for me, it's just about good competition. I do care about the politics of the Olympics and those involved in staging them, but when it comes to the actual events I just care that it's the best competing with the best. Sports in and of themselves aren't political. It's not golf's fault that it attracts the rich crowd. That's just a culture that people (wealthy men who wanted exclusive private golf clubs) decided to grow around it. They were the only ones who could afford to build the golf courses i figure. It has nothing to do with actually playing golf. I agree it should be more accessible, but to be fair, there are still tons of cheap public golf courses that are accessible to people with little money. It's not wholly a rich person's sport. I know a lot of middle class people who play golf at least once in a while. They just don't do it at private courses.

Because at this point it's nearly impossible to believe or prove that any Russian athlete is clean. Also a clear message needs to be sent that it is not acceptable for the Russian government and the FSB to conspire in an organised operation to supply athletes with clean samples

I gave up on the Olympics when they tried to eliminate one of the original Greek competitions, wrestling.

I thought that was such a stupid move by the Olympic committee. It's all about TV rating and wrestling didn't draw television viewers. But there is by no better way to prove yourself over another human than by grappling.

If we had sent The Rock and John Cena instead of a bunch of college dudes, it would still be an event.
