It is widely known that the organization misappropriated millions in funds earmarked for 9/11 relief. And then four years later, the Red Cross pulled the rug out from under New Orleans after Katrina.
It may be squeaky clean now. But you rip off charitable folks and fuck over those in need in my two favorite cities in the world, then you have credibility issues with me for life.
Thankfully, there are other ways to help and more localized charities on the ground that put your money to work better and faster.
You've got to be much more careful about sending funds to local charities in the middle east. Of course there must be few ones that are there and can be trusted - real research would be needed first - but generally, the Red Cross is probably a way better option in this kind of situation, assuming you can't give funds directly to refugees themselves.Post edited by PJ_Soul onWith all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Well thanks for the info (went and read more). I am surprised and disturbed that this hasn't been much bigger news while people keep donating. I am not oblivious to the tiny percentages that many charities actually get to the purpose of the charity (i have often advocated for people to donate money directly to research hospitals instead of to large Cancer societies, for example, and also advocate for and donate to IFAW because they are so good at actually getting shit done for a large international charity organization). But i actually hadn't heard about the Red Cross being terrible like that. In fact, I have specifically heard the media during crises saying otherwise. That the Red Cross is the best place to donate for specific disasters because it's the best bet for getting the help where needed as opposed to losing it to local charities without organization (or even more sinister).... lies?? Why?Post edited by PJ_Soul onWith all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0

The populist leader has spewed viciously xenophobic and anti-Muslim rhetoric as migrants -- many of whom escaped violence in Syria -- amass in Hungary, a way station on the route to Germany. This, even as the world reels from the photo of Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi's drowned body, cradled in the arms of a Turkish police officer. The gut-wrenching image only served to illustrate the desperate odds refugees face while trying to escape war at home.
Still, Orban is not alone.
In Greece, masked gunmen attack boats of migrants, attempting to prevent them from reaching the shores of the European Union. Even in Germany, where the government has taken in a record 800,000 refugees, a surge in neo-Nazi attacks on migrants have rocked the country.
Images of people leaving a Hungarian railway station on Friday to travel to Austria on foot demonstrate rich nations' reluctance to provide safe havens to those lucky enough to set foot in a stable country.
But, lest we forget, one of the men who most dramatically impacted human civilization in the last decade was the son of a Syrian who migrated to the U.S. in 1954.
Perhaps you've heard of him. The political climate in The UK would not support a large influx Muslim refugees. The already are bent out of shape about the population shift. When we visited a couple months ago,My wife and I both felt there was powder keg brewing just below the surface in England with respect to the growing number of New Middle Eastern folks currently making their home there and the anger and hostility A lot of the blue collar Englishmen have toward them. Its real and palpable and impossible as an outsider to not see.bootlegger10 said:There are a lot of dynamics going on. We in the USA and Canada think we can understand the plight of the refugees and the border countries in Europe.
The USA and Canada are frickin' huge countries though. A million refugees could come into the USA and 95% of the population wouldn't know.
I think for countries like Italy and Greece that are financially broke and don't have strong governments, it may be difficult for individuals living in those countries to be accepting of refugees because there may not be the resources to take care of them, and let's all admit that there is a lot of terrorism in these countries they are coming from and it is reasonable to have some level of trepidation that all of these refugees aren't coming to assimilate to their culture.
Anyway, I'm not saying we shouldn't help these refugees, but let's not automatically judge people because they have legitimate concerns that their way of life can be impacted significantly. We see when assimilation doesn't happen that the negative effects are huge (i.e., riots in France, riots in Sweden, terrorism in London, etc...).
The USA wasn't ready for Hurricane Katrina so don't bitch at Budapest becuase they don't have a plan.0 -

That's not what I meant about you thinking we're all liars. I was talking about how you said you didn't expect anyone here to answer your question honestly.
The part about having people in your home is a totally different topic.
But you didn't answer my question. Would you not try to help refugees by letting them stay in your home because they are middle eastern? Or would you refuse shelter to Americans in need who you don't know during a crisis too.
Godfather.
And anyone on here who says they would ,prove it! Just go on down to your local homeless shelter.Im sure there is a family down there you can also help immediately by letting them into your life and home.

Here's how you can help during the refugee crisis in Europe

Sorry but this is a bit of stretch. maybe you felt this way because you were preconditioned to feel that way before you went there. I'd like to hear from our Fellow British fans who live in England. To be honest, I've had friends go to England this year, quite a few, and non have said what you said. My one cousin works for an airline company and he's there quite frequently and he's never felt what you felt.rr165892 said:
The USA wasn't ready for Hurricane Katrina so don't bitch at Budapest becuase they don't have a plan.
As for anyone who doesn't think our meddling ways didn't cause this, you need to stop lying to yourself. Thats what happens when you funnel weapons to one side in a civil war.
Open your eyes and better yet, open your fucken hearts. These people are your fellow humans. Some of you who frequent AMT embarrass me to think this is how you guys feel towards your fellow man. People say they are helping and you guys come here and attack their efforts or beliefs for it. What a shame. We have such an awesome future ahead for all us humans.
Stay away for a while and just read posts. You learn a lot about someone/some people from sitting back and just reading. A lot.0 -
