Irritating Office Behavior

there's a woman at my work that calls in sick if she has a headache, or even goes home if she's already here (many time right after having a smoke and/or her sixth cup of coffee-don't see the connection yet?). not a migraine. a headache. we always joke when she calls in sick that "I wonder which nail she broke this morning".whispering hands said:People that "Can't work today, cause I'm in too much pain." I'm sorry... I have empathy for anyone in pain, especially chronic conditions like Fibromyalgia, Sciatica, and the likes. But, I live in constant, unending, never goes away, severe pain. Every day! I hurt from head to toe between the nueropathy and the metal in my body. It's just something I have to live with, and I do! So if my broken ass can get out of bed every day., and make it To work, so can you!!! ( oh and I should mention, I can't take any pain meds, because I run forklifts often at work, the OTC stuff doesn't TOUCH the pain, so I have to go in on NOTHING!) that bugs the SHIT outta me!
but to be fair, there are degrees of pain, and degrees of what people are able to deal with. some just aren't mentally as tough as others. but of course some take advantage.

I've had severe chronic migraines for more than 30 years, seen lots of specialists, tried lots of meds. Treatments have improved so much in recent years that I seldom have to take time off for one anymore. Usually only if I wake up with one; then the headache is too far gone to stop it.HughFreakingDillon said:

What's weird is that I have a co-worker who also has them and she and I seem to have many of the same triggers. Our supervisor noticed that one day I called in sick with a migraine within about 5 minutes of my co-worker. Now, if I feel one coming on, I'll ask her if she has one (usually she does) or she'll ask me if I had one over the weekend (usually I did) because she had one. It's kind of freaky.
I feel fortunate though that I have an understanding boss and co-workers who know that I don't just make it up to miss work. That hasn't always been the case at other jobs.

Fortunately, I get a migraine once every three or four months now (used to be a more than weekly occurrence). But pain is pain - sometimes when my back is screaming, I simply cannot power through it as much as I wish I could.Who Princess said:

The bolded part up there, thank goodness for that. My direct boss suffers with back problems and migraines to boot. He gets it.

The worst for me was a supervisor who believed that I couldn't possibly have migraines so frequently (2-3 a week, although I didn't always take time off for them). She told me I had to bring a doctor's note every time I missed work due to one. My neurologist wrote her an angry letter saying that when I had a migraine, the last thing I needed to be doing was driving in for an appointment just so that I could bring her a note.hedonist said:

"Happy Friday" has become entirely too common in my office lately. I hate it. I act nice about it, but really they are all, "HAPPY FRIDAY! HEE HEE!", and I'm thinking, "Oh, shut up."HesCalledDyer said:Office/business cliches irritate the piss out of me! it's because some people have a hard time with "invisible" illnesses. if you don't have a cast or are throwing up or coughing up a lung, some don't believe it.Who Princess said:

AND the doctor's note some employers require just for being out sick in general. Got the flu, need to just rest, but have to go through the whole shower-get dressed routine, get your sick self there, sit in the waiting room exposing others to your cold or flu, doctor confirms what's already known, get the fucking note, go back home probably more exhausted and sick.HughFreakingDillon said:

Just makes things worse and takes precious time away from others who need to be treated. Fortunately many physicians are taking the same "no way" path.
And PJ_Soul, I've been getting "Happy Friday Eve" here on Thursdays. Assholes

This makes me happy to have my job. We have unlimited sick days and don't need a note unless we will hit the 10th day in a row. The only reason they want the note is because on the 10th day you have to go to short term disability which the company pays for. It just allows them to not have to pay you as the insurance picks it up. Their theory is that if you are picky in who you hire and vet people well you won't want to lose people over a bad run of health. Good employees are hard to find so you keep them when you do find them over all else. We can also work from home when needed so what you normally see is not people taking sick time but working remote so not to share germs (which is also a company policy). As always I lucked out finding these guys and will retire with them.hedonist said:HughFreakingDillon said:

Yeah, I'm happy to be in the same boat. I can't see myself ever leaving my employer (they are actually ranked as one of the top 100 employers in Canada!). We are required to provide medical documentation if we're sick for more than 3 days in a row, which I think is a touch too few days, since just the flu will keep you out for a week, and just because of the burden this requirement puts on the healthcare system. I know that some people, myself included, will just come to the office for half a day after the 3rd day no matter how sick they still are, just to avoid having to go to the doctor for no good reason and paying for documentation, But anyway, the entire sick leave policy, short term and long term, is very good for everyone IMO, and there are simple policies that prevent anyone from taking advantage of the paid sick leave: 1) requiring the documentation after 3 straight days, and 2) supervisors are allowed to ask for it anytime they want if they for any reason feel like someone is abusing their paid sick leave allowances.hedonist said:

New one today. Idiot coworker asks me some oddball question about a system I manage. I can't answer weird random question but tell them it is a valid question and that I can get us a meeting with the support team who I work with in a couple of days to discuss. This discussion happened verbally. Idiot coworker in turn emails same question she asked me to a co-worker who is one step above me on the totem pole but not my boss. This person is also a good friend. Idiot co-worker in the email references she spoke with me but did not put my instructions. I now have friend co-worker thinking I am the idiot for not just taking care of it as he told her the same damn thing I said. If you are going to shop for the answer you want don't mention we talked. Its rude and now slowed down that meeting for a week as punishment. The support team is now to busy to meet until next week when I told them what she did.Tom Brady & Donald Trump, BFF's
