Glad to see she's smiling in this picture. All the others you've posted she either looks way serious or she's asleep.

she's far from "way serious." in this blurry picture, she has just chewed thru her leash and is very proud of herself. you can see what's left of the leash dangling below her chin. :fp:

I figured her pics looked serious because those were the only times you caught her staying still. :))

Happy Birthday Bubba. 10 years old today. She's been by my side through thick and thin for the hardest 10 years of my life and still makes me smile every day.

Happy b'day, Bubba. Shame on you for chewing through your leash, Piper. Don't go doing anything stupid like chopping your thumb in half with an ax.

I missed dog day yesterday but have some pix of Brian. Wow, dog farts are something.

A lot of thunderstorms in Chicago lately which means a lot of time hiding in the closet for Jammer. This is where he immediately goes when he hears thunder or sees lightning. Poor guy.

    :)) and so it begins.....
  • Hi guys! Just checking in on my favorite thread on the forum! Got a new job with restricted internet access so I'm here much less now. Glad to see all the doggies are holding up well and keeping their humans on their toes!
Bugsy has had a few rough days, which included a 3 night stay at the emergency vet hospital. It started about a week and a half ago, he had a mild dry cough and his legs were a bit wobbly. He spent an afternoon at our normal vet where they ran some blood work, did a lymphoma test and put him on IV fluids for the day... sent him home with an antibiotic b/c he was running a bit of a fever. He seemed better that night and the next morning. When his dad got home the next night, he was very slow coming out of his crate and it took him a long time to eat his dinner (he usually inhales his food, so we knew this was not good). Brought him to the Emergency Vet Hospital the next morning after talking to our normal vet who told us all his blood work came back normal and the lymphoma test was negative... they were at a loss. The E-Vet first thought he had kennel cough that led to pneumonia. Poor guy was in complete isolation. They did a tracheal wash, x-rays, ultrasound and more in depth blood work. We went up to see him that night only to find out that we weren't allowed to go in the room with him in case he had kennel cough, we could only see him through the glass door. Next day he wasnt showing much sign of improvement and all the results from all the tests they did would not be back for a few days. They had a specialist look over the blood work and noticed his white count was off... not enough to cause alarm normally, but they looked into it further and started thinking it was possibly a tick borne disease... They added in another antibiotic and started treating him for that, even though the results wouldnt be back for a few days still. He started improving slightly and was starting to eat again, so they let us take him home on the 4th day.
Test results came back a few days later and confirmed he did not have kennel cough or pneumonia, but had anaplasma which is a tick borne disease that attaches to the white blood cells. He is on a strong dose of antibiotics for 30 days and will be fine. We caught it so early it wasnt really showing on the blood work yet... which is a good thing because it apparently starts moving into the organs and can cause long lasting problems, or even death, after just a few weeks.
What is so messed up about the whole situation is that we use Frontline regularly. He just had his Frontline treatment right around the time we suspect he was bit by this nasty little tick. Looking more and more into all of this, apparently Frontline doesn't repel ticks, it just kills them... after they bite and infect your dog. I have used Frontline on all my pets for years and always thought it was the best option. I guess they changed the formula recently and there are tons of consumer complaints out there now. I will be switching to Advantix now, even if it means I have to separate the dog and cat for 24 hrs (b/c Advantix is highly toxic to cats) and I would advise all of you pet parents to do the same or at least talk to your vet or do some research on the subject. I have a whole box of Frontline that my vet said they would let me trade for the Advantix. I don't care if it is more expensive... If Frontline isn't going to repel the ticks, what good is it? Just cost me $3,000 at the emergency vet and put my poor little guy through hell. I'm just happy we had good vets who were able to identify the problem before it was too late.
    Hug your doggies :o3

Sorry to hear about Bugsy! Sending him--and you--vibes for a speedy recovery. Hang in there, Bugsy!

Several years ago we had a dog who got sick from a tick bite. She had a tough time getting over it and it damaged her heart. I use Advantix Multi and I haven't seen fleas or ticks in years.

PS. I know what you mean about restricted access at work. It really frustrates me that I can't check in here. But I probably get more work done. ;)
