    lets see one song is a bout a kid who didn't get to know his father, however that was something he overcame, but that was his own inner struggle, I use to see Better Man for what it was speaking out against domestic violence, and I always thought it was an advocacy for that, yeah lets end domestic violence, and it was one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs, now it's current form, and the way people sing the lyrics hollow, with no sense of what the song is really about, just sad, go ahead and sing it if you want and celebrate women getting the crap out of them, because is what the song is about, I guess if you never grew up around it, then of course you wouldn't get it


    I think you totally forgot the Alive also refers to the moms sick incestual love for the kid. Yes Eddie described Alive as that being apart of the meaning of the song too. Then again Ed has said a lot of things.
    I don't think he wanted us to take his meaning of a song as our own. PJ wants us to interpret music into our own way. Sometimes it helps us heal, cry, and even get pissed off. One of the main reasons they wont do videos.

    seems like the older fans who are always up front can't win. They get blamed for "just standing" there throughout the show and when they do "rock out", they choose the one Pearl Jam tune you shouldn't dance too :lol:

    I cringe when I hear young men sing the song ...
    especially 'as he looks her over' seems to be a favorite line for some,
    a little over zealous.
    It's my least favorite song but the one I can do the best karaoke, ironic.

    I keep in mind everyone can be a Betterman ... person.

    But in exposing abuse, couldn't you say the song is a celebration of those that have risen above and give hope to those that feel helpless? I mean c'mon. You could interpret the freaking song a million ways. And none of it goes to folks singing along promoting violence. If that's the case, then couldn't you argue that's what Eddie was doing when he wrote the damn thing in the first place?

    He is encouraging the crowd to sing. So I don't think there is room for any moral high ground here!

    nope, not at all, all I am saying is think about the the lyrics, I have said that throughout the thread, don't be one of these idiot chicks on Twitter who think it is a love song, if you know the meaning of the song and still want to sing it, cool, the main point of this thread was to bring to light the actual meaning of the song which has been lost, and to get people to think, not saying don't sing, go ahead and sing, just remember there are women in this world who are still getting the crap beat out of them and that was Eddie's original intention was to bring that to light when he wrote that song we should never lose sight of that fact, so sing, but never forget

    Relax with the font. You don't need to be the lyrics meaning police. I mean, have you ever heard of folks using Every Breath You Take as their WEDDING song? I mean if that's not the dumbest thing, what is? A song about a stalker being used as a WEDDING song. Yet, 10's of thousands of idiots did that in the 90s.
