This is for the bastard that married my mama...

  • you must really love daughter
I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!

...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!

    I like the song Betterman.
    I like cream puffs.
    Domestic Abuse is wrong.

Now can we please move on.
LMMFAO!!! OMG! SPEEDY, this just made you the
Betterman Betterman!! Holy fuck that was funny!!
Ok so BBH I love ya man, but you cannot take personally
the views of others. You are intelligent, and obviously
seem concerned.. Considering that it's lyrical content
You are concerned with, in a song by PEARL JAM ( think
on that a second my friend)...... Regardless of ED's
founding of the song's origins... It's a PJ song. That is the
whole answer to all of this right there.. Remember back in
the days of Videos and interviews and so many people
would try to get Ed to tell what the songs were about??
What was his favorite answer?? He'd respond by telling them,
he didn't like to tell people, because to each person the song
means something different, something personal to that
individual. And that if he told what HE wrote it about, that he
felt that was stealing that personal connection with the
song from us. One of the greatest things about this band, is
they may hold the copyright to the lyrics... But what they
mean WE hold the rights to. Music is a strange fluke of
communication.. It's amazing to see so many people
share a feeling evoked by ONE song! Who gives ( stealing SPEEDY's
Line here since I hijacked thus thread via his quote), a
RATS ASS what the song means to your neighbor, your goat,
Your toddler, or your dead grand mother?!?!? The ONLY
important view to each is their own! So why rant and get oddly
upset when people refuse to go with the origins of the song
as their source of meaning?? That is why Ed leads us all in the
"Cream Puff Campfire" version of this sing.. I think he truly
is awed by the fact that so many people have a uniquely
possitive way of hearing what started out as a sad song.. Gotta
respect Ed's intelligence on this one..

I know I have this bootleg somewhere..but one of my favorite
Versions of Wishlist is he gets it right all the way through, the song
ends and as the audience is applauding.. He stops them,
To make this comment.. " is Stone the only one who caught that??
Did you even notice?? I didn't fuck up that so g ONE TIME... Not
ONCE!!" How cute is that!!? He makes me laugh quite often!

Not quite.. They are a puffed pastry filled with Whipped Cream or Pastry Cream, sometimes sprinkled with confectioner's sugar.. delectable..

What if we change the meaning of the chorus to make it about dinner and we all sing, "Can't find the butter , man."

    Would that help?

If we could somehow get an entire arena to sing that, I would be pretty pleased.

I have a feeling that a lot of drunks are already singing that.

About 90% of Pearl Jam songs aren't positive songs or issues. OP, go have a look at what the songs on Ten and Vs are about....

Whilst Ed wrote Betterman about domestic abuse, the listener is entitled to interpret the meaning of the song themselves and it may mean something else to them than what it does to you. And that is ok. If a couple choose it as their wedding song that's ok. It clearly means something to them. Not everyone reads into the lyrics, some people just enjoy a song for what it is. And Betterman is a very good pop song.

Many of Pearl Jam's songs are about social issues and broken relationships, so I guess we cannot sing along to most of the songs. From everything I have read, the band enjoys how much the crowd sings along to their songs, it shows them how connected we are to their music. Isn't that the point of live shows????

thanks, I have an opinion, I realized it could be unpopular, I think some awareness was raised, and I think the next time the song is played and we are all singing it, it may be even more special, and at least a few people stopped to think, and that is never a bad thing

Hey, and people still listen to Born in the USA and think it is a patriotic song...

    And this:
