You should wikipedia the meaning behind the song. You may be surprised.
Although the song is allegedly about being stopped by cops, the fact that he clearly says "if you're having GIRL problems...i got 99 problems but the BITCH ain't one" clearly suggests he's talking about a woman not a female dog. No matter what the verses are about, the hook is what everyone sings/remembers and most people assume based on that alone that the song is about women. Was this an accident? I think not. And anyway I don't think that the song is any better if it's just another song where Jay-Z glorifies drug dealing. The line where he basically accuses the cops of racial profiling kills me-he's a DRUG DEALER that's why he's getting pulled over.
Before someone gets on my case about not listening to hip hop and thus not "getting it", I do listen to hip hop and I own this particular record. I just have this dilemma with Jay-Z...in my opinion once a drug dealer always a drug dealer. And don't give me the old "he had to do what he had to do to survive" line. I'm sure he HAD to shoot his older brother when he was 17.
classy.

One of my 99 problems is that Eddie is not singing on this!"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0

This was a great collaboration for the so many reasons. This is what PJ has been doing for years...they are just having more fun with it these days. You get mad when Dennis Rodman comes out on stage because you hate basketball? You're not a Ben Harper fan, so keep him away when PJ is in town? Don't even get me started on PJ20 and it's guest stage appearances...
This was the MADE IN AMERICA festival and if I'm not mistaken, PJ was the one who signed on to a Jay-Z (You know...the guy who says "Bitches and Hoes" a lot) festival ticket. Didn't hear a whole lot of bitching back then...we were just happy to see another show on U.S. soil. Just because they shared the stage for 3 minutes in a little cross culture fun doesn't mean the Stone is all of the sudden a woman hater and a drug dealer. Music genre is music genre, but why keep everything so separate? I heard the crowd singing along. It's music...have some fun with it!!
Why not blame The United Way for their role in sponsorship....makes just as much sense.1998: Alpine 2000: Auburn Hills, Alpine (Ice Bowl) 2003: Cleveland, Alpine

Maybe think this through next time... Here is what you said
"Although the song is allegedly about being stopped by cops, the fact that he clearly says "if you're having GIRL problems...i got 99 problems but the BITCH ain't one" clearly suggests he's talking about a woman not a female dog. "
You wrote if your having girl problems... The lyrics you left out say "I feel bad for you son" which goes to show that the lyrics are coming from the cops point of view.
The lyrics are from the cops perspective, telling the person stopped by the police, that - if your having girl trouble I feel bad for you son, you've got 99 problems (as in w the police) but a bitch ain't one.
He also says "A" bitch not "the" bitch. Changes the meaning a lot.
I'll say what's classy, is you writing .., to omit the lyrics that prove its not about a girl but a cop telling The guy that girl problems aren't one of his 99 problems.
Now the fact that pj played one part of one song with jay z bothers me zero. I'm really glad WMA was played. The rest of the show looked great!0 -
I'm not a big hip-hop fan, I'm dislike Jay Z's music for the most part, and I fucking LOVED this. I thought it was amazing. It was a cool ass collaboration. The band and jay z sounded tight.I'll ride the wave where it takes me......0

I don't know whether Jay-Z is entirely respectful of women but at least one level of meaning of that song is about exactly what WMA is about, so what better way to end the festival?
The collaboration rocked!0 -
I'm sure you all cry when you hear Ed sing "Who set the standard, born to be rich? Such fine examples, skinny little bitch" Or when he told a girl she had mosquito bite tits in Hershey?
Seriously some of you need to just shut up and enjoy the music. This sounds fucking great and was all of 3 minutes long in a 2 hour show.we were but stones, your light made us stars0 -

Whatever. I wish I could have been there more than anything, it's weird how narrow minded people are being about it. Anyway, Rolling Stone has a couple great pics on the website right now:

LOL. You have to be kidding me.
First of all, if you are so offended by Jay Z, why would you even attend HIS festival?
Secondly - and more importantly - this song is just art. There is no need to take it for anything more than that. You can get on your pedestal and judge a TEENAGED Shawn Carter all you want, (while ignoring, for example, his concerts at MSG, where 100% of the proceeds went to families of firefighters who died on 9/11), but what the hell does that have to do with PJ simply performing a fun, cool song with him? I suppose you'd also be offended if Eddie watched The Godfather and it's glamorization of violence and organized crime.
Give me a break.
For the record, this performance kicked ASS. Dope as hell.Camden - 5/28/06; Camden - 6/20/08; MSG - 6/25/08; Newark - (Ed Solo) 8/7/08; Philly - (Ed Solo) 6/12/09; Philly - 10/30/09; Philly - 10/31/09; Newark - 5/18/10; MSG - 5/20/10; MSG - 5/21/100 -

When you're done over-analyzing the '99-problems' lyrics, you might want to check out the lyrics to "Real Thing".With the Pearl Jam and I'm packin' the steel

Wow, some people are so serious today!
I think it's cool they did this, and it's a lot of fun.Interesting way to collaborate with the other headliner.

That was hilarious... I still hate Jay-Z's material...
It's a big meh for me... whatever.0 -
